A sudden chill creeped through Kyungsoo’s bones, slightly jolting his body. He was currently sitting on his spinning chair, overlooking himself on the mirror.
Last night he had left the window open, despite the cold air, to be able to breath normal. Kyungsoo was such an overachiever, in every single way. He had studied for this morning exam for the entire week, at least spending two hours working on the homework and studying.
College wasn’t like high school. For him, high school was a breeze. AP classes were one of his favorite classes since the teachers challenge them and prepared them for what was coming next in their education.
Needless to say, he had never worked so hard until the breaking point. It was obvious that college was his challenge, his energy. He craved the achievement of grades, of praises.
Because of the pushing of himself to be the very best he always missed going out with his friends. If his friends would go out to party, almost always he decided against it, knowing that if he went he might get drunk and get loose, loosing time that he could be spent studying.
He was such a bore. Uninteresting. Even looking at himself, his tousled hair, sleepy eyes, he couldn’t bring himself to smile. Yesterday he had agreed to go with one of his best friends, Chanyeol, to a club that was clearly not for underage people.
At first he declined. Clubs were not for him. The music, the ambience was okay for him. It was the alcohol that drove him away from having a good time. Alcohol brought memories that he didn’t want to remember at all.
Back in tenth grade, he had gotten so emotional at the death of his mother that he couldn’t function for a couple of months, hiding himself on his bed, and when his father left to work, he would sneak in alcohol from the nearby drug store and drink until he passed out from the booze.
It took four months for his father to realize he was becoming an alcoholic, someone who needed alcohol to live Day by Day. Kyungsoo would obviously go to school, alcohol tucked and hidden in his backpack, wrapped with one of his light, red sweaters.
During those months, his grades had went down the drained, pulling him out of his high GPA and threatening to kick him out of his grade and possibly making him repeat tenth grade.
Thankfully, his father step in and gave him an ultimatum: either you get your shit together and save your graduation, top ten position, or I’ll send you to rehab and miss the rest of the school year.
Kyungsoo had never had an ultimatum before. He was the good kid. Never got in trouble. The thought of loosing his gpa and his education brought him back from his slumber, from his depressing state.
Soon he realized that his mother wasn’t coming back. His mother wouldn’t have liked for him to waste himself away and lose what he has dearly loved since he was small.
The journey has been hard for him; his eyes staring back at him tell him of those struggles, sleepless nights, hurting pains that at times attack him at night or when he would at least expect them.
As he keeps staring at himself, his reflection, his mind tells him that those days are gone. Times have change. He has learned to manage his emotions when it comes to his mother. He has healed, although, not completely. His mother’s death will always hurt, there’s no denying it.
What he can do is remember that his mother is not here; his life continues and he can keep making the promise that he told himself the day he decided to stop drinking himself to sleep: that he would make his mother proud everyday from where ever she was on this earth whether in heaven or in the elements of Mother Earth.
Time was catching up with the said hour that Chanyeol said he was going to the club. He had been so adamant on not going. He had his day planned out. He was going to eat Chinese food with one of his roommates and then he would get home to catch up with one of his favorite shows on the CW and then start studying for his upcoming test.
Having everything planned out made him at ease. Yet. Today he wasn’t. Regret would show up every time he did every bullet point from his imaginary journal that he kept on his head. When he met his roommate at the restaurant, his body tremble from the anxiety that was building up. The more he counted the hours, the more he thought of calling Chanyeol.
Three hours before he would leave to the club, Kyungsoo called Chanyeol telling him he had changed his plans. So now he was sitting on his spinning chair, deciding whether to style his hair differently or to just leave it like he always does. He wants to look differently than what he normally looks like. He’s going to a club after all.
After he had hanged up with Chanyeol, he took a quick shower and scanned his closet for something deemed worthy of ‘club clothing’.
For several seconds he stands there, looking back and forth, hating every single shirt he had. None of them looked like he was going to a club. Which in fact proved that he didn’t go to clubs. He did have a black shirt that had the logo of Adidas. He only wore it once and then he tossed it to the far, deep end of the closet.
Having nothing else he really liked, Kyungsoo pulled the shirt from the rod and fished out his favorite dark jeans from the third drawer from the cabinet.
Fifteen minutes later he was all clad, charging his phone while he watched Netflix, waiting for Chanyeol to pick him up.
~~~
The car was tight, two toned guys were besides Kyungsoo, Chanyeol on the steering wheel, and a guy with chestnut hair with an eerie laugh.
Everything was so new to him: the laughter after sundown, their cologne mixing with each other creating a scent too strong for his nostrils, and the Fake ID’s they carried on their pockets.
When Chanyeol ranged the door, Kyungsoo was surprised to see his boyfriend with him and a guy he never met before.
They were all dressed up, their legs stuffed with black skinny jeans. Without noticing his eyes had looked up at the guy besides Chanyeol, his hair parted and a bright smile plastered on his face.
“Hey, can we come in?” Chanyeol gave him his ‘s’up face’, his arm draped over his boyfriend, Baekhyun’s hips. The male beside him was one inch away from them, his hip swaying to the left.
“Sure.” Kyungsoo opened the door wide, stepped away from the door, and let them inside. When he closed the door, Chanyeol sat on his chair, three ID’s displayed on the table.
“What are those?” His eyes searched all of theirs for an answer. He was so oblivious to what happened at the clubs. He had completely forgotten that they were still minors to the eyes of the government when it came to clubs and alcohol.
“Fake ID’s. My friend, here, Kai,” Chanyeol says, motioning with his hands the boy next to Baekhyun. ” He makes fake ID’s. Thanks to me you got them for free.”
“I made three so you can chose from any that you feel is closer to your age and name,” Kai tells him, picking up the cards and handing them to him.
“Oh,” his voice falls as he scans the cards. His heart dropped, the feeling of breaking the law made him nervous. It was one thing to get beer from the guy who didn’t even asked for his ID when he was young, but to get in the club with a fake ID is beyond dangerous in his dictionary.
All of the cards had his face, a picture that Chanyeol took of him one day after getting a haircut. His eyes looked angry, but his mouth was upturned into a grin. His name in each of his cards were different as well the age.
Uneasiness crept into his stomach, settling there and unable to move from its position. His apartment was silent as he carefully chose the cards. The two first said he was between 24 and 23. That wasn’t that bad. He did in fact look like he was that age.
He went against those, feeling like that would be so far in a stretch. The third one said he was 21, which matched him better than the other two.
With a heavy sigh, he looks up at Kai who was staring back at him, curiously; he then slides one from the card and hands the other two to Kai. Kai takes the two cards from him as he slides his card on the inside of his pockets.
“Awesome. Baekhyun is going in another car while we go on mine. There’s already two guys waiting inside,” Chanyeol announces, claps his hands, and stands up from the chair.
“I’ll see you over there, then,” Baekhyun sweetly tells his boyfriend, kisses him on the lips, and then is the first one to leave the apartment.
It doesn’t take long before they are out of the apartment as well. While Chaneyeol jogs ahead, Kai lightly holds his wrist and tells him not to worry, and that people do this all the time. Kyungsoo nodded without saying anything.
On the drive over there, he kept thinking that it was a mistake coming over here. At first, he had been so confident and now he felt like an idiot for believing this was going to work. He wasn’t so confident for things like this.
The backseat was getting hot, the two guys kept pushing him smaller on his seat every time Chanyeol did a turn.
Music was quietly playing, Kai humming to a song only to himself, although Kyungsoo can hear it perfectly. His humming was savory, his voice becoming honey to his ears. For a second he closes his eyes and focuses on the sound, overpowering the regrets on his mind.
Abruptly, the car is parked. Their bodies are jerked back, still for a second, just before the rest start to talk really loudly, climbing out of the car.
Kyungsoo takes his time, pushing the button of the seat belt and then pulling it away from his body. One of the guys had left the door opened so he slides on the next seats before his and then puts one foot on the side step.
Startled, Kai is in front of the opened door, his hand stretched out to him. Kyungsoo, unthinking takes it, his cheeks turning a tad red.
“Thank you.” With one jump he is finally on the concrete door. Kyungsoo didn’t realize that their hands were still together until his hand started to become moist, so he slowly removes his hand from Kai’s. Kai takes notice and warmly chuckles.
“The club is this way.” Kyungsoo smiles at him and then follows him, one step behind.
Kai’s body was really firmed, clearly evident that he loves to work out. His hair has red streaks, Kyungsoo takes notice now that he was occasionally looking at it while he looked down on the floor so that he didn’t fall on the ground and look like an idiot.
Everyone else around them resembled Kai, their bodies ripped and their eyes red from either being stoned or drunk. Girls were positioned on the corners, drinking and laughing, the line on the opposite bearing eagerly young teens pretending to be older as they chatted and scrolled through their phones.
A distant sound of a police siren was blaring, but no one took notice. No one was alarmed like he was. Kyungsoo had let that sound be his conscious, shouting at his naive intentions of letting himself relax.
Mermaids took notice when alarms came which was exactly what he was doing. He was about to turn away when Kai pulled his wrist and told the guy something. The guy nodded and unclasped the cord from the stanchion to let them in.
The inside was equally loud as he expected. The song penetrating from the boxes was pulsing, shadowing his own pulse which he can’t hear anymore.
Kai’s hand was still on his as he navigated through the maze that was the dance floor. For a second he wanted to cover his ears. Too much noise for his innocent ears.
Chanyeol was already dancing on Baekhyun when they spotted them a couple of inches away from the rest of the pack.
Their table was already filled with drinks, some of them bobbing their heads to the music, and a few already making out. Grossed out by their make out session, Kyungsoo sits next to one of the guys he was sitting with previously in the car, averting his eyes to the dance floor.
Kai has finally let go of his hand, only this time he had let go so he can bring drinks that he swears are the best in this club. Somehow Kai had made Kyungsoo feel more relax. He was still regretful and his mind had visions of himself tucked in his bed as he watched his favorite show. Even as this image looked so good on his mind he knew he has to stay and try new grounds. He wasn’t going to stay a young adult forever.
With his legs crossed, Kyungsoo sneaks his phone and checks for any notifications. There was none. Since he didn’t have data his phone was dry from notifications. Kyungsoo had
checked their WiFi, but it had a password so it was hard for him to even check what was going on in the virtual world.
How disappointing. He should be having fun. Clearly the others are. Chanyeol looks like he belongs there. Him. Kyungsoo clearly didn’t belong here. He doesn’t like to make out in front of people. He doesn’t like to dance dirty on men. How pretentious of him. By the way he was thinking, he liked to say that he was better than these people. Whether that was true or not, it did not make him feel any better.
The guy next to him was giving him glances from the tip of his beer bottle.
The guy was sporting a smirk which kind of made him uneasy. He didn’t come here to flirt which he knows he should be doing. He’s not gonna find someone if he doesn’t put his part in conversing with new people.
Taking a huge breath in he slightly moves his body to face the guy. His mouth muscles begin to move and as he’s about to drop a sound, Kai is right besides him (saving him from an awkward conversation) and hands him a small glass of blue liquid.
Finally his muscles distress themselves. He hadn’t realized that this situation was making him really nervous. He was so thankful towards him. There was no thought process as he drinks the liquid which was so good on his throat. There was no sour look on his face neither was there regret as he finished the entire drink.
“Woah, there boy. We don’t want to get drunk too fast,” Kai laughs, taking the drink from Kyungsoo’s lips.
“Sorry. It’s tastes so good.” Kyungsoo licks his lips, his palate already craving for more of the blue liquid. The alcohol was a mixture of vodka and a blueberry liquid that reminds him of the syrup he puts on his shaved ice cream. The liquid could also be something else, but he can’t really pin point the flavor.
“Is this your first drink!” Kai eyes him, his eyebrows knitted as he drinks the lasts drops of his drink.
Kyungsoo shakes his head. “Had been sober for years.”
“Aren’t you nineteen? You were an alcoholic as a teenager?” Kai asks, bewilderment evident on his voice.
What a shock that someone at fifteen was already living by the addiction of alcoholism.
Shame engulfs him from behind, stays dominantly as he forms any coherent words that can explain his situation without getting the pity look that so many give him after they know about the reason why he was addicted to alcohol.
Kyungsoo plays with the little stick that came with the drink, a pink flamingo stick contradicting his solemn mood. Kai is quiet, looking at him, a serious expression on his face.
At this moment he had forgotten about the club. Despite the loud, pandemonium creeping at every corner of this place, his proximate perimeters had a shrilling silence.
Everyone was frozen, stuck on their desires. There was an inexplicable sensation bubbling his stomach, his eyes heavily looking at Kai. Everything was so weird. He verily knows the guy, but there’s a pull, thrusting him to Kai and letting him be trusted.
With a click of his tongue, he moves closer to Kai so he can hear him better. ” My mother died when I was fifteen. After that, I became hooked on alcohol, needing of its chemicals to help me survive the lonely days that came like water, none stop.
There wasn’t a day that I wasn’t drunk. I even took a bottle of alcohol to school, drinking on bathrooms, lunch breaks. To say the least, I was an alcoholic. My father had gave me an ultimatum. Slowly I got sober, and from there I promised myself to stay sober… until today.”
“What made you break your sobriety?” Kai’s face pulled down, sadness filling his face as Kyungsoo told him his infamous story.
What made him break his sobriety? There’s so many reasons why he did. Which one is the correct one to say?
Right in front of them there was a couple smiling and pecking their lips. The couple looked odd from the rest of the people. Just like them he was the odd one. A singularity from the depths of a galore.
People who associate with others tend to find the most happiness, and they get to experience more. Yet. Not everyone can socialize. For Kyungsoo socializing has been sort of a problem. He has improved. Still, working the never to talk to others is nerve wracking.
As well that it was time he allowed himself to be lose, drink moderately, and allow himself to dip in the pool of socializing even if he doesn’t utter a word to no one.
What happened to him a long time ago should not be brought whenever he wants to have a drink. Five years make a huge difference, and he for sure can handle drinking. He has nothing to lose. He knows that drinking himself to sleep will do nothing for him.
For what seems an eternity to Kyungsoo has only been a minute. Kai was still there, looking at earnestly. “I think it was time
that I allow myself to have a good time and have a good relationship with alcohol .”
“You’re truly an inspiration. I’ve never fallen through the depths of alcoholism so I admire your honesty and your will to not let it define you,” Kai tells him with honesty.
Kyungsoo was taken back. For a guy who sells fake ID’s he had a good sense of morality and honesty. His eyes were glossy with glee, forgetting the fact that they were at a club and not a restaurant.
Shouting, and masses of people pushing and hurling into a huge circle evidently brought him to the present. No longer did he feel in a state of static. His eyes became alert. The others looked around, giving each other worry glances. Kyungsoo was worried too. Something inside of him told him that gente was trouble.
“What’s going on?” He mutters, afraid for the worse.
In an instant, after the music was cut off, Baekhyun appeared, shaky and worried.
“It’s Chanyeol. He got into a fight and he…” Baekhyun struggled to utter words out. He swallowed and then spoke again,” and he’s unconscious. We need to get him to the hospital.”
Quickly, they all jumped, going straight to where Chanyeol was. Kyungsoo was still sitting down, too shock to respond. When he stood up, Kyungsoo grabbed his wrist.
“Take me with you.”
~~~
“He’s in surgery right now. The doctor said he’ll call us when he’s done,” Baekhyun tells the others as he weeps, his body pressed against a girl who he had never seen before.
Everyone else nods, turning to each other to talk about what had happened. The events that followed after were so quick that Kyungsoo felt like they passed in an instant.
He was currently sitting opposite from the others. Earlier he had given a big hug to Baekhyun, offering him his friendship in this difficult time he is currently in.
“He’s an idiot. I don’t understand why he gets into fights,” Kai angrily fumes, a frown on his face. Kai just like Baekhyun was excessively worrying, except he was angry rather than sad.
“Some people love the adrenaline,” Kyungsoo adds, realizing after that his comment wasn’t necessary to say out loud.
In response, Kai grunts, shaking his head vigorously. Kai was right. There is no use for Chanyeol to pick a fight since this is the consequence of that action.
As for Kai, there was no use of him to get angry. His anger won’t do anything right now. Chanyeol is in surgery and the only thing that they can do is be there to support him and to be there when he’s out of surgery.
Kyungsoo realizes that the seats are small, and the room is half full, either from Chanyeol’s friends or from the other patients’ families.
On the far right corner there was the gift store where you can buy something for the patient. Kyungsoo turns to Kai and presses his hands to his arm. “What if instead of sulking here we go and buy him something. It can kill time and we can talk more to distract yourself,” he suggests, adding some enthusiasm to his voice.
“Sure. I need a distraction right now.”
What got Kai distracted was the small books with Christian quotes. He, with a bored expression looked through the pages, flipping them at his own pace.
Amused, Kyungsoo stayed behind eying the stuff animals and the keychains with names that they for sure are for white people only. Never would they see their names engraved on necklaces.
“This one is so cute,” Kyungsoo says, giggling to himself.
“That would totally make Chanyeol crack up,”Kai says behind him.
“We should get him this.”
“You think so?”
“Maybe. I don’t know. I think you know him more than I do,” Kyungsoo tells him sadly.
“Well I think we both know him differently. Perhaps you know his tame side while I know his wild side. Doesn’t mean you know him less.” He shrugs, picking up a koala and reads what’s saying on the shirt.
“That’s true.” Kyungsoo picks up the giraffe that has a shirt that says: you giraffe me crazy, but I love it.”
Chanyeol does laugh like an idiot. For anything he would slap his knee and start laughing. Oh, his Chanyeol. He hopes his surgery is fine. If anything happens he doesn’t know what he’ll do.
“Don’t be gloomy. He’ll be fine.” Kai nudges his arm causing him to blush. He’s starting to catch feelings for this beautiful boy who has been nothing but sweet and generous to him. He was far from a stranger now.
“Okay. Then let me ask you a question? How did you come to meet Chanyeol?” As Kai puts the Koala back, Kyungsoo clutches the giraffe on his arms as a way of protection from having his arms with nothing to do. He tends to move his arms a lot when he’s nervous.
“That’s a long story,” he chuckles rubbing the nape of his neck.
“We have time.”
“Okay, then. I’ll invite you coffee at the cafeteria. I think this conversation will last until the last minute of surgery,” Kai says, grinning and stuffing his hands on his pockets.
“That wouldn’t be so bad,” Kyungsoo says in a whisper as Kai once again generously pays for the stuff animal.
Once they are out of the shop, Kai intertwines his hand with Kyungsoo’s and without saying anything – their smiles still intact- they both walked to the cafeteria where for the first time today, Kyungsoo has completely forgotten about school and is open to the idea of being more than a university student.
Who knew a Fake ID can sometimes bring the sweetness and honesty of a man to Kyungsoo’s feet, spicing up his life into a world of possibilities.
