*95 days BeFoUr*
He heard him before he saw him. The perky laugh that provoked his lips to form a smile. Letting his gaze roam, he searched for him amidst the humongous crowd.
A feeling calm settled over the silver haired werewolf as he found what his heart searched for. Liam was standing almost in the middle of the hall, his brown eyes scrunched together, teeth exposed out of the perfect lips. Zayn let himself smile as the brunette socialised, talking to everyone in his careful tone and declining every invitation to celebrate, politely. Liam squirmed under his gaze, evidently aware of being watched.
Quickly, the dark skinned boy hid himself behind the pillar, trying his best to avoid an awkward encounter. He knew that Liam would catch up to his brand new hobby of stalking the Alpha Prince( thanks to his special senses) and they’d eventually have to deal with what was going on between them but not that day. That day, the youngest of the crescent pack had decided was too important for such petty things.
All the allied packs had gathered together to decide the date for Liam’s coronation. Actually, the date was to be decided by the seer. Apparently, the moon goddess would give her signs and then she would decipher them, hence providing them with a specific date. Zayn didn’t know what to think about it, he had never been visited by the moon goddess after all.
Sighing, the fifteen year old peeked from the pillar, letting the amber eyes wander for a moment before they settled on what they desired. The Alpha Prince was now sitting on the throne beside his father, the current Alpha, and his mother, the current Luna.
Zayn noticed how Liam already looked like the Alpha, his shoulder’s more straight, an aura of perfectness surrounding him. Even when he wasn’t ranked, the brunette had always shown the signs of an Alpha but alongside that he also had the qualities of a leader. Almost everyone in the pack was sure that he was going to succeed the throne.
Nepotism was not really how wolf packs worked. Again, it was the moon goddess who was in charge of the successions and it was merely a coincidence that Liam had kept his father’s throne.
Come to think of it everything was decided by the moon goddess. It was like she was living in a fiction world creating her own characters and deciding their fates.(A/N Does that mean I’m the moon goddess?😉😂) From rankings to mates to soulmate marks, everything was in her hands.
Basically, there were three ranks in the werewolf world. Alpha, beta and omega. Betas were the most common after that were the Alphas and the rarest were the omegas. Omegas were so rare that they almost seemed like a far-fetched story. Zayn had never in his entire life came across an omega and he was sure that he wouldn’t ever.
When the werewolf’s turned eighteen, they were ranked and they got their mate mark. The mark was actually sort of like a tattoo. Everyone had a different mark, that they only shared with their mates. Before they found their mate, the Wolf’s were supposed to guard their marks, keeping them hidden from the entire world. And once the mate was found, it would change morphing itself into something more intricate and it would also have the initials of both the soulmates in it. Zayn’s mothers had half an infinity sign on their arm such that when they joined them together it would form a complete infinity.
Honestly, it was all lost on Zayn, the need for marks to find their mates. What if someone wanted to be mated to someone who wasn’t destined for them? What would they do then?
When he was still a child, he didn’t exactly understand all of the dynamics but as he grew older it got clearer and clearer. And at the age of fifteen Zayn could positively say that he knew everything about his race. It was pretty simple. Everything was under the moon goddess. It was her game to play and she was cruel.
” You know it’s rude to stare.” The ravenette was startled out of his thoughts by the now familiar raspy voice. Breathing deeply, he looked behind himself to see Niall and Harry standing there. Much like him, they were also very casually dressed in their pyjamas.
Zayn wondered why they weren’t attending the packs celebration but he knew he wasn’t really in the place to ask that question. Letting his eyes close, he shook his head slightly.
” I wasn’t staring.” He mumbled. Niall raised his eyebrow at him.
” Of course,” Harry smirked, his voice laced with sarcasm. The curly haired beta placed his hands on his hips and walked over to stand next to Zayn.
” You know, Zee.” Niall joined them, his normally shining blue eyes soft with concern. ” I’ve known you long enough to know when you’re lying.” He said.
Zayn gulped, blinking his eyes open. The blonde was right. They had known each other since they were very young and the beta was always able to tell when he was lying. Something about how his voice weighed down his words.
Zayn shrugged, averting his gaze from his friends and looking back at the crowd. Again, the amber eyes spotted Liam immediately. The future Alpha king was now standing beside his mate, one of his arms wrapped around his waist. Zayn’s heart dropped at the sight, his lips forming an unintended pout. He swallowed the lump in his throat as a harsh emotion coursed in his blood stream, making him hot all over.
” So you and..” Harry placed one of his arms around Zayn’s shoulder. The younger lad just shook his head before promptly saying.
” It’s just an attachment.” It came out as a mere whisper. Harry nodded, unconvinced, his gaze fixed on the pup tucked under his shoulder. Zayn wasn’t looking at him but at his former best friend. A gasp emitted his lips as Liam’s eyes found his own. The bright smile on the Alpha’s face fell completely as he spotted the silver-haired lad.
” Attachment,” Harry asked observing his surroundings. Zayn didn’t answer him, too busy deciphering the emotion that blazed in those brown eyes. He blinked at him as an attempt to tell him that he saw him but Liam only glared at him before diverting his eyes to look at his Luna. He gave him a bright smile and kissed her softly on the lips. Zayn felt as if he had been stabbed and the weapon used was being rotated around in the wound.
” Yeah, just an attachment.” His heart felt like it had been crushed by a hydraulic press and suddenly he was numb, completely void of any emotion. It felt as if his soul had been sucked out of his body. ” Just an attachment.” He repeated as an attempt to store it in his mind so that he could convince his heart. He wanted to believe that and he wanted his friends to believe that but he knew the glisten in his eyes and the betrayal in his voice had given him away.
As much as Zayn wanted to believe that it was just an attachment, he knew it was far more than that ( for him at least.) And that was what had left him hurt.

* That day*
Silvia cradled her son as he kept on mumbling, his eyes red and puffy, snot dripping out of his nose. She was lost on what had happened that had caused him to break down like that but it wasn’t that rare ( not anymore.)
” He lied! He is a liar!” Zayn sobbed.
Silvia stroked his cheeks trying her best to calm him down but even she knew it wouldn’t work until he wanted it to. So she let him cry it out of his system. The beta was actually not in a good place herself. Seeing her only son breakdown like that almost every day wasn’t easy for her. But she was the strong one in the family and so she couldn’t let herself feel until it was the right time. She didn’t know when the right time would be or would there be a right time at all.
Her baby was dying and that was all she knew.
