I decided to do a double update in honor of Halloween. Enjoy 🎃🍂

🌻🌻🌻

Freddy bent forward, clutching his stomach as he burst into laughter.

“Great job, Conan,” he cackled when I finished telling him what happened. Parker’s eyes drilled at Freddy who simply raised his shoulders.

“Serves you right. You’re always being a jerk,” Freddy said.

“I didn’t mean to dirty his shoes,” I murmured quietly.

“It doesn’t matter. My shoes are still dirty,” Parker snapped.

“I’m-“

He shot me a glare.

“Don’t you dare apologize again.”

“Okay.”

“Parker, can’t you be nicer?” Freddy sighed, recovering from his giggles.

“Oh, you mean to the guy who ruined my favorite pair of shoes?” Parker said. I felt guilty, and was about to apologize, but remembered that Parker didn’t like it when I did, so I remained silent. Freddy began to scold Parker for not being civil enough with his words while Parker ogled a girl who walked past us, his eyes lingering on her breasts and then her swaying hips.

“… Are you even listening?” Freddy snapped.

“Absolutely,” Parker smirked. I turned towards the window, blinking in surprise when one of Parker’s shoe was missing.

“Parker, a bird just stole your shoe,” I murmured.

“Is that some kind of philosophical metaphor?”

I shook my head and pointed out the window at the large bird that had swooped down and took away one his sneakers.

“Look. A bird is flying away with your shoe,” I repeated.

Parker followed the direction of my finger, his eyes widening when he saw that his shoe was dangling in the air, held by the talons of what looked like an eagle.

“Do you know how expensive those shoes are?!” He cried, outraged. He stuck his head out the window and started yelling, “Hey, dumb fucker! Fly back here with my shoe!”

“I don’t think it speaks English,” I told him. The bird pooped, and Freddy couldn’t control his laughter.

“That shithead,” Parker sneered. He turned towards me. “Conan, hand me a notebook so I can throw it at the bird.”

“Okay.” I opened my bag and handed him my brand new notebook that I was going to use for today. Before Parker could throw it, Freddy snatched it out of his hand.

“You are not throwing Conan’s notebook out the window!” Freddy hissed, putting it back into my bag and zipping it shut.

“Dandelion, hand me the notebook,” Parker ordered, giving out his hand. I was about to open my bag but Freddy stopped me.

“No, don’t give it to him.”

“Conan doesn’t mind!” Parker growled.

“Because he’s too nice to say no!”

“Conan, if you’re my friend, you’ll give me the notebook.”

“Conan, if you’re my friend, you won’t give him your notebook. I was your friend first,” Freddie said.

“Yeah, well, if Dandelion wasn’t a weirdo, he said he’d date me,” Parker huffed proudly.

“And that is relevant how?”

“The bird dropped your shoe,” I said. The bird had let go of the laces and I watched the shoe fall from the sky. It looked like a mini-comet.

“We don’t need any more philosophical metaphors,” Parker groaned.

“It’s not a metaphor, shithead, the bird really dropped your shoe,” Freddy snorted.

“Where did it land?”

“That building over there,” I told him, pointing at it.

“That son of a…,” Parker continued to mutter under his breath. He ran down the hall in his socks, but he stopped, glancing over his shoulder. “Well? Are you two coming or not?”

“Yeah, yeah, I’m coming,” Freddy chuckled, jogging after Parker.

“Me too!” I smiled. I took off my shoes and ran after them in my socks. I’ve always wanted to run outside without my shoes.

We ran across campus and made it to the Science building. We climbed up the stairs, but on the second floor, I was out of breath. I wasn’t very athletic, and since my body was weaker than most, I’d always sit out during gym class for medical reasons. I’d spend the hour with the girls in my class who, for some reason, often couldn’t participate in gym class.

Tired, I crouched down.

“What are you doing?” Parker asked.

“Resting.”

“This isn’t the time to be resting!”

“But my legs hurt.”

Parker threw his hands in the air in despair and turned towards Freddy. Freddy asked me if I needed help, but I shook my head.

“I’ll help you up,” Freddy insisted gently, extending his hand. Before I could reply, Parker slapped it away.

“He doesn’t like touching people,” he growled, arms crossed over his broad chest. He stood between Freddy and me, almost in a protective way. “Just let him be, he’ll recover eventually.”

I looked at Parker gratefully, but he refused to look my way, as if he didn’t want to acknowledge his own kindness.

“Is that true?” Freddy asked, tilting his head to meet my gaze. I gave him a small smile.

“It is.”

Freddy looked surprised at first, but nodded.

“Okay, then we’ll wait. We’re in no rush anyway. Take your time,” he said. Freddy was so nice I wanted to cry. But that would be weird, so I didn’t.

“Thank you.”

When the dizziness went away, we continued our journey up the flight of stairs. The door to the rooftop was locked but Parker picked at it with a toothpick. Freddy rolled his eyes when the latch clicked, but I stared at Parker with wide eyes. His eyes caught mine, and he scowled.

“Why are you looking at me like that?” He asked.

“Because you’re amazing,” I told him.

He blinked in surprise, and quickly looked the other away.

“So fucking weird,” I heard him mutter under his breath. He spoke in a harsh tone, but I think he was blushing, but was hard to tell since he was looking the other way.

Parker pushed open then door and a gentle gust of wind greeted us when we walked onto the roof. We looked over the metal rail that protected the ledges, and saw that Parker’s shoe was hanging on the ledge below us. It was out of arm’s reach.

“How about I grab one of you two by the ankle?” Parker suggested.

“You are not dangling one of us over the roof ledge,” Freddy deadpanned.

“Come on Conan, I’ll dangle you over the ledge,” Parker said, completely ignoring Freddy. “Grab my shoe for me.”

“Parker!” Freddy cried in a mother’s voice whenever a child said something absurd.

“What? I need my shoe!”

“And Conan needs to live!”

Not really. But I kept the thought to myself.

“I’m sorry Parker, I can’t do it,” I said.

Parker looked at me and must have remembered that I had problems. If he was to dangle me over the roof, he’d have to hold my ankles, and I couldn’t handle physical contact. I thought that Parker would try and persuade me – like he did with the notebook – but he didn’t. Instead, he turned towards Freddy.

“Redhead, you’re my last hope.”

“I am not risking my life for your smelly shoe.”

“The shoe has sentimental value.”

“Sentimental value? Bitch, where?”

“Not the shoe, the shoelace.”

Freddy cocked a brow and his voice took a mocking tone. “Did one of your one night stands gift it to you?”

“No, my dead boyfriend did.”

Parker seemed to immediately regret letting the piece of information slip off his tongue. I could tell that he was distressed, and that he was truly upset about his shoe. Or rather, his shoelace. He inhaled deeply, running his hand through his hair in frustration before letting it fall to his side.

“I’ll stop having sex a week,” Parker finally said. Freddy crossed his arms over his chest.

“A month,” he bargained.

“Two weeks. And that is already asking for a lot.”

“Good, now I’ll finally get some sleep,” Freddy said.

“Dandelion, hold this for me,” Parker said, taking off his jacket and shoving it against my chest before I could agree. His jacket was heavy, and smelled strongly of cigarettes and men’s cologne, but his body warmth still lingered on the fabric and tickled my fingers.

“Be careful with Freddy. He might crack his skull on the concrete if you drop him,” I said.

They simultaneously turned towards me and gave me The Look.

Freddy climbed over the ledge and Parker grabbed his ankles. I wondered if this was what others adults did during their free time.

Freddie crawled over the ledge and pressed the palm of his hands against the wall of the building while Parker carefully lowered him. You could see the veins in Parker’s biceps when his muscles contracted, and the muscles near his chest became more prominent.

“Can you reach it?” Parker winced.

“Not yet. Lower me a bit more, will you?”

Parker tried to lower him, but he leaned forward a bit too much and lost his balance. I quickly wrapped my arms around his waist and pulled him back with the little strength I had. My body was pressed against Parker’s broad back, and I could feel his muscle beneath his shirt. His rock hard body aroused me, but it also made me feel sick, and I suddenly felt disgusting and guilty for touching Parker with my filth. But as much as I wanted to let go, I didn’t want my friends to die.

“I think I’m going to puke,” I announced.

“Hold it in, dandelion,” Parker warned me. “Don’t let me go.”

Parker was asking me two very difficult tasks. I clutched onto his shirt nonetheless, while trying to suppress the nausea. I wanted so badly to let Parker go, but I also wanted to keep him against me. The lustful thought made me hate myself even more.

“I got the shoe!” we heard Freddy exclaim.

“What are you boys doing?!” shouted someone from below. A large group of people, mostly students, were filming us from below, gasping and murmuring in shock. I realized that we looked very sketchy to their eyes. Two students holding into one who was dangling off the roof of four story building. A scary looking man rushed into the science building.

“Reel me back in before the supervisor gets here,” Freddy ordered. Together, Parker and I, but mostly Parker, pulled him back onto the roof. All the blood had rushed to Freddy’s face, and he was as bright as a tomato. Freddy hugged the ground and began to laugh hysterically. I guess that’s what happens when someone dangles you off the rooftop of a four story building. I laughed with him, but my body was shaking and the pain in my chest was hard to suppress, and I wanted to hide and cry more than anything.

The door flung open and the man who yelled at us stormed towards us.

“What in the name of tarter sauce are your boys doing?! Are you out of your minds?! If this is some kind of sick college prank, because I swear…”

But the three of us were too busy laughing ourselves silly. I didn’t know why, perhaps the situation was so absurd, so ridiculous, that all we could do was “laugh it off”, as we’d often say in the English language. My body was shaking from joy and pain. It was the first time I had felt even a fraction of happiness whilst my suffering, and it was with no doubt thanks to the presence of my new friends who sat beside me. Their laughter collided with mine, and together was created a beautiful symphony filled with youth, joy, and relief.

Wasn’t it beautiful? In a lifetime that held a billion possibilities and a multitude of prospects, the Universe had aligned my fate with Parker and Freddy, who made the world a little less lonely and much more wonderful.
