I was frustrated, if that word can define my current state of mind. I didn’t know what to do or how to feel.

I was shocked by the version of myself that showed up in the chemistry lab. I never imagined I could feel so jealous that I couldn’t think straight. My mind went out of control when I heard her complimenting someone else’s dreamily.

I huffed and put my head back on the bench.

We were practicing for our match, and it was already hectic. My mood was off, and the reason was right in front of me.

For the past 15 minutes and 27 seconds, Ruh had been talking continuously with Varun. Varun whispered something in her ear, and she slapped his arm playfully, both bursting into laughter.

What kind of joke was he telling her that made her laugh? She didn’t laugh like that with me.

“Jalan ho rahi hai,” I heard someone say in my ear, and I involuntarily nodded.

I turned to see Vani smirking at me.

(Are you feeling jealous)

“What…what do you mean I’m feeling jealous?” I asked, crossing my arms pretending that I am not jealous.

“Jealous? When did I say jealous? I said I have a scratch on my hand, and now it’s burning,” Vani replied, showing me her scratched hand.

I glared at her, and she just smiled sheepishly.

I went back to the classroom, where no one was present. I found my bag and took out my notebook to vent my frustration.

I always write random things on paper to relieve my stress. I started writing, but my mind was already on Ruh.

She lived rent-free in my heart, and now my mind was fully consumed by her thoughts.

I didn’t realize I had started writing her name until the whole page was filled.

Frustrated, I threw the pen in the dustbin, jealousy was overpowering my mind.

I didn’t know if it was jealousy or insecurity, but I didn’t like it. I didn’t like the idea of Varun being with my Ruh.

It hurt.

With no one in the classroom, the fans were turned off, and I started feeling sweaty. I was about to stand up to turn on the fan when I saw Ruh enter.

A frown was on her forehead as she walked to the switchboard and turned on the fan.

She came toward me, and I quickly crumpled the paper and put it in my pocket.

“Why were you sitting here in this scorching heat and didn’t even turn on the fan?” she asked, sitting beside me, closely.

My heart started racing.

I was stuck in my own dilemma.

“What happened? Are you not well?” She touched my forehead to check my temperature.

“Nothing, I’m fine,” I said, shifting a little.

She frowned but shifted closer to me.

“What happened?” she asked sternly, though she looked cute, fake anger doesn’t suit her.

“I’m feeling tired,” I lied, and she nodded in understanding.

“Vihaan,” she called me. Whenever she said my name, I felt like I was losing my senses. I had never thought my name could sound so beautiful until I heard her melodious voice saying it.

“Hmmm?”

“Will you teach me basketball rules so that I can enjoy the match? I was never interested in sports, so I don’t know any rules. I even tried to watch videos to understand, but I didn’t get it, so teach me everything. That way, whenever you play, I can come and enjoy the match,” she said in one breath, raising her eyebrows at me.

“Ahh, you will come to the match?” I asked nervously as she moved closer to me, slightly playing with the strands of hair falling on my forehead.

“If you will play in the match, then I will definitely watch you and the match,” she said, and my heart raced like crazy. Can this stupid heart of mine stop beating like it has to win a marathon.

What did she just say?

She ruffled my hair and sat back straight.

What the actual hell just happened? I felt my cheeks turning red. She looked at me and muffled me a laugh.

“Are you blushing?”

“Me? No, why would I blush?” I said, rubbing the back of my neck.

She laughed and pinched my cheeks a little.

“Oh gosh, you know you’re so cute,” she said, and I felt myself getting flustered again.

Why was I behaving like this?

Her touch still lingered on my cheek. As I gently touch my cheeks while being caught by her.

“Okay. The sir was calling you. And don’t forget to teach me basketball,” she said, handing me a bottle of juice.

I opened the bottle and took a sip.

She asked me to teach her basketball, not Varun.

Maybe I shouldn’t overthink the situation, I should just focus on my Ruh.

And I reminded myself, it’s not necessary that the situation is exactly as it seems, it could be different from what it looks like.

I found myself thinking and sipping the juice, a constant smile on my face.

β€’β€’β€’β€’β€’

After finishing my study session, I jammed on my gaming and played for two hours. It was seriously relaxing.

But now I was bored and headed to the kitchen to irritate my mumma.

She was trying to make a new dish.

No way.

I quickly ran to the study room, where Dad was sitting alone.

“Dad, do you know a huge storm is coming?” I said dramatically, and he looked at me in horror.

“No way, your mom is cooking again” he gasped, and I nodded.

“I’m not going to eat that food, we can’t break it with a hammer. Don’t worry, let me handle it.”

He stood up with determination and went to the kitchen.

“Adhya”, he called out to Mom a little sternly, and she glared at him, sternly saying,”Kya hai?”

(What is it?)

“Kuch nhi me toh bas keh rha tha ki aaj bahut sundar lag rhi ho tum,” he said nervously while opening the fridge and signaling me to ‘let’s eat whatever your mom cooks.’

(Nothing, I was just saying you look very beautiful today)

I widened my eyes at how quickly he changed his tone and shook my head as their romance started, and I definitely don’t want to be traumatized, again.

I called Yash and Siddharth at a conference, and we talked for no more than forty seconds. That’s how we are.

Yep, we don’t call much, we prefer gossiping in person.

I was feeling bored, I went to the balcony, but my Ruh wasn’t there. She hadn’t come to the balcony at all today.

I missed her so much.

I groaned, closed my eyes, and decided to go for a walk.

“Mom, I am going outside for a while,” i yelled and she replied “okay”

I opened the main gate and stood there for a few minutes, hoping Ruh would come, but there was no response.

I missed her like crazy. She had become so important to me that I felt empty if I didn’t see her for even an hour. I was becoming a lovesick puppy. She didn’t realize the power she held, just one look into her hazel brown eyes, and I am gone.

I didn’t realize I had walked to the park. I sat under a tree, closing my eyes.

It wasn’t calming, I just needed her.

I opened my eyes and noticed a kid sitting on a bench.

He looked familiar.

As I walked closer, my eyes widened in realisation as I saw him.
Chutku. (Kiddo)

I saw he was looking at the ground, his face was sad.

I approached him and asked, “What are you doing here alone?”

He looked at me, scrunching his eyes.

“I’m talking to you, Chutku. What are you doing here?” I asked, hands on my waist, questioning him.

“Aap jaane pehchane lag rhe ho,” he said, confused, putting his forefinger under his chin in thought.

(You’re looking familiar)

“I am…” I started to introduce myself, but then he clapped his hands and said,

“Ohh! Haan, Langur Bhaiya! Jisne mujhe chocolate diya tha,” He stood up, grinning like a fool.

I was stunned. Langur. Langur. He called me Langur. (Leaf monkey)

(Ohh! Yes, Langur Bhaiya! The one who gave me chocolate)

‘Muh par beizzati,’ my brain chimed in.

(insult to the face)

Huh, relax Vihaan, he’s just a kid. Where would a child get an idea of my handsomeness? Calm down. But this little demon…arghh.

“Yes, now what are you doing here?” I asked, gritting my teeth as anger took over.

He sat on the bench, lowering his head. I sensed something was bothering him, so I sat beside him.

He made a crying face and said, “Mera bleakup ho gaya,” he yelled slightly, though tears weren’t coming. Huh, drama queen.

(I had a break up)

But wait, did he say he had a bleakup? I mean Breakup.

“You mean you had a breakup?” I asked, and he looked at me, making a cute crying face. Aww, wait, don’t distract.

He nodded and wiped his nose on my shirt.

“Ewww” I exclaimed, slightly pulling my hand back so I wouldn’t hurt him, and he gave me a sheepish smile.

I looked at him, and this kid had a breakup.

Kya candy share karne se mana kar diya? Isliye bleak up….tch…break up hua.

(Refused to share candy? That’s why bleak up…tch…break up happened)

I mentally scoffed at my foolish thoughts.

“Okay, why did you have a breakup?” I asked, and he looked at me, making a dramatic crying face.

“You know she likes frogs. She even caught one frog and said that the frog is her friend. Eww! Who likes them? I don’t like those creatures,” he said, and I hugged him.

I could feel him. I understood him. “Us bro, us,” I said while hugging him.

“Meri wali ko toh cockroaches, chipkali, aur pata nahi kon kon se ajeeb janwaar aur keede makode pasand hain,” I said while hugging him, and we both kept hugging each other.

(My partner likes cockroaches, lizards, and all sorts of strange creatures and bugs)

But soon, we realized what we were doing and pulled back, embarrassed.

He looked at me and started dusting off his shirt. I huffed and began dusting off my shirt, glaring at him.

A few minutes later, we both sat there.

He asked me, “Langur bhaiya, aapka naam kya hai?”

(What’s your name)

“Oh, I am Vihaan Raichand,” I said, trying to shake his little hand.

Aww, his hands were so small and felt soft, but not softer than my Ruh’s.

“Oh, by the way, what’s your name?” I asked, to which he grinned.

“Wait.”

He stood up, trying to find something in his pocket.

“Oh please wait a minute more, I forgot I kept it in my right pocket,” he said and, by his reaction, it seemed he found it.

He took out his goggles, wore them, and looked at me, striking a pose with his left hand in his pocket and his right hand forward for a handshake.

“Raj Malhotra. Naam to suna hoga.”

(You must have heard the name)

I rolled my eyes at this tiny insect. “Dhai fut ka toh hai, aur harkatein dekh rahe ho.”

(He’s two and a half feet tall, and looks at his antics)

I tightly smiled and shook his tiny little hands.

“Hi, Raj.” He grinned at me, and we talked a lot.

Okay, Chutku is not that bad.

Then I heard his name, “Raj.”

I saw Neeta aunty walking, she lived in the lane behind ours. My mom had met her many times, and we had become friends.

“Hello, aunty,” I greeted her, and she smiled at me.

“How are you, Vihaan?” she asked, and I replied, “As always, handsome and dashing,” which made her laugh.

“Raj, I told you not to be grumpy and come here alone,” she said sternly, and the little boy wobbled his lips, on the verge of crying.

“I am angry with you,” he said, crossing his arms and sitting in anger.

“Aunty, is he your son? You have only one daughter, Saisha?” I asked, and she nodded.

“Ahh, actually, Raj is my nephew. His parents had to go to another city due to some issues, so he is living with me. Saisha has gone with her father for her friend’s birthday party. And this little kiddo was angry because I promised to take him to a fair, but I received a call from my office about an important meeting and I need to prepare a presentation for tommorow, and in top of that today is the last day of the fair,” she explained, looking at the pouting Chutku.

I felt sad for him.

“Where is the fair?” I asked, and she told me the address and I nodded.

Chutku is also feeling sad. I feel bad for him. Neeta aunty was trying to make him understand.

“Can I take chutku….I mean Raj, with me to the fair?” I asked.

Chutku looked at me, his eyes sparkling.

Neeta aunty hesitantly said, “No, it’s alright. I’ll make him understand, and you don’t need to…”

“But I also took Saisha to a mall, remember? I promised to take care of him,” I insisted.

Neeta aunty didn’t agree at first, but eventually, after my and Chutku’s requests, she nodded in agreement.

Chutku jumped in happiness and danced like a monkey.

“Okay, I’ll drop him at your house in an hour,” she said, and I nodded.

I went home and called Mom.

“Mumma, I am going to a fair with Raj, Neeta aunty’s nephew,” I said, and she looked at me, a frown appearing on her face.

“Vihu, you don’t know how to take care of yourself, and you want to take care of a kid?” she replied.

“Mom, I have taken Saisha to a mall, which is really far from the fair. I will take care of Chutku, trust me. He was really sad,” I argued, and Mom nodded.

Mumma is too soft when it comes to kids, her heart melts in microseconds.

“But still, tum ho to nikamme. Jisse khudke shoes nahi sambhala jaata, woh ek chota baccha sambhalega?” she said.

(But still, you are useless. How can someone who can’t handle his shoes handle a small child?)

I widened my eyes at her. I still remember I had gone for a ride on a bike secretly and om top of that without a license and didn’t realize when one of my shoes fell off.

Damn, she still taunts me about it.

Thank God she didn’t know I secretly went on the bike. Otherwise, ab tak meri aatma bhatak rhi hoti.

“Mom, please…” I said in frustration.

“No, I won’t. I need to reassure myself. Take Prisha with you,” she said, calling Prisha di.

Prisha di came down wearing a red dress and diamond earrings Dad gifted her on her 20th birthday. She had done her makeup today. I didn’t want to agree, but my sister looked beautiful. Sundar Chudail.

(Beautiful Witch)

“Go with Vihu to the fair. He is taking Neeta’s nephew. You will go, then I will reassure that the kid will be under good observation,” she said, glaring at me.

“Mom, no. I have an important meeting. I have to attend my best friend’s birthday party,” she replied, and Mom and I both looked at her.

Prisha di said bye and left.

Mom sighed but looked at me as her eyes twinkled.

I didn’t know what she meant.

“Why don’t you take Ruhanika with you?” she said, and my heart raced just at the mention of her name.

What? Ruh? Me and Ruh together?

I felt my cheeks already started heating up. Ahh, finally, I am going to spend time with her.

“Mumma, I love you,” I quickly hugged her tightly, grinning.

Mumma smacked my head, and I pouted.

“Ab yahi khada rahega ya use puchega bhi? Aur sun, tameez ke saath uski mumma se permission lena, naak mat karana meri,” Mom said, and I sheepishly smiled at her.

(Will you stand here now or even ask her? And listen, take permission from his mother politely, don’t ruin my reputation)

“Oh, don’t worry, I am going,” I quickly ran but stopped in front of the fridge, checking my reflection. I fixed my hair and thought I was ready.

I rang her bell, and the door was opened by the person I didn’t want to see.

Kunal bhai glared at me.

We both stood there.

“Kya chahiye?” he asked sternly.

I involuntarily replied, “Aapki behen… Ruh-anika se kuch kaam tha.”

(What do you want?)

(Your sister….I had some work to do with your sister Ruhanika.)

I controlled myself as I saw his veins popping out in anger.

He moved aside, making way for me to enter, but someone pulled me by the collar. I stopped and looked at Kunal bhai.

“You don’t need to go to her room; I’ll call her,” he said, and called out Ruh.

“Coming” she replied.

“Main baith jaao?” I asked him to annoy him.

(Cam I sit down?)

He glared at me, but I wasn’t going to listen, I sat and crossed my legs, looking at him.

He muttered something under his breath in anger and closed his eyes in frustration.

Ruh came downstairs and saw me.

She came to sit beside me, but Kunal bhai came and sat next to me, drinking water.

She sat in front of the couch and eyed me.

I could feel Kunal bhai’s eyes on me as I started shivering. Damn he is looking at me like he will eat me alive.

“Woh, I was going to a fair with my aunt’s nephew. Remember, Chutku… I mean the kid you helped in school? So, Mom told me to invite you too. Will you go with me?” I asked, feeling nervous.

She wasn’t blinking, just looking at me, and then she smiled.

“I would love to, but…” She glanced at Kunal bhai, and he nodded, smiling at her.

“But Mumma…” she said.

“I’ll take permission from aunty,” I said but Kunal bhai patted my shoulder and replied, “Don’t worry, I’ll ask her.”

He stood up and went to Aunty to take permission.

And my feelings were going out of control and grabbing the opportunity, I stood up and sat beside Ruh, but she shifted away, so I shifted closer to her.

“That couch has so much space. Go and sit there,” she said, hesitating a little.

But i ignored and sat closely with her she didn’t argue after that.

“Why didn’t you come to the balcony?” I asked, and she frowned, replying, “Oh, I slept.”

I nodded until I heard Kunal bhai’s voice, “You can go, Ruhii.”

But he stopped as he looked at me. I quickly stood up, and he was glaring at me.

I turned my face and told Ruh, “oh okay, get ready, Ruh. Neeta aunty will come in half an hour.”

She stood up.

“What?” I asked as he was still glaring at me.

“37 times” he said, and i frowned at him.

“37 times you have been staring at my little sister,” he said looking irritating and gritting his teeth.

“Tch tch…wrong Kunal bhai, it’s 38 times…and second thing me ghoor nhi rha tha, me toh aapki behen ko nihaar rha tha” ,i sheepishly grinned at him.

“You…..” Kunal bhai was about to said, and before he throw his sleeper at me, i ran out of his house yelling, “okay bye”

I came back and got ready in a black t-shirt with a green-black-grey check shirt, and jeans pairing it with white sneakers.

I set my hair and waited for Neeta aunty.

Then I saw Chutku coming, holding her hand.

Aww.

Wait, I don’t like him.

“Chaliye bhaiya,” he said, but I rolled my eyes.

“Wait, someone else is coming,” and he nodded.

Neeta aunty said, “Thank you, Vihaan, and I put all the essentials in Raj’s bag. If he troubles you, just take him back,” and she warned chutku.

I smiled at her, and Chutku stood beside me.

Soon, Ruh came, her hazel brown eyes met mine.

She was wearing a mint green sundress with little daisies imprinted on her dress, paired with a denim jacket and white sneakers. She had her hair open with white and baby pink butterfly clips on both sides and carried a sling bag.

She looked so pretty.

The way she smiled at me made my heart race as she approached. I felt like I would faint at any moment.

She came closer, and I was about to say something, but she bent down and hugged the little demon.

“Oh my baby, how are you?” she squished him and ruffled his hair, a constant smile making its way to her face.

Chutku was still in shock, and I noticed him blushing.

“Aap toh bahut sundar lag rahi ho,” Chutku sheepishly said, hugging her too tightly wrapping his Little arms around her.

(You are looking very beautiful)

Damn, this little demon is taking my place.

She hugged him and stood up.

And they both forgot my existence.

No way, now I have to handle this chutku.

But my eyes fell on Ruh, the way she smiled makes my day. The way her eyes hold the power to melt me.

This girl is making me lose control.

I am falling for her more every day.
