I’m walking along with Ruh and this little demon, but it seems like they’ve forgotten that I’m also walking with them.

They’re so engrossed in their giggling and chatting all the time that it almost feels like I’m invisible to them.

I shook my head and walked behind them.

Suddenly, Chutku stops in his tracks. Ruh, concerned, immediately asks, “What happened, baby?”

Her voice is soft as she looks down at him, and chutku looks at her with his doe-like eyes full of innocence.

“Offo, mujhe toh aapka naam hi nahi pata,” he says, slightly tapping his palm against his forehead, as if he just realized something very important.

(Oh, I don’t even know your name)

I can’t help but chuckle at his antics, he is such a cute little demon who just wants my Ruh’s attention.

Ruh smiles at him and replies, “You can call me Ruhii,” and Chutku nods eagerly, his eyes lighting up at the sound of her name.

I frowned and immediately said, “didi”

“Call her Ruhii didi,” I say to Chutku, teasing him as he glares at me, his face turning into a cute little frown. But he glared at me and turned towards her.

“Okay, I will call you Ruhii…ji,” he said and turned to me giving his devilish smile.

I rolled my eyes at him.

She smiles at him warmly, and asks him, “What’s your name?”

Chutku replies while blushing as I see his cheeks turning pink, “Raj”

I watch as this little demon holds her hand, and I immediately step in between them, grabbing Chutku’s hand firmly.

He looks up at me, glaring, but I just roll my eyes and turn toward Ruh, smiling as I do. She looks at me with a confused expression, and for a second, I see the confusion in her eyes. But I assured her with a simple glance, and she nodded in understanding.

I grip Chutku’s tiny hand tightly as he tries to pinch me in protest.
But if he’s smart, then I’m smarter. I’m not going to let this little demon win so easily.

Ruh clears her throat, bringing my attention back to her. I glance at her, silently asking if she needs something.

She clears her throat again, and this time she flips her hair back slightly, adjusting the clips in her hair.

Can she stop doing that? I feel like I’m drowning in her beauty. The sunlight falls directly on her face, making it glow, highlighting every detail, from the purity in her eyes to the soft curve of her lips. There’s something so mesmerizing about her, about the way every inch of her face is so perfect. Even the mole on her left eyebrow only adds to the charm, making her eyes stand out even more.

She snaps her fingers in front of me, pulling me out of my Ruhzone. I blink and look at her, feeling a little flustered.

She raises an eyebrow, and I quickly shake my head.

“Um… mai kaisi lag rahi hoon?” she asks, fidgeting with her fingers, looking at the ground, biting her lips nervously, scratching her palm with her thumbs. Slowly, she runs her fingers through her hair, caressing the strands and tucking them behind her ear.

(How do I look?)

I can’t control these erupting tickling sensations all over my body.

Me being a lovesick puppy, I involuntarily say with a hint of teasing, “Adrak wali chai ki tarah, ekdam kadak lag rahi ho.”

She looks at me in confusion, and I see Chutku, with his tiny palm, hit his forehead and shake his head.

“Ahh… adrak wali chai?” she chuckles softly, and then bursts into laughter.

I realize just how dumb that sounded. I can’t believe I just gave her that compliment. Blood rushes to my cheeks, and a wave of embarrassment hits me. Wow, Vihaan what a way to embarrass yourself.

I stand there, trying to avoid looking at her as she laughs and walks ahead. Chutku looks at me, his little arms crossed, shaking his head in disbelief.

“Bhaiya, aapko toh tareef bhi karni nahi aati,” he says, walking towards Ruh with little steps.

(Bro, you don’t even know how to compliment)

He grabs her hand, and I take his other hand, walking beside them.

This little guy is clearly trying to impress my Ruh.

‘See you have so much competition,’ my brain chimed with a hint of teasing.

Correct.

Why do I have so much competition?

He starts babbling to her in his cute little voice, and I know Ruh’s heart is so pure that she’ll definitely melt at his words and innocent antics.

Today, she looks carefree, almost as if she’s forgotten everything around her. I didn’t realize it before, but her smile today seems different. There’s a certain calmness to it, like she’s finally found some peace within herself.

Although I don’t like this tiny insect with her, but, if he is the one making her smile, then I’ll allow him to be with her, for now.

We enter the fair, and of course, this little insect runs off, buzzing all over the place. He lets go of our hands and starts running, his eyes wide with excitement, and a grin spreading across his face. He’s so happy.

Ruh immediately goes to him, scolding him slightly for running off without holding her hand.

Huh, serves him right.

I glance at him, smirking, and bend down to tie my shoes.

As I do, I whisper in his ear, “Tch…tch….Ruh se daat pad gayi”

(Tch…tch…you got scolded by Ruh)

He looks at me, scrunching his little face in the slightest bit of anger. But then, he looks up at Ruh and pouts, his head lowering to the ground. His lips wobbled a little as if he was going to cry. I know…i freaking know….this little demon is acting like he is about to cry.

I roll my eyes. I know exactly what he is doing.

And, of course, Ruh’s heart melts at his display of sadness.

She bends down to his level, caressing his cheek with a tenderness I can’t help but feel envy of this tiny insect.

“I’m sorry, baby,” she cooed him.

“I didn’t mean to scold you. I was just scared that if you ran in the crowd, you might get hurt or lost. Please don’t cry, I’m sorry, baby.”

She hugs him, and of course, he hugs her back.

But then, he looks at me with a mischievous smile. I realize now that he was just acting all along.

Damn.

I roll my eyes at him as Ruh stands up, holding his hand.

My inner voice tries to calm me down.

‘Control, Vihaan. He’s just a kid.’

Yeah, a kid in the disguise of a demon.

“Ruhii ji, can we go for that ride?” Chutku asks, his voice filled with excitement as he points to the caterpillar ride, jumping in excitement.

She smiles and nods before heading toward the ticket counter. She buys two tickets and hands them to me. I frown, but before I can say anything, she grabs my hand and places the tickets in my palm, closing my fingers around them.

“What?” I ask, confused.

She sighs.

“Go with Raj to that ride. He’s a kid.”

Where did she learn to boss me around like that? But damn this version of her is freaking hot, bossing around me.

“I’m not going on that children’s ride,” I huff, not wanting to embarrass myself.
It’s a kids’ ride. I feel shy.

Ruh crosses her arms, standing in front of me with narrowed eyes. “Zyada nautanki mat karo aur chup chap jao Raj ke saath. Dekho, bohot saare parents apne bachon ke saath ja rahe hain, so, can’t you go with Raj” she says, glaring at me in a way that I can’t quite explain but she looks so Adorable.

(Don’t make so much drama and quietly go with Raj. Look, a lot of parents are going with their kids, so can’t you go with Raj?)

Damn, does she know what she’s doing to me right now? I take a deep breath, feeling myself stiffen at her gaze. She’s too pretty, and the way she scrunches her eyes, pretending to be angry, is my absolute favourite thing from now on.

“Vihaan…” she calls my name softly, and I snap out of it, quickly replying, “I’m not going.”

Chutku looks at us, his tiny face full of confusion. I glance at Ruh, and my heart skips a beat as I see her eyes soften.

“Vihaan pleeeaassseee” she said, her eyes sparkling in sunlight, batting her eyes, in a soft voice which i can’t deny, exaggerating the word please.

I turned and rubbed my chest as I could feel my heart beating fast. Calm down, Vihu.

“Urgh, fine,” I finally said.

Chutku jumps in excitement, and Ruh claps her hands in joy, giving him a high-five.

These two are just….adorable.
Of course, my Ruh is more.

I smile and take Chutku’s hand, leading him to the caterpillar ride.

Ahh, it’s embarrassing.

We sit down, and I buckle Chutku in. As I glance up, I notice Ruh is recording us.

Chutku waves his little hand at her, and Ruh smiles, blowing him a kiss.

The ride starts, and I feel my face flush with embarrassment. I lower my head, pretending not to care. Of course, I feel a little embarrassed, being a 17-year-old riding a 4-year-old children’s rides.

But nevermind, it’s a cute caterpillar.

Chutku enjoys every second, laughing and waving his hands in the air.

When the ride ends, I help him out and hold his hand.

“Wow, I enjoyed it so much. Now, let’s go to the next ride,” he says excitedly, running ahead.

This time, it’s the train ride.

“I already went on the caterpillar ride. It’s your turn, Ruh,” I tell her, and she looks at me with surprise, her eyes widening.

But I turned to the other side and she sighed.

She takes Chutku’s hand and walks with him toward the ride.

I record everything, but when the ride goes up a little, I notice Chutku tightly holding Ruh’s waist, hugging her more tightly. Ruh is gently calming him down.

Damn, this little demon didn’t get scared on the caterpillar ride with me, but now he’s clinging to Ruh.

Does he think I don’t see through his tricks?

They both come out of the ride, and Chutku pulls Ruh’s hand, dragging her toward a Mickey Mouse statue nearby.

“Bhaiya, click our pictures,” he says excitedly, striking a pose, while Ruh looks at him, amused.

“Ruhii ji, give a pose and look at the camera,” he instructs, and Ruh stands next to him, holding his hand.

He flashes me a two-finger peace sign, smiling his toothless grin.

I can’t help but laugh as I click their picture. They look so cute together.

Chutku goes on every ride, and this time, we all go together.

Chutku sits between us, and we enjoyed every ride.

“Bhaiya, let’s go there”

We walked through the lively fairground, surrounded by stalls and games.

The sun hung low in the sky, casting a warm golden glow over everything. Laughter from children filled the air, blending with the hum of families moving from one booth to the next.

The sweet aroma of cotton candy and freshly popped popcorn wafted through the breeze, while colorful lights from the game stalls flickered in excitement.

The first stall that caught my attention was the Balloon dart Game.

A row of brightly colored balloons hung on a large wooden board, just waiting for someone to pop them with a dart.

“Bhaiya, can you win that car for me?” Chutku asked, his eyes sparkling with hope.

I turned to Ruh, and she was giving me the same pleading look, silently urging me to try.

I straightened up, adjusting my collar in fake confidence, though I had no idea what I was doing.

Sure, I was good in many games or maybe mostly video games, but real-life darts? Not so much.

“Which car do you want, Chutku?” I asked, glancing over at the red car on the top shelf that he pointed to.

“Ahh…Vihaan, do you even know how to throw darts?” Ruh teased, raising an eyebrow.

“Tch tch, you don’t know much about me, Ruh,” I replied, giving her a wink.

“Now, you both just….watch me,” I said, turning to face the target.

“Yeah, we’ll watch you,” she said, rolling her eyes and pulling Chutku close to her to avoid getting pushed by the crowd.

I walked up to the stall and paid the game vendor. He handed me a dart, and I took a deep breath. I had five chances to hit a balloon and win a prize. I grabbed the first dart, focused on the target, and threw it.

Throw!

The dart flew, but I missed it completely.

It landed far from the balloons.

I tried all other four darts also but guess what? I missed every single target.

Laughter erupted around me.

I glanced at Ruh, who was desperately trying to hold back her laughter but ultimately burst out giggling.

Chutku glanced at her and couldn’t help but join in.

“See, it’s just a warm-up. I won’t miss the next round,” I said, trying to cover my embarrassment as they continued laughing.

“Okay, okay, we won’t laugh,” Ruh said between chuckles.

But I glared at both of them, and Chutku covered his mouth with his tiny hands, trying to hold in his giggles.

Ruh placed her finger to her lips in a trying to stop her giggles, but I knew they were both still laughing on the inside.

I took a deep breath and asked the stall owner for another round of darts.

I paid again, and he handed me another set.

I aimed carefully and threw!

This time, I hit one target, but the other fours missed.

“1 out of 10. Not bad, Mr. Raichand,” Ruh said, clapping her hands, with a hint of teasing that is reflecting from her eyes.

“You’re acting like you’ll hit all the targets,” I said rolling my eyes.

“Are you challenging me, Mr. Raichand?” she smirked, walking toward me slowly, her hands behind her back.

“Yes, Ms. Oberoi,” I said, looking straight in her hazel brown eyes that reflects mischievousness.

She walked closer, and I momentarily fumbled, but kept my composure.

In a low whisper, she said, “Now you watch me, Mr. Raichand.”

She pulled back and casually flipped her hair, brushing across my face.

She took the darts, aimed, and within 15 seconds, she hit all five targets, knocking the balloons down one by one.

My jaw dropped.

How did she do that?

She squealed with joy and patted herself on the shoulder, proud of her skills.

She turned to me with raised eyebrows, and I was still shocked.

Damn! My girl is truly amazing.

I just smiled at her and clapped.

She giggled at my reaction, then picked up the red car and handed it to Chutku.

Chutku, ecstatic, broke into a victory dance.

“Thank you, Ruhii ji!” he yelled, jumping up to hug her legs in excitement.

I couldn’t help but laugh as he hugged her but the poor guy reached only up to her waist.

She ruffled his hair, clearly delighted by his happiness.

After that, we moved to the next game, ring tossing. There was a big table in front of us, covered with all sorts of things like toys, chips, chocolates, hair accessories, and other small items.

Our goal was to throw plastic rings onto the items we wanted to win. Some things were big and easy to aim for, while others were small and tricky.

“Do you want anything, Raj?” Ruh asked him.

He didn’t respond, still admiring the red car in his hand.

I noticed a beautiful clip on the table-a sage green bow clip with a pearl in the center, attached to a gold chain with a small charm. It was delicate and pretty.

I quickly made my way to the counter, paid for the game, and grabbed the rings.

There were only three.

I closed my eyes and threw the first ring, but I missed it

Taking a deep breath, I aimed for the clip again, but missed once more.

Frustrated, I ran my fingers through my hair.
“Why am I so bad at this?”

I took a moment to calm myself and aimed for the clip once more. This time, the ring landed around the number 30.

Number 30. I looked up to the racks there was a toy train set winning prize of number 30.

Wait… what? I looked up, confused, and saw that the toy train set was now mine.

But the clip-someone else had won it.

I sighed, a little disappointed, but the uncle handed me the train set.

Maybe Chutku would like it?

I saw Ruh and Chutku near the next stall, so I waved to him and walked over.

“Would you like the train set?” I asked. He shook his head.

“I don’t like trains. I only like cars,” he said, proudly showing me his little car collection.

I chuckled, shaking my head as he skipped back to Ruh.

Now, what was I supposed to do with this?

Just as I was about to leave, someone tapped me on the shoulder.

I turned to find a man in his late 30s, nervously fidgeting, standing with a child holding his hand.

“Yes?” I asked.

The man looked at me, slightly embarrassed, and said, “Ah, if you don’t mind… my son really wanted that toy train set, and I couldn’t win it. He’s crying… if it’s possible, could you please exchange it? I’d be happy to give you the clip I won instead.” He smiled awkwardly, offering the sage green clip.

A smile spread across my face, and I nodded.

Damn! I thought I lost this clip.

I am telling you, this clip only meant to shine to My Ruh. Its place is there, where it will truly sparkle.

“Of course, you can have the train set.”

The man’s face lit up with relief, and I handed over the toy train set in exchange for the clip.

His son gave me his toothless smile and thanked me, I ruffled his hair.

“Enjoy,” I said with a grin.

I tucked the clip into my pocket and turned to leave.

“Vihaan, Raj is hungry,” Ruh said, and Chutku looked up at me, saying,

“Yes, Bhaiya, all the rats in my tummy are dancing, Let’s go”

“Fine, but what about the Ferris wheel?” I asked.

“We will ride, after eating yummy food, and colourful lights are still not on the fellis wheel ” Chutku told me in his cute voice.

Ruh chuckled softly and told him, “baby, it’s Ferris wheel”, and he tried to mimic her.

I looked at Ruh, asking if she wanted to ride it. She shook her head, and replied “Yep, we can come later. For now, let’s go. Raj is hungry.”

I held Chutku’s hand, and Ruh held his other hand while he was too absorbed in his car to notice anything else.

“What do you want to eat?” I asked.

He immediately replied, “Pizza!”

I raised an eyebrow. “Where am I supposed to find pizza here?, there are not even pizza stalls here?”

“There’s a cafe nearby just within 15 minutes distance. I’m sure they have pizza on the menu, and besides it’s better to eat in silence” Ruh said.

We entered the cafe, and thank God they served pizza, or Chutku would have been in tears.

He ran to a corner seat and patted the seat beside him for Ruh to sit.

Ruh, pulled out her sanitizer and handed it to us. It was a sight I’d seen a hundred times. This girl literally sanitizes her hands every freaking hour.

I passed Chutku the menu, and this little demon took forever to decide.

“Anything you want?” I asked, taking a sip of water.

He pouted and said, “I’m so confused”

Ruh laughed and helped him pick something.

He finally settled on his choice, and I turned to her.

“Anything else?”, I asked her and she replied, “Nothing.”

I went ahead and placed the order, a medium-sized sweet corn and jalapeno pizza, not my choice- the tiny insect saw this picture on the menu and now he wants, French fries- as per Chutku’s demands, and chocolate shakes-since both little demon and Ruh are die-hard fans of chocolate.

Soon, the food arrived, and we dug in.

Chutku was busy telling Ruh the names of every vegetable on the pizza and explaining the pizza-baking process, while Ruh listened attentively.

How could she listen to such a boring monologue with so much focus?

‘Just like she always listens to you,’ my mind whispered.

A faint smile tugged at my lips as I realized how much I talk nonstop, always yapping continuously, yet she always listens patiently without ever complaining.

Soon, Chutku finished his chocolate shake and gave a toothless smile to Ruh.

“Ruhii ji, I finished the whole glass” he said.

Ruh smiled at him, taking a tissue to wipe his mouth.

“Very good, baby. You finished the whole glass,” she said and kissed him on the left cheek.

“Oh gosh, you are so cute, Raj,” she said, giving him another kiss on the right cheek.

I placed the empty glass on the table with a loud thud. Thank God it didn’t break.

She kissed him. Freaking kissed him.

I stared at the scene, bewildered.

She looked at me, puzzled. I glanced at my glass, picked it up, and took a sip of my shake, finishing it off, even though it was too cold.

“I’ve also finished the whole glass of shake,” I said, looking at her.

She was still processing what I meant.

“Yeah, I can see that,” she replied, pointing at the empty glass.

“So, like Chutku, I also finished it, so….I mean….” I tried to say the correct words.

I also deserved that reward for finishing the whole glass? Don’t you think?

She cleared her throat before responding, “Okay….so, do you want more? Should I order another one?”

I sighed and shook my head. “No, thanks.”

I pouted, and that’s when I noticed the little demon-Chutku-looking at me with a teasing smile, his thoughts clearly dancing around in his mischievous little mind.

Tiny insect.

Ruh stood up.

“I’ll be back in a little while, going to the restroom,” she told me.

I nodded in response.

As she walked away, I turned to Chutku. This little guy was smiling like a maniac.

I grabbed a tissue and wiped his cheeks.

“Eee bhaiya!” he glared at me cutely, but I continued wiping, noticing the light fainted lipstick marks, I wiped all the marks, carefully not wanting to hurt him.

Once I finished, I patted his shoulder and was proud of myself for erasing all traces of Ruh’s from his cheek.

He glared at me and muttered, Jalkukde kahi ke, main Ruhii ji ko bolunga ki aapko kiss nahi mili isliye aapne masoom se bachche ko pareshan kia….”

(You are jealous human, I’ll tell Ruhii ji that you didn’t get a kiss, so you decided to trouble the innocent child…)

Before he could finish, I quickly went beside him and covered his mouth with my hand. As he was practically shouting.

“Hehe, Chutku, see, don’t tell Ruh anything, okay?….I’ll….i’ll….ahhnn…i’ll help you patch things up with that girl you like,” I said, smiling sheepishly.

Damn, what am I doing?

‘Baccho ke rishte krwa rhe ho, aur kya’ my brain mocked me.

(Helping kids with their relationships)

Yehi din bacha tha dekhne ke liye.

(This was the only day left to see)

He looked up at me, eyes gleaming. “Sacchi?” he asked.

(Really)

I relaxed a little bit because I knew he was a kid, so, it’s easy to manipulate him, but remember he is not like other kids, you have to play safe, Vihu.

“What’s the name of the girl?” I asked.

“Simran,” he replied, taking another bite of pizza.

“Raj and Simran….Wow, DDLJ version 2.0,” I said.

He looked at me with a grin.

“Okay, I won’t tell Ruhii ji anything more, but first, give me some chocolate.”

I frowned.

He sighed and said, “you have three chocolates in your pocket. Give me one and the other two to Ruhii ji. She likes chocolates.”

He can be a tenacious detective in future, I am telling you.

I chuckled at his observation. “Chutku, you really know everything,”

I said as I took one of the chocolates and handed it to him.

“Chutku, you already had a chocolate shake. Go home, refrigerate it, before it melts, and eat it tomorrow,” I repeated, and he nodded, satisfied.

It seemed like keeping chocolates around had become a habit. I often ate them when I was stressed, a small relief for my anxiety. But now, keeping them for Ruh felt like something new. As soon as I learned she liked them, I made sure to keep some with me, though I always made sure she didn’t overeat sweets. Like a good girl, she agreed every time.

“What are you guys gossiping about?” I heard Ruh’s voice as she sat down in my place.

“Boys’ talk,” Chutku replied sheepishly, giggling.

I couldn’t help but smile. I loved days like this. I just wanted to be with her every second. These feelings were corrupting my brain and heart. My thinking was clouded by her presence because now my mornings started with her, and my days ended with her. I was acting cheesy, I knew that, but I couldn’t help it.

Suddenly, I heard someone calling my name. “Oh, Vihaan, you’re here!” A loud, chirpy voice cut through my thoughts.

Meera.

Can this day get any more complicated?
