The bell rang, and she quickly packed her bag, casting a final glance around the room before heading out. I watched her wave goodbye, feeling a mix of emotions as she walked away.
My heart raced as I observed her figure disappearing down the hallway.
The thought of her meeting someone else made me feel restless and uneasy.
I couldn’t shake off the discomfort inside my heart.
A sudden wave of frustration wash over me. In a moment of irritation, I banged my head on the library table, causing a sharp pain to shoot through me.
“Ouch” I exclaimed, quickly gathering my things and leaving for home, my mind still occupied by thoughts of her.
I didn’t understand why the thought of her with someone else affected me so deeply.
When she told me that this guy was very special, I felt a tight knot forming in my chest. Each moment felt like suffocating as I lost myself in these troubling thoughts.
Is this how it feels for everyone who likes someone? Does the thought of them being with someone else really stir such insecurity? If I admitted that I was feeling insecure, it would be true. Perhaps that guy really was special in her life, and the thought made me feel like I was losing my mind.
Before I knew it, I was home. My mom usually came back from school in the evening, so the house was empty.
I dashed to my room, tossing my bag onto the couch before jumping onto my bed. My mind was in turmoil, filled with confusing thoughts. I ran my fingers through my hair in frustration, loosening my tie and feeling a sense of suffocation.
I walked to the balcony, hoping to catch a glimpse of her.
But her window was closed. Where was she? She should have been back by now. I waited for what felt like an eternity until I finally spotted her.
A wave of relief washed over me, only to be replaced by a sharp pang of jealousy when I noticed she was with another guy. I squinted to see better, and my heart sank as I recognized him-Varun….means he is her childhood friend.
They seemed to fit well together.
I closed my eyes tightly and rushed back to my room, changing out of my uniform and collapsing onto my bed. I felt a mixture of frustration and anger boiling inside me. My fingers tangled in my hair as I tried to calm myself down.
And didn’t realise when my eyelids felt like closing, I must have drifted off to sleep because the next thing I knew, my mom was entering my room.
“Kya karu is nikamme ladke ka? Sara saman bikher ke rakha hai. Vihu, ye koi jagah hai uniform phekne ki? Utho abhi aur sab washing machine me daalo” she scolded.
(What should I do with this useless boy? He’s scattered everything! Vihu, is this any place to throw your uniform? Get up and put it all in the washing machine)
I had carelessly thrown my uniform on the couch and floor.
“Vihaan…” she continued, her voice stern.
“What happened, Mom?” I asked, rising to my feet, feeling nervous under her gaze.
“How many times have I told you to clean the water from the floor? I could slip” she glared at me, and I mumbled an apology.
“Aisi harkatein rahi tumhari toh koi ladki shaadi nahi karegi tumse,” she warned as she folded my clothes.
(If you keep behaving like this, no girl will marry you)
I widened my eyes in surprise. “Haww mom, at least don’t say something like this to your handsome son,” I replied, trying to lighten the mood as I sat up in front of her.
She rolled her eyes but continued with her tasks.
After folding my clothes, she brought me a plate of food.
“Why didn’t you have your lunch?” she asked, sitting across from me.
“I didn’t have an appetite,” I replied, heading to the bathroom to wash my hands.
“Eat your lunch, don’t skip your meals,” she advised, giving my head a gentle pat before leaving the room.
Even after eating, my headache lingered, a reminder of the emotional turmoil I was experiencing. I felt as if my head would explode with all the thoughts racing through it.
After finishing my meal, I sat at my desk and connected my computer. Usually, I played games at night, but today I needed to clear my head. Suddenly, my phone vibrated, showing an unknown number. I frowned but decided to answer it.
“Hello?” I said, expecting silence, but then I heard her voice.
A wave of calmness washed over me just from hearing her soft voice.
She asked me to meet her at the park, and I quickly made my way downstairs. After changing into a black t-shirt and combing my hair, I rushed out to see her waiting for me.
A smile broke on my face at the sight of her.
“Chalein?” she asked, her eyes sparkling.
(Shall we go?)
I smiled back, replying, “Chaliye,” and gestured for her to lead the way.
(Let’s go)
As we walked, I couldn’t help but admire her. She wore a light blue kurti and white pants, her hair tied in a bun, with a few strands falling gracefully over her forehead. I felt a strong urge to let her hairs open but held back, i shouldn’t invade her personal space.
My mind teased me, ‘Mr. Raichand if i functioned properly then it holds many memories where you already invaded her personal space’
And i tried to remember all the scenes where I and she were close to each other and I felt my ears tinting into a light pink shade.
Mustering the courage, I asked, “So, have you met your friend?”
She turned to me, her expression curious.
“Yes,” she replied, a hint of a smile playing on her lips.
“So he’s quite a special friend,” I murmured, continuing to walk ahead without realizing she had stopped in her tracks.
“Where are you going? We have to turn right” she called out, frowning at me.
“Oh, sorry. I didn’t realize… but wait, how did you know we have to go right?” I asked, as confusion spreads across me.
“Ah, I just guessed,” she said, quickening her pace.
Wierd.
My guesses never seem to be right.
“Oh, I remember. Do you know Varun?” she asked, and I nodded in response.
“He mentioned you,” she said while trying to secure her bun as her hair began to open.
I instinctively moved closer to help her, but I noticed her shoulders getting stiff.
“Really? What did he say about me?” I whispered in her ear, sensing her breath quicken.
“That…you are a nice guy,” she stammered, causing me to smirk at her flustered reaction.
“And what do you think about me? Am I a nice guy or….” I whispered again, but she gently pushed me away and walked ahead. I chuckled, finding her adorably awkward.
We took a lap around the park, and she shared more about Varun being her childhood friend. The way she talked about him stirred an uneasy feeling in my chest, but then I focused on her eyes. They didn’t reflect with some other feelings, instead, they reflected a bond built on trust and friendship.
I couldn’t help but smile, realizing that if she spoke so fondly of him, he must hold a special place in her life.
Suddenly, she exclaimed, “Oh no! I forgot to bring the curd!”
Taking my hand in her, she rushed to a nearby shop.
After she bought the curd, she turned to me with a bright smile. “Done! Let’s go.”
Don’t overthink it, Vihaan. Everything is fine.
“Ruh…”I said softly, and she turned to me, her eyes shining in the sunlight that peeked through the clouds.
“Bolo,” she replied, raising her eyebrows.
(Tell me)
I shook my head and said, “Kuch nahi.”
(Nothing)
She frowned for a moment but eventually nodded.
Her presence made me feel more at ease. I realized I had been overthinking everything instead of enjoying the moment with her. Time seemed to fly by when we were together.
We chatted all the way back home. My feelings for her deepened with each passing day.
She walked up to her gate, and I couldn’t resist the urge to pull her gently towards me. She gasped, a mixture of surprise and warmth washing over her as she relaxed, her hand finding my shoulder for balance.
“What the hell, Vihaan?” she slightly yelled, her voice a blend of irritation and something softer.
I smirked, teasingly said, “Ruh, if you miss me, just call out. You don’t need to pretend you don’t know the way…”
Her eyes widened, she thought I didn’t know but I had noticed her turning in every direction before me.
The pink shade makes its way towards her cheeks told me she was flustered, and I let my intrusive take over. I opened her hair clip, letting her hair cascade freely in the soft breeze, the moment feeling almost magical.
I drew her even closer, our bodies so close that there was hardly any space left between us. I tucked a strand of hair behind her ear, my fingers lingering on her cheek.
Leaning in, I whispered softly, “There are apps like Google Maps you can use…or…or… I wouldn’t mind being your personal map.”
I left her hand and passed a wink to which she rolled her eyes but couldn’t stop blushing.
She waved goodbye, and I responded, watching her until she entered. I then opened my own gate and headed straight upstairs.
Once in my room, I lay back on my bed, a soft smile plastered on my face as I closed my eyes.
Later, during dinner, I joined my family at the table.
Prisha di was glued to her phone, and I tried to peek at what she was doing, but she pulled it closer to her, glaring at me. I shrugged, guessing she was ordering makeup products without our mom knowing.
As we ate, I was finishing my last few bites when my mom suddenly said, “I remember something.”
She stood up, glaring at me again.
“Vihaan, I need to have a nice talk with you,” she announced, heading toward the kitchen.
I stopped mid-bite, feeling anxious at her words.
Dad and Prisha exchanged glances, and Dad remarked, “Her nice talk means a scolding,” taking a sip of his water.
“Kya kiya tune ab?” Prisha di asked, curiosity evident in her tone.
(What did you do now?)
“Pata nahi ab kya kiya maine,” I murmured, trying to remember my recent actions.
(I don’t know what I did this time)
I sat there, puzzled, as my mind raced to recall what I had done, but I couldn’t remember..
I just left everything to luck. When I entered my room, my mom was standing by the balcony.
“Mom…” I called out, and she turned to look at me. It was a tense moment for me. She asked me to come closer, and as I stood there with my head down, she handed me some bundles of sheets.
I held them and looked at her. She sighed and said, “These are 30 worksheets of Organic Chemistry… I need them completed by the day after tomorrow… your punishment.”
I widened my eyes in shock. No way did she know!
“Mom, please, give me less worksheets. I promise that the cup from your favorite crockery set broke on its own, I was just looking at it,” I said quickly, realizing her eyes were wide with surprise.
“What the hell, Vihaan, you were the one who broke that cup…” she dramatically sighed and pretended to cry.
“It was my favourite cup from my favourite crockery set” she said exaggerating ‘favorite’ word.
So, I wasn’t getting punished because of the cup?
No way did she know!
“Mom, please, just a few worksheets. I promise I’ll be careful with your sarees. The saree burned because the iron is defective, it’s not my fault,” I confessed, sitting in front of her and making innocent faces.
She gasped again dramatically.
“You were the one who burned my green saree” she said, acting even more dramatic.
Her love for her sarees and crockery was beyond anything, but wait-why was I getting punished? Because looking at her reaction she gots to know saare and cup right now.
Vihu, try to remember what the hell you did.
“Mom, why am I getting punished?” I asked, gathering my courage.
She rubbed her forehead, making faces like someone had broken her heart. Then she glared at me and said, “Because you are disturbing my class since you can’t see your beautiful and pretty view.”
I felt like the floor had swept beneath my feet.
No way she knows.
Vihaan, you are doomed.
I tried to reply, but my mom’s presence was too powerful, so I just zipped my lips.
She ruffled my hair and gave me a teasing smile, then smirked, “remember jis school me tum padhte ho us school ki me teacher hu”
(Remember, I am the teacher of the school you go to)
She turned to leave, and I sat silently in my chair. My mom knew.
That meant she knew I was staring at Ruh.
I facepalmed, hiding my face in my palms as blood rushed to my cheeks, I felt a ticklish sensation all over my body.
Suddenly, I jumped when the door creaked open.
My mom peeked in and said with a giggle, “Waise, I appreciate your choice.”
(By the way)
“Umm, Ruhanika is indeed very beautiful and pretty that no one can take their eyes off,” she winked at me and closed the door.
I went from shock to reality.
My mom liked Ruh too. She likes her which means one step clear..!!
I did a little victory dance in my chair, posing my hands like I was doing Bhangra, and rolled in my chair, only to fall out of it.
Thud.
I pouted, but a small giggle escaped my mouth as I thought about Ruh.
Then I slipped into my daydream about her, rolling and giggling, only to bump my head against the bed.
“Lag gyi yrr.”
(Ouch it hurts)

Morning arrived with a gentle breeze coming from my balcony. I woke up right at 5:00 am when my alarm rang.
I groaned a bit but remembered why I set the alarm. After ten minutes, I went to the balcony to see my Ruh.
I saw her standing there, eyes closed as the soft sunrise light touched her cheeks. I leaned on the balcony railing, completely lost in her.
I knew she always came to her balcony after waking up, so I decided to wake up early, even though I’m a night owl. I stayed up late to study and just to catch a glimpse of her I woke up early.
She didn’t see me since I was hiding behind the curtain.
For twenty minutes, she sat in a wooden chair, sipping her tea.
I don’t know why, but her love for chai is everything.
(Tea)
Once she finished her tea, she went back inside.
I pouted at her disappearing figure but eventually laid back in bed and drifted off, dreaming of my Ruh.

School was hectic. In the first three lectures, we studied math because the teacher took an extra class to finish the syllabus.
Pure dimag ka bharta bana dia, bhale baccho ko kuch smjh aaye ya naa aaye syllabus pura krwana hota hai.
(I got my brain fried, whether we students understood anything or not, the syllabus had to be completed in any way)
I rolled my eyes and then we had biology in the fourth lecture.
I didn’t get the seat I wanted because I overslept and arrived late.
The seat was already taken, and I couldn’t see her properly.
When recess started, I saw her heading downstairs to the mess area. I followed her down. She sat with Tanya and Vani, and it looked like she forgot her water bottle, so she went back to get it.
I noticed Yash and Sid giving each other glares. What was wrong with them? They were smirking at each other.
I took a seat at the bench for eight. Vani and Tanya sat together, and Yash and Sid were whispering. I wondered if I missed something. When did they become so close?
They gave me tight-lipped smiles, and I rolled my eyes.
I made a place for Ruh.
Yash was sitting on my left, and Sid was in the corner. And there is a seat left beside ms.
Soon, I saw Ruh coming but talking with Varun.
I clenched my fists under the table. They were both laughing together.
Varun asked, “May I join you?” Tanya replied, “of course.”
I saw Yash bang his hand under the table, his fist clenched.
Was there some kind of telepathy between us?
His eyes were glaring at Varun, who was smiling and chatting with Tanya.
When Ruh came over, she paused because the teacher started talking to her.
Varun and I both said, “Come and sit.”
We exchanged smiles, but I wasn’t feeling good inside and chose to focus on Ruh.
She hesitated and said, “Sid, shift inside. I’ll sit beside you, I’m feeling nauseous, and the window is there so I’ll feel good”
I sighed as she shifted beside Sid.
Varun and I glared at Sid, and I heard him muttering, “Aisi situation me apne aap kaise aa jata hu.”
(How do I end up in situations like this?)
I rolled my eyes at his antics.
I saw Tanya start a conversation with Varun, and he revealed that he’s a childhood friend of Ruh.
I was mentally making faces at how they were chatting.
It seemed like I wasn’t the only one bothered.
Varun and Tanya whisper to each other and giggling to lame jokes.
Yash’s fist was clenched, and he hit my knee.
“What the heck?” I yelled as I groaned in pain closing my eyes tightly, the spoon fell from my hand, glaring at him.
He whispered, “Sorry,” but when I looked at him, he just made an innocent face while everyone was watching us.
“Please continue,” I whispered, embarrassed.
I noticed Sid whispering something to Ruh, and suddenly she started coughing.
I handed her my water bottle, and Varun did the same.
She looked at us, hesitantly saying, “Thank you,” but then showed us her own water bottle as she drank from it.
She was behaving strangely.
I saw Varun say something to Tanya, and she quickly stood up, leaving Varun sitting in front of Ruh.
I clenched the juice package resting on the table as I watched them both talking to each other as Varun leaned in to say something Ruh and she laughed at him. I didn’t like this sight at all. In my frustration, I squeezed the juice package too hard, and it broke, spilling juice all over Siddharth.
“What the hell, Vihaan?” he yelled, gaining everyone’s attention.
I realized the blunder I had made.
“Sorry,” I said, trying to wipe juice off his shirt and face.
My mind wasn’t working properly.
The hell with you Vihaan.
Vani stepped in between and dangerously glared at me like i have done some crime. I shivered at her dangerous gaze, but it softened as she turned to Sid and gently wiped Siddharth’s face and shirt with her handkerchief. He tried to move, but she glared at him, making him stay still.
“Kya jo main dekh raha hoon woh tu bhi dekh raha hai?” Yash whispered behind me.
(Am I the only one seeing this or you also?)
I nodded.
“Apna Sid to gaya,” he said, and I muffled a laugh.
(Sid is done for)
