Yash turned to Sid as he noticed Vihaan rushing in with his bag hanging over his shoulder.

“Tu kuch samjha, Sid?” Yash asked with a smirk.

(Did you understand something, Sid?)

His devilish smirk indicated he understood something.

“Hnn,” Sid replied, looking confused.

“What do you understand?” Yash frowned and asked.

“That our Vihaan stayed up all night writing notes for a girl,” Siddharth replied shrugging his shoulders.

Yash facepalmed himself.

“Tu kuch nahi samjha,” Yash said, patting Sid’s shoulder.

(You didn’t understand anything.)

Sid looked at Yash, waiting for an answer.

Suddenly, he yelled, “I got it!”

Yash clapped his hands and said, “Finally, your brain is back from vacation.”

“That’s the point. He did this just for her, she is the one” Yash said excitedly.

“So you mean to say the girl is… Ruhiii… our Ruhii!” Sid exclaimed, covering his mouth in shock and catching everyone’s attention. His eyes widened.

Yash glanced at his classmates sitting in the front and waved his hands, signaling that everything was fine.

“Our Vihuu and Ruhii… what a joke of the century” Sid said, not believing Yash’s theory.

“Yes, Ruhii! Think about it carefully. Vihaan was never a guy who interact with girls, but he was always soft toward her. Remember that bus incident? He deliberately asked you to change seats. Then at night, I saw him close to Ruhii. I didn’t mean to spy, but I saw him gently wiping drops from her forehead. At that moment, I noticed a different side of Vihaan. And remember that talk by the campfire? He mentioned a girl he has feelings for but was confused… I’m a hundred, no….no… a thousand percent sure Ruhanika is the girl. I noticed during the campfire that his gaze was always on her. He thinks I wouldn’t notice, but I’m his best friend. If I don’t notice these things, then who will?” Yash explained to the clueless Sid.

Meanwhile, Sid was trying to process everything he heard but eventually shook his head.

“Still it’s hard to believe,” Sid said while putting his head back on the chair.

“I’m serious, Sid. Believe me,” Yash tried to make him understand.

“If this is serious, then fish can fly,” Sid replied sarcastically.

“Want to bet?” Yash said, smiling and extending his hand to Siddharth, who thought for a moment and then nodded, clapping his hands.

“Deal..!!”

“If I win, you will write all my practical files of all subjects and treat me for a week-no, for two weeks,” Yash said, smirking.

“Done… but if I win, you will treat me for a month,” Sid said, and Yash’s eyes widened at the opportunity that Sid grabbed.

But Yash was confident enough he could win the bet.

They both are praying internally not to lose until they heard a tap on the desk.

They saw Vani standing there with some books in her hands.

“What do you want?” Yash asked in his usual tone, while she rolled her eyes.

“Siddharth,” she muttered under her breath, only audible for herself to hear.

“What?,i didn’t hear you” Yash asked, frowning.

“I need help with some topics, so get out and sit in my place,” Vani said nonchalantly.

“I can help you too….so which topic do you want to understand,” Yash smirked at her only to irritate her.

“Fluid mechanics,” she said through gritted teeth, forcing a smile while glaring at Yash.

Yash chuckled, “Oh, Fluid mechanics…..jaa rha hu me,” he said in the last line seriously as he grabbed his bag.

(I am going)

“Huh, pehle bolna chahiye tha, ye aise indirectly beizzati kon karta hai,” Yash muttered, rolling his eyes, while Vani glared at him.

(You should have said it earlier; who embarrasses someone indirectly like this?)

“Ullu kahi ka,” she said, turning to Sid, who was watching the scene unfold like it was an action movie.

(Such an owl he is)

Vani turned and her expression changed to a smile, like blooming flowers. She quickly sat down and shifted closer to Siddharth.

“Umm, can you please explain these few topics to me?” she asked sweetly, the nicest tone anyone had ever heard.

Sid was too clueless to respond.

“You could also ask Ruhii or Vihaan,” he suggested.

“Umm, but what if I say I want you… I mean, they both are gone, so you’re my only option,” she added, coughing at the end, and Sid frowned at her words.

“But why me?” he asked.

“Offo, ab ye KBC ki baatein hatao aur mujhe par dhyan do… I mean, mujhe ye topics samjha do… please,” she said, holding his hand with both of hers.

(Oh, now stop all this KBC quiz and focus on me…I mean, explain these topics to me…please)

Sid shivered at her touch and pulled his hand back.

“Fine,” he said, trying to find his glasses case.

He took out his glasses, adjusted them carefully, and opened the book.

All the while, Vani was just gazing at him. A spark ignited in her heart at the sight of him adjusting his glasses.

“You look good in glasses, why don’t you wear them often?” she asked.

“I wear them whenever I have to study,” he replied, opening his notes.

‘I don’t think I have ever seen a guy who looked that much hot in glasses’, Vani internally thought as the sight or to be precisely th guy in front of her making her feel different things.

He started explaining topics to her, and Vani rested her left elbow on the desk, propping her cheek in her palm, admiring him.

She didn’t quite understand the feelings stirring within her but enjoyed his presence.

On the other side, Yash said, “Move,” and Tanya rolled her eyes, shifting aside.

But her stomach betrayed her, feeling butterflies when he sat next to her.

She used to talk a lot, but for the last three weeks, she tried to speak less, fearing she might blurt out her feelings. She attempted to write him a letter but couldn’t bring herself to give it, maybe she is afraid of his rejection or that their friendship was more important than her feelings.

She rested her head on the table, and Yash did the same. When he looked at her, her heart raced.

“Why are you copying me?” she asked.

“I didn’t,” Yash said, shrugging his shoulders, a pout forming on his face.

They both fell silent. They had been together since kindergarten, and even their classmates whispered about them fighting, but only they knew they had never fought. Yet, they had unintentionally created a distance between them.

Soon the bell rang, and students rushed out into the thin air.

“Yash…” Tanya began but stood up to grab her bag as school was letting out, leaving just the two of them in the classroom.

But he held her hand. “Tanya, what is your problem?” Yash finally said, expressing what he felt over the past three weeks while Tanya tried everything to avoid him.

“Nothing is my problem,” she replied.

“I’m your best friend, Tanya. I’ve been with you since childhood. If I can’t understand your problem, who will?” Yash said, sensing something was definitely off with her. He wanted to give her space, but he couldn’t stand seeing her lost in thought. She hadn’t talked to him as much as before.

“You’re right, you will always remain my best friend,” she said, not realizing the shattered sound of her heart which was breaking.

She understood she could never confess to him and would always stand back because she was his best friend. She decided to bury her feelings and never tell him because their friendship is more precious than her one sided love.

I felt nervous.
Meeting him after so many years felt nice. I remembered when I first met Varun.

I wanted to ask him how he had been all these years, if everything was alright, and how his family was.

But then the bell rang.

He just smiled at me and said, “Meet me after school, I will be waiting for you at the school gate.”

I nodded.

This moment meant a lot. He had always been my supporter and best friend-the first person to talk to me. I chuckled thinking about our childhood encounter.

I had moved to Mumbai in second grade, and I was upset with my parents for leaving Delhi.

I was nervous on my first day, sitting alone during lunch because no one talked to me. Maybe they thought I am some kind of alien.

For three months, I sat alone.

Then one day, everything changed. I tripped as the bell rang, and kids rushed into the school.

I fell hard because someone accidentally pushed me, and tears streamed down my face with my knees bleeding.

Suddenly, a boy came over and wrapped his handkerchief around my knee.

He helped me up, but I felt embarrassed, and my cheeks turned red. I couldn’t stop crying.

“Shh, aise nahi rote,” he said, sitting on the ground with me in a rough tone.

(Shh, don’t cry like this)

“Toh kaise rote hain?” I replied, sniffling.

(Then how should I cry?)

He laughed, and I thought he was making fun of me, so I cried even harder.

“Offo, ab mat ro itna, bandariya lag rahi ho,” he said, helping me stand up.

(Oh no, don’t cry so much, you look like a monkey.)

“Tumko main bandariya lagti hu?” I asked, still sniffling.

(Do you think I look like a monkey?)

He nodded. And i frowned looking at him.

“Do choti waali pyaari bandariya,” he said, and I laughed.

(A cute two braided little monkey.)

He took me to the medical room and then left.

I searched for him for three days, but he didn’t show up.

Finally, he found me in the school garden and said, “Let’s eat lunch together.”

I saw his ID card and noticed he was in third grade.

From that day, we started hanging out together. Everything was going well, and I had finally found a friend.

But then, two years later, his father got a sudden transfer, and he had to leave. I didn’t even get to say goodbye.

Seeing him after all these years felt like I had finally found my friend again.

“Hii”, he said rubbing his back of neck.

“Hello,” i replied feeling a little bit awkward as I don’t know how to talk with someone when you met after such a long time.

We talked all the way to my home.

I don’t know what I felt, but he shared everything that’s been on his mind. It felt really good.

“Let’s go inside, mummy and papa aren home today. They will be happy to meet you,” I said, smiling at him. He smiled back a little.

“Ruhii, thank you for inviting me, but I’ll come some other time. I literally got 20 missed calls from my mother,” he replied.

“Oh, okay,” I said, waving goodbye as I opened the gate to my house.

“Ahh, Ruhii…” he started to say.

“Yes?” I looked at him, noticing he seemed nervous.

“I was saying, if you’re free on the weekend, we can meet,” he said shyly.

I smiled and replied, “Umm, this week I have to submit projects, so next weekend will be fine. Are you okay with that?”

“Yes” he exclaimed, a bit too loudly, then quickly closed his eyes, realizing his tone.

We both looked at each other and burst out laughing.

“I’ll see you in school tomorrow,” he said, and I waved back, “Bye”

I watched him walk away until he turned down another lane.

My gaze then drifted to Vihaan’s balcony. I don’t know why, but I always check his balcony when I’m outside.

I shook my head at my silly antics.

When I entered my house, I saw everyone having lunch. I quickly changed my clothes and joined them at the table.

Later, after studying, I didn’t feel like sleeping.

“Ruhii,” my mom called, and I walked over to her.

“Kya hua, mumma?” I asked while hugging her from behind.

(What happened mumma)

“Go for an evening walk,” she said, chopping onions.

“Hainn, but why?” I questioned.

“It’s good exercise, and it’s not sunny out. Just go to the colony park, it will help refresh your mind,” she suggested.

“I don’t want to go,” I mumbled, still hugging her.

“Ruhii,” she said firmly, and that was enough for me to run off.

I quickly grabbed a hair clip and made a bun. Just as I was about to open the door, my mom handed me some money.

“Dahi lekar aana,” she instructed.

(Bring some curd)

“Ohh, this is why you’re sending me for a walk,” I fake-glared at her. She shrugged.

“Kunal isn’t home, and I need fresh curd and there is dairy to the next lane of colony park, so I thought you could get it on your walk. Simple.”

I rolled my eyes but nodded as I opened the gate.

I looked at his balcony again, but he wasn’t there.

Where is he?

I hadn’t seen him for five hours.

‘Five hours- Noted’, my brain teased me.

Yes freaking Five hours.

What’s wrong with you, Ruhanika? This isn’t like you.
But I can’t control that erupting feelings inside me.

I waited for him to come to the balcony for ten minutes like a lovesick girl. He usually shows up at this time, but he doesn’t.

I tapped my foot in impatience.

“Kaha hai ye idiot mr. Chimpanzee, waise to Chamgadar ki tarah latka rehta hai balcony me, aur aaj jab mujhe dekhna hai use, toh pata nhi kaha tortoise ki tarah shell me chup gaya,” I muttered in a bit of frustration as I was getting annoyed with my building.

(Where is that idiot Mr. Chimpanzee, hanging out on the balcony like a bat usually does, and now when I want to see him, he’s hiding in his shell like a tortoise)

I got frustrated and not knowing why, I took out my phone and found his number from our school group.

We hadn’t talked on the phone before, and I hesitated, wondering if I should call. Why am I being so impatient?

My impatient soul doesn’t let me have patience, in frustration I closed my eyes and didn’t realize when I accidentally pressed the call button until I heard the voice which can make my heart go insane.

“Hello…?” he said on the other end, making my heart race.

I bit my lip in nervousness and whispered slowly, “It’s me, Ruhanika.”

He didn’t respond at first, but then I heard opening the gate as I saw him come to his balcony. He frowned at me, and I just shrugged, nervous.

The words slipped out automatically, “Will you come downstairs?”

As soon as I said that, he turned and closed the gate to his balcony.

A minute later, he came outside.

He rushed up to me, asking, “What happened, Ruh? Are you okay? Is there a problem? Did you get hurt?” He held my hands, checking for any injuries.

“Relax, Vihaan, I’m fine…” I said, taking a deep breath.

“You called me suddenly, and I got nervous, thinking something happened,” he said, rubbing the back of his neck.

“By the way, what did you call me for?” he asked, looking concerned.

I felt nervous about how to answer.

Then I blurted out, “I have to go to the colony park, but I don’t know the way.”

Actually, I did know the way.

‘Yep, actually our Ruhii just wants to spend time with him’, my brain chimed in between.

And i ignored my brain comments, I too want to reply back but can’t, as right now the person who is standing in front of me is making it difficult to concentrate on any other thing.

He looked confused. I continued,

“So, if you’re not busy, you can show me the way, and…..you know….like we…we…you and me….can go…together,” I said while fidgeting my fingers as I thought he would deny because he is busy maybe.

“I’m not busy for you… just wait a minute, I’ll change my t-shirt,” he said and dashed back into his house.

Wait.
He actually agreed.

I jumped in happiness and clapped my hands but soon I realised my surroundings and quickly composed myself, but couldn’t stop giggling.
