I walked into the classroom and immediately noticed Yash and Siddharth staring at me.

What now? I took my seat.

“When did you start writing double notes?” Yash asked, looking confused.

“What do you mean?” I opened my books.

“This?” Siddharth said, handing me my notebook.

I was writing notes for Ruhanika. I had given her half the notes the day I met her and was now finishing the other half.

“Meri marzi,” I said, pulling my notes back.

(My choice)

“At least let me see,” Siddharth said, trying to grab them.

“No, you can’t,” I replied, pulling them away.

“I’m not going to eat them, I just want to take a look,” he insisted.

I held his hand.

“Don’t touch it. I stayed up all night for writing this for Ruh-anika,” I said, looking at him while dusting the fake dust from notes although it was clean.

Suddenly, I realized what blunder I did and panicked.

Yash and Siddharth both looked at me with surprise.

While I feel trapped between this Viva session.

“You never wrote notes for us before, but you wrote them for Ruhanika?” Yash asked, raising an eyebrow.

I bit my inner cheek.

“I thought she was your rival,” Siddharth added.

Gosh, they were acting like I had done something wrong.

“Actually, I went to see her because she was really sick. As her fellow neighbor, classmate, kind and handsome rival, I thought it was nice to help her. It wouldnโ€™t be fair for her to miss out on notes and then she has an excuse for not doing well…..I believe in fair competition,” I explained, feeling proud of my excuse.

‘As if that will work,’ my brain mocked.

Why does my brain always insult me? I mentally rolled my eyes at my brain.

“Hmm, when did you become so nice?” Siddharth asked.

“I don’t know why I can’t digest your excuse,” Yash said, leaning forward.

I forced a smile and said, “Have digestive pills, they’ll help you in digestion” and he rolled his eyes.

“Whatever you say”, Yash spoke while glaring at me.

Control Vihaan Control.
I should not make it so obvious.

I shook my head and glanced at Ruh, but her seat was empty, i frowned as I only saw Tanya and Vani sitting and talking with each other.

Where is she?

I had met her in the corridor.
She was coming back.

What was taking her so long?

I hope she is okay.

I stood up to go and check on Ruh, but then my mom walked into the classroom, and I saw Ruh entering behind her.

She had a smile on her face as she sat down.

An instant smile appeared on my face, and I sat back down, happy to see her.

I had deliberately chosen this place as my seat so I could glance at her clearly.

And trust me the view from my seat is mesmerizing that I literally forget to blink my eyes.

She is sitting by the window, and her baby hairs fell on her forehead while she focused on the blackboard.

Is the blackboard more interesting than me?

‘Sharm kar le bhai thoda sa, your mom is teaching. Kuch toh sharm, lihaaz kar, aur usko ghoorna band kar, youโ€™re looking like a creep,’ my brain reminds me.

(Have some shame, your mom is teaching. Show some respect and stop staring at her)

I mentally scoff at my brain.

I snapped back to reality, looking at the board. I noticed my mom was teaching a topic I had already studied.

Good job, Vihaan.

Now I could look at her again.

But then Tanya blocked my view.
I tried to see her but my failed attempts made me irritated.

Frustrated, I stood up and yelled, “Tanya, please move! You’re blocking my view”

As soon as I said that, I realized how silly it was.

To hell with you Vihaan. Why did you always embarass yourself.
Right now I want this floor to swallow me.
Gosh this is so embarrassing.

From my corner of eyes I saw Ruh is also looking at me but I felt so shy and embarrassed that I couldn’t glance at her.

I noticed Yash and Siddharth looking at me confused.

My mom glared at me.

Why in the world, my mom have to be my teacher?

“What happened, Mr. Vihaan?” she asked, arms crossed, putting the book down.

I lowered my gaze, embarrassed.

“Actually, I couldn’t see the board,” I replied, trying to explain while she still looked angry.

“Tanya is sitting in the corner row, and you’re in the middle row. The board is in the middle of the wall. How can Tanya block your view?” she asked, and now everyone was staring at me.

I coughed and tried to come up with an excuse.

“Oh no, did I say Tanya? No…No….I wasn’t talking about Tanya! I meant Tanisha,” I said nervously chuckling.

“I don’t think she’s causing trouble or blocking your view,” my mom said, looking at me sternly.

“Sorry, Mo-… Ma’am,” I mumbled.

“Vihaan, if I catch you disturbing my class again, I’ll throw you out of my class,” Mom warned and returned to teaching.

I sighed and sat back down.

Yash and Siddharth were quietly laughing, and I shot them a death glare.

‘What a way to embarrass yourself in front of your crush,’ my brain mocked me, and I pouted.

I felt like such an idiot.

But it wasnโ€™t my fault.

I lost my senses whenever I saw my Ruh.

And why did my mom have to scold me in front of Ruh?

What was she thinking about me?

I glanced at her, and our eyes met. Her hazel brown eyes looked at me with curiosity, she raised an eyebrow asking ‘what happened’ but I just froze, her eyes are so captivating that I felt like some force was actually pulling me towards her, I soon realised the situation and just shook my head in No.

She nodded and turned back to the board.

Why did it feel like this had happened before?

Never mind.
Focus on the board, Vihaan.

If my mom catches me again, Iโ€™m in big trouble.

The chemistry lecture had just ended, and I quickly closed my book.

Our next class is Biology, and the teacher is going to teach plant physiology.

Honestly, I could feel myself dozing off just thinking about it.

Miss Shreya walked into the classroom, and as soon as she told us to open our books, I felt my eyelids getting heavy.

“Do you want to skip the class?” Yash whispered to me.

Sid raised his hand and said, “Iโ€™m ready”

“You?”, they both asked me.

“If I want I still can’t skip her class, last time when I bunked her class she told my mom, and then my mom punished me by giving 20 worksheets of organic chemistry….for the whole week those structures were haunting me in my dream…that was traumatizing” I shivered remembering the moment and these both clowns laughed at me.

“But Miss Khadoos will never let us leave the class,” Yash murmured. She is really strict.

(Grumpy)

“Listen, Sid, hereโ€™s the plan, you need to act like youโ€™re sick. Iโ€™ll go up to maโ€™am and ask for permission to take you to the medical room. From there, we will sneak out to the back of the school and enjoy a calm, peaceful sleep under the shade of the tree,” Yash said, his eyes closed as he imagined the scene, a blissful smile spreading across his face.

I couldn’t help but laugh at his plan.

“But let me add a twist to the plan. While you both are bunking class, PE sir will be making his rounds. During his usual check, and you know how he just needs an excuse to call his fiancรฉe and gets distracted easily. So, heโ€™ll walk toward the back side of school, as he thinks there is no one…..then he spots you both…..,”I said, smirking at the thought.

“Trust me, the moment heโ€™ll see you, he will immediately punish you both by making you run 20 laps around the field. Just imagine the look on your face when that happens,” I added, enjoying the mental picture of Sidโ€™s and Yash’s reaction to the whole scenario.

“Tere se hamari Khushi bardasht nhi hoti na,” Yash said while glaring at me and i shook my head.

(Our happiness is unbearable for you, isn’t it?)

I glanced at Ruh, who was totally focused on her book. I put my palm under my chin and elbow on the table and started admiring her.

I got lost in my thoughts about Ruh until I felt someone shaking me.

Gadhe, maโ€™am is calling your name” Yash said, snapping me back to reality. I stood up quickly.

“Vihaan, PE sir is calling you,” she said, then returned to her teaching.

I exchanged amused looks with Yash and Sid, who both looked at me as if I betrayed them. And why not I didn’t need any plane to skip the class.

But I’ll miss my Ruh.

Gosh vihaan stop. I am just going to the ground.

They both mouthed me some colourful curses to which I reciprocated.

Finally, I left the class. I asked the peon uncle, and he told me that sir was at the basketball court. Nodding, I headed there.

When I arrived, I saw sir talking to someone.

“Sir, you called me?” I asked, not paying attention to the person standing next to him.

“Yes, I want you to join our team for the match next month,” he said, jotting something down in his notebook.

I frowned, “But I thought the match was canceled?”

“Not anymore….We have to win the trophy and have a big party full night,” I heard a familiar voice say.

I turned around, and a huge smile spread across my face.

“Varun,” I exclaimed, rushing to hug him.

He embraced me back and patted my shoulder.

“How are you? Howโ€™s your injury? What did the doctor say?…..,” I bombarded him with questions.

“Relax, relax! Iโ€™m totally fine. The doctor said my injury is healed, I just need a follow-up check-up,” he replied, making me feel relieved.

Sir cleared his throat.

“I hope the reunion is over. Varun is completely healed, so we can start practicing the day after tomorrow for the annual match.”

With that, he went for a round.

“How have you been?” I asked Varun, looking at him.

“To be honest, even this polluted air feels nice. Iโ€™ve been in the hospital for four months because of my injury. The hospital walls started haunting me, and i even lost my smelling sense, all I could smell was medicine,” he said, laughing. I chuckled at his reaction.

“But when are you joining back to school?” I asked.

“Umm, tomorrow. I just came to fill out my admit card form,” he said, showing me the form. I nodded.

“Can you believe itโ€™s my last year of school? And i come back here for a last few months and I didn’t enjoyed my final year,” he sulked, looking like a kid.

“Don’t worry, you just make sure you enjoy every second of your last month’s in school”

“Varun, Iโ€™m just happy youโ€™re fine now”, I said patting his shoulder.

“Life is very unpredictable right, I never admitted to a hospital before but see in just a moment of seconds, I fell and got injured during the last match because of myย foolishness and had to spend my four months seeing those haunting walls,” he said while a sad smile plastered on his face.

As we walked, we both sat down on a bench.

During the last match, we were playing football, and the other team was about to win while we were losing. Varun tried to score, but the other team member was cheating. I came in to stop that player, but that player accidentally hit him, causing him to lose his balance and get injured.

“But I learned one thing- life always gives a second chance, so always grab it before it slips away. After much struggle, my life has finally given me a second chance, and I wonโ€™t let it go to waste…….especially when it comes to someone special,” he said while muttering the last sentence under his breath which i couldn’t hear and a calm smile appeared on his face.

“What do you mean?” I asked confusingly.

“Forget everything I said and focus on the upcoming match,” he said shrugging his shoulders.

“I was enjoying my temporary role as sports captain,” I joked to lighten the mood, and he laughed.

Then he stood up and rolled the paper he was holding.

“You took my place for a while, but now Iโ€™m back to take back whatโ€™s mine,” he said, winking at me.

I laughed, “Yes, yes, youโ€™ll get your sports captain badge back”

“Good, Now go attend your class,” he said, and I sulked.

He sat back on the bench.

“Arenโ€™t you going home? You have filledย  the form,” I asked, raising an eyebrow.

He scratched the back of his head and said, “Ahh, I need to wait for someone”

His eyes sparkled, and his ears turned a light shade of pink.

“Yeah, yeah, I can tell that someone is special just by looking at your face,” I teased, and he coughed in surprise.

I chuckled at his reaction.

“Vihannn,” he said, glaring at me.

“Sorry, senior,” I chuckled and ran off.

Thatโ€™s just how he wasโ€”always treating me like a good friend and a little brother. We both know each other since last two years. When he joined as sports captain and he teach me how to play football. He has always been the best senior to me.

I came back to class just as the bell rang and rushed in.

I saw Ruh coming out, lost in her book.

I remembered our first meeting, I abruptly stopped a little distance away to avoid bumping into her.

She quickly raised her book to her face, stumbling, but I caught her hand.

“Aise kon krta hai,” she said, placing her hands on her heart and breathing heavily.

(Who does that?)

I smiled, seeing the same confused and afraid look in her hazel brown eyes.

“Kaha kho gye?” she asked, waving her hands in front of me.

(Where are you lost?)

She was still looking at me with same emotions when we met for first time. The same confusion and a little anger lingered in her hazel brown eyes. But this time her eyes held another emotion.

“Apki ankhon me,” I replied, winking at her and I can see her face flushed.

(In your eyes)

Aww I like her so much. The way she tried to control her blush made her look so cute that I wanted to pinch her cheeks.

“Shut up and move, I need to go,” she said, pushing ahead.

“Where are you going?” I asked.

“To the library. I need some books and have to solve maths worksheet. The English teacher is absent, so the substituted teacher allowed me to go,” she replied.

Ohh!

“Just wait for me on the stairs,” I said and dashed into my classroom.

I quickly packed my bag.

“Where are you going?” Yash asked, frowning.

“To the library, bye” I said and rushed off.

As I just moved ahead a little bit, I turned back to my friends and announced, “Varun is back,” My friends bombarded me with questions about his health, I told them about his health and quickly made my way to the library.

I saw Ruh waiting for me.

Haaye!

We walked together, and she took the last corner seat in the last row. I understood that she liked being alone.

She sat and started studying.

I remembered something and took notes from my bag and gave her.

She looked at me in confusion, “the other half notes” i said slowly.

She gave me a warm smile , and seeing her smile brought a sense of peace to my heart. It was as if all my worries faded away.

And she whispered slowly, “Thank you.”

Since I don’t want to disturb her, I opened my book for revision.

“One more thing, I won’t be able to go home with you today,” she said, catching my attention.

“Why… why?” I yelled in shock.

She held my hand and made me sit down, placing her finger on her lips.

“Shhhh, Vihaan, we are in the library, do have some sort of speaker fixed in your throat, always yelling” she reminded me, but my focus was on her hand holding mine.

I don’t know why but I felt shy around her. It was a different feeling when she held my hand, her hands fit perfectly. I didn’t realize I was staring until she pulled away.

“Sorry,” she said, withdrawing her hand.

Why did she have to remove her hand? I felt like a part of me was gone.

‘Because your creepy stare makes her uncomfortable,’ my brain again poked its nose.

But my brain is right. Just calm down and freaking control yourself, if you don’t want to embarass yourself again infront of her.

I sulked until I heard her soft voice, “Vihaan.”

I was so lost in my delusional world that I didn’t know what was happening around me until she hit my shoulder.

Ouch! From where her small hands get so much strength.

“Where are you lost? I am talking to you…?” she said, frowning a bit, looking adorably angry like an angry bird.

“Yes…”

“I want to say I met my childhood friend today, and we decided to go together, so I’ll be going with him,” she said.

I nodded, but inside, I was worried.

She sighed and went back to her book.

Wait, she said “him.”
She said- him.
Him.
That meant she is meeting a boy.

I felt something in my heart and started shaking my legs. My mind was racing with thoughts about why she was meeting a boy.

Come on, Vihaan, she told you he is her childhood friend.

“Is that friend special to you… just curious,” I asked playfully not wanting her to think that I am invading her privacy.

She looked at me, then back at her book.

“Very special,” she said with a smile.

For the first time, I saw her smile while talking about someone, and that someone is a boy.

I don’t know why I am not getting a good feeling.
