It’s been a hectic day.

I really didn’t want to be here, but I had no choice. I just finished my notes, although half of them are still left.

While I was walking, I heard someone calling my name.

“Vani Mehta.”

I turned around and saw that it was my class teacher.

“Yes, ma’am?” I asked.

“Vani, this is a form for the MKIQ competition, which will be held in Lucknow next week. I thought you might want to join. If you’re interested, you can fill out the form and submit it to me by tomorrow morning. It’s not compulsory; it’s just an extracurricular activity,” she said, handing me the form.

I looked at the form and decided to throw it away because I definitely wasn’t planning on filling it out.

But then I saw Karan Bhaiya.

What was he doing here?

“Karan Bhaiya, what are you doing here?” I asked.

“Vani, your father sent me. He was tensed for you and we can’t leave you here alone,” he said as he showed me the way to the car.

How could I forget about my dad?

Well, Karan Bhaiya is my bodyguard, appointed by my dad for my protection.

My dad, being overprotective, insisted on it.

I got into the car and noticed my dad was already sitting inside.

“So, how was your first day?” he asked.

“It was okay,” I replied, looking straight ahead.

“Umeed hai aap yaha ache se settle ho jayengi aur hamre liye koi nayi musibat nhi khadi krengi,” he said while replying to his emails.

(Hmm, Vani, I hope you’ll settle in well here and won’t cause any problems for me)

“But I didn’t do anything,” I retorted.

“You know better than I do why you were transferred here. I expect you to control your temper and not cause any more trouble for us,” he replied without looking at me.

He’s still stuck up on this.

My previous school incident, I tried to control my anger, but the situation had turned out of control, and because of me, Dad lost three business deals but he didn’t say anything to me.

“What is this?” Dad asked, pointing at the form.

“Nothing, just a competition entry form,” I replied.

“Oh, then fill it out,” he said.

“I can’t even solve questions in minutes, and for this, I’ll have to solve them in seconds. Let it be, this is not my cup of tea,” I replied, shaking my head.

“Koshish to kariye, aapne toh pehle hi haar maan li. Abhi raaste par chalna toh shuru kijiye. Mehnat karne walon ko manzil hamesha khubsurat milti hai.” he said, caressing my head before walking out of the car.

(At least try, you’ve already given up before starting. Start walking on the path now. Those who work hard always find a beautiful destination)

I watched as he headed to his office, and Karan Bhaiya started driving us back home. Soon, we reached home. I threw myself on my comfy bed, took a nap, and woke up. My eyes fell on the form.

Try krne me kya Jaa rha hai.

(What harm is there in trying?)

I ended up filling out the form and submitting it the next day. We got three days off because our school was organizing the event.

I had three days to prepare, which wasn’t much time, but I just needed to catch up on a bit of the competition pattern.

“Karan Bhaiya, I need to go to the library. Will you please drop me?” I asked him.

“Okay.”

We reached the library in a few minutes, but there was a crowd.

“What happened, Bhaiya?”

“Ahh, nothing. You know, there have been a lot of thefts happening around here. Someone’s house was just robbed, the thief usually attacked from behind with a rod.”

I nodded and entered the library. I walked up to the shelves and started searching for the books I needed.

After half an hour, I found three books, but one was still missing, and it was really important to me.

I walked to the last section of the library, hoping to find it there. They usually keep books that are a bit torn or in bad condition here, so maybe, if I’m lucky, this book could at least help me with fifty percent of what I need.

I decided to search, but I heard someone walking toward me. I could hear the footsteps getting faster. I got scared, remembering what Karan Bhaiya had said.

What if it’s a thief who came here to steal and kill me?

No, Vani, remember what Karan Bhaiya taught you about how to act in these situations.

Vani, just turn and kick.

Yes! You can do it…I saw the shadow getting closer to me, and I did what I planned.

I turned and kicked hard between his legs.

“Ahhhhhhh,” he groaned in pain.

I looked at him and realized he was just a random boy, probably around my age.

Oops!! galat insan par self defense use Kia.

(Oops, wrong person to use self-defense)

“Ahh, are you okay?” I asked, trying to help him sit down.

He glared at me.

His dark black orbs had a certain magic that could hypnotize anyone.

“Oh, I understand you’re not okay, but what could I do? I thought you were a thief, so I acted accordingly. But it’s your fault too-if you come at someone like a thief, anyone would react the same way,” I said, to which he glared at me again.

“Thik hai, aise ghuro mat. I apologize,” I said, and he stood up and started to leave again.

(Okay, don’t stare at me like that. I apologize)

“Hey, at least accept my apology.”

“Okay, Miss Vani, I accept your apology, but please stay at a distance now. What if I leave it here in two pieces?” he said, and I nodded.

But wait-how did he know my name?

“How did you know my name? Haww, were you stalking me? But I don’t think we’ve met before,” I said bluntly.

“Seriously?” he said.

“You don’t know me?” he continued, and I shook my head.

“I’m your classmate,” he said.

“You’re my classmate? When did that happen?”

“Three days ago,” he replied with a tight smile.

“Oh, actually, I never noticed,…..but from now on, I will,” I replied with a smile and murmured last sentence under my breath.

He shook his head and turned to leave.

But I realized something and asked him, “Suno, I need to ask something.”

(Listen, I need to ask something)

“Ask,” he replied, frustrated.

“But it’s a very personal question,” I said.

“Then don’t ask.”

He started walking away again, but I stepped in front of him and asked, “I know I shouldn’t ask this, it’s a very personal question but will you be able to have kids in the future, because I did kick you pretty hard down there.”

He looked shocked and stared at me for a few seconds, so I waved my hand in front of his face.

“Tum na, dur raho mujhse aur mere future baccho se,” he said, handing me my Library card while adding, “It did fall from your bag.”

Within seconds, he was gone.

(You know what, stay away from me and my future kids)

Ab toh dur rehna muskil hai.

(Now, staying away is going to be difficult)

Lately, I’ve been feeling really bored. I studied for the quiz event, but how much more can I study? Even studying has become boring for me. Sid and Yash can’t come over because they didn’t participate in the quiz and are busy studying.

I walked up to my balcony to get some fresh air and see what was happening outside my house.

‘It’s only you and me, Vihaan. Tell the truth, you’re here to see someone special,’ my brain teased.

Idiot.

‘I was just here to get some fresh air,’ I replied.

‘Hnn, Delhi mein fresh air? Yeah, right. Take a deep breath,’ my brain mocked me again.

Okay, fine. I’m here to see Ruh.

I couldn’t go to school yesterday because I was kind of sick.

And can you believe it? I haven’t seen Ruh for 36 hours. Gosh, these 36 hours feel like 36 centuries.

My Ruh?” my subconscious asked.

“Huh? I mean, she’s kind of My Rival. I just replaced ‘Rival’ with ‘Ruh,’ simple.”

‘Your logic sucks,’ my brain sassily mocked me.

Yeah, it kind of does.

But I am missing her. I sighed and went back inside my room.

I don’t know how, but she’s become a habit I can’t shake. I love the way she glares at me with those hazel eyes, how she gets annoyed when I tease her, it just draws me in. That little mole on her eyebrow only adds to her charm. The way she makes those cute faces when I irritate her, it’s like a spell I can’t break, and I have no idea what’s happening to me.

The hell with you, Vihaan.

She’s your rival.
Don’t think about her like that.
You need to win this competition, right?
Yes.

I walked downstairs to clear my mind of her thoughts. I saw my mom and hugged her from behind.

“Vihu, what do you want?” she asked while checking the ingredients.

“Nothing,” I said, sitting on the counter.

“Hmm, then do one thing for me,if you want nothing, fill the water bottles,” she said, still busy with her work.

Filling water bottles, this is even more boring.

I started filling the bottles when Prisha Di entered and lightly hit me on the back.

“Kya hai aapko?” ,I asked her.

(What’s wrong with you?)

She always does things like this.

“What? Just fill the water and please get me a glass of water,” she asked while eating an apple.

“You’re standing just two steps away from the fridge. I’m not getting it for you,” I replied, continuing my work. She glared at me, but I stuck out my tongue to tease her.

And in the end, I won.

Huh, I’m the best.

Feeling proud of myself, I didn’t notice the water bottle had overflowed.

To hell with you, Vihaan.

Before Mom sees this, I need to clean it up. I quickly grabbed an old mop and started cleaning. Thank God Mom didn’t see that.

“Prisha, can you do one thing? I need a recipe book from Kunal’s mother. Can you go, please? I’m craving that dish and really want to make it,” Mom asked Prisha Di.

Kunal Bhaiya.
That means Ruh’s brother.
Thank you, God.
Maybe I can see her now.

I immediately ran to Mom but hit my little toe.

‘Meri kismat hi kharab hai.’

(My luck is just terrible.)

Gosh, it hurts so much.

I walked over to Mom and said, “Mom, I can do it. Prisha Di, you eat your dinner, I’ll get the recipe book.” I was about to leave when I heard her.

Vihaan, tu kyu taklif utha raha hai? Main jaa sakti hoon. Huhh, so jaao, rest karo,” she said.

(Vihaan, why are you going to the trouble? I can go… Huh, just go to sleep and rest,)

“Dii, aap bhi na. Aap thak gayi hogi office se aake. Aap baithiye, main chala jaata hoon,” I tried to negotiate, but why was she so persistent on going?

(Di, come on. You must be tired after coming back from the office. You sit down, I’ll go)

“Vihaan, I can manage. Saamne wale hi ghar toh jaana hai. You don’t need to worry, I’m not that tired that I can’t walk a few steps,” she replied.

“Shut up, both of you! Dono ke dono ajeeb ho. Jaao, dono hi chale jao. Aur suno, take this box of sweets with you,” Mom yelled at us, handing us the box of sweets.

(Both of you are so weird. Just go, both of you. And listen, take this box of sweets with you)

I was about to go but stopped.

“Dii, yaha wait karo aap, me bas 2 min mein aaya,” I said, running upstairs to check myself in the mirror.

I needed to change my shirt.

(You wait here, I’ll be back in 2 minutes)

I changed into a navy blue shirt.

‘Like always, Vihaan, you’re looking very handsome.’

My eyes suddenly landed on some chocolates.

Yeah, she loves chocolate.

So, I grabbed the chocolates and my notes.

‘why notes?’ my intelligent Brain aksed.

‘So i can help her, it won’t be fair if I have previous year all quiz event questions and she doesn’t right? I believe in fair and equal rivalry’ i replied with my all intelligence present in me.

‘Huhh who are you fooling, I am your brain, please meri beizzati mat karana, accha sa bahana soch kr usse milna,’ my brain replied smartly.

(Please don’t embarrass me, think of a good excuse to meet her)

Huhh I ignored my brain comments, I fixed my hair and headed downstairs.

Prisha Di had also changed. We looked at each other from head to toe and spoke at the same time.

“Why did you change your clothes?”
“Why did you change your clothes?”

We both asked at the same time and then replied in unison.

“Meri marzi.”
“Meri marzi.”

(Because I wanted to)

She rolled her eyes, and I turned my face the other way as we both walked to the gate.

Finally, I can meet Ruh.
