I waved back at Tanya and started to walk back to my home.

But my luck is not with me.
This Chimpanzee.

Ahh he is so irritating. I fast my paced

I started walking fast and grabbed notes from my bag with only the important points for the competition.

I heard Vihaan shouting, “Ayee ruko toh”

(At least wait for me)

But am I going to listen to him?
No way.

Then he called me ‘Ruh’

And that’s when my heart began to flip around and started doing somersaults. It felt like butterflies were fluttering in my stomach, creating a mix of emotions. Every time he called me that, it intensified these feelings, almost like my heart might burst out of my chest.
If he keeps calling me that, my heart might run away from the ribcage.

“Ahh finally, ye bullet train ki speed se kaha jaa rhi thi,” he muttered, getting down on his knees.

(Ahh finally, where was I going at the speed of a bullet train)

“Mars par, chaloge?” I answered with a tight smile.

(On Mars, wanna go with me?)

“Not a bad idea, to bolo kab chalna hai?” he asked me with a sheepish smile.

(so when do we go?)

“Great! I’ll call NASA and get you a ticket for the Mars trip. By the way, Ruh, pack enough snacks, I would like to join you,” he continued with a smirk.

“Ugh, why are you such a pain?” I grumbled as I turned away to go start revising.

“What are you reading?” He asked, trying to sneak a peek at my notes.

“Tumse mtlb?” I snapped, flipping my notes and continuing to read.

(What’s it to you?)

“Ugh, don’t you get bored from studying so much? Seriously, you’re constantly studying in class and also here, shouldn’t you take a break?” he remarked.

“Are you trying to manipulate me so you can win the competition?” I questioned, stopping in my tracks and folding my arms.

“Nah, I don’t play those cheap tricks…..actually, I prefer expensive tricks,” he replied with a sheepish smile.

Did I mention that he’s such a weird species of Chimpanzee?

Always trying to get on my nerves.

“Why are you doing this?”

“Doing what?”

“Trying to annoy me.”

“Because…..I like…I like to irritate you….You look so funny when you scrunch your nose in anger, your whole face turns red like an angry bird, and it’s cute,” he said with a grin.

“You…” I tried to say, pointing my finger at him.

But poor me, I couldn’t remember any cool comebacks at that moment.

Ye kaam ke time par mera dimag vacation par chala jata hai.

(Whenever I need a cool comeback, my brain decides to go on vacation)

He points his finger towards me and asks sarcastically, “Come on, Ruh, say, I am waiting.”

I fumbled and responded, “You…you are…”

“I…I am….I am hot.”

“Yes….”I blurted out.

But then I realize what I just said. Ruh, you really need to watch what you say.

Galat time par zuban zyada chalne lgti hai.

(Your mouth starts running at the wrong time)

He smirked and said, “I can’t believe you think that of me,” hiding his face in his palms and blushing like a shy bride.

“No, that’s not what I meant,” I quickly retorted.

“Oh, come on, Ruh, you did say I am hot,” he teases, winking at me.

Feeling flustered, I hit my foot against his, causing him to groan in pain.

With a tight smile, I apologize, “Oops sorry, I didn’t realize I stepped in on your feet”

I then move ahead.

Calm down your heartbeat Ruhii. Why is it beating so fast. Breathe…try to breathe.

As I continue, I see that the road is blocked. “Why is it blocked?”

I wonder to myself.

Vihaan comes up from behind and suggests, “Looks like an accident happened here.”

We heard from some people around here that a truck hit a car but luckily no one got hurt.

The police were checking things out.

“Let’s go through the back alley,” he said, sliding his hands in his pockets.

“Back alley?”

“You don’t know it?”

“Nope.”

“Well, time to show you some shortcuts,” he said, grabbing my hand and leading me to the alley.

When he touched my hand, I felt a warm jolt of electricity that gave me a sense of relief. Every part of my body buzzed with emotions. It was like an unfamiliar touch that quickly grew stronger. My heart beat started to beat in a new, different rhythm, sending sensations all over my body.

This touch was new to me, unfamiliar but growing more intense with each passing moment.
My mind raced, my heart pounded, and it seemed like every cell in my body was alive with emotions I couldn’t quite name. An unknown emotion.

Heading towards the alley, it seemed almost deserted, with a few houses, a small tea stall, and a garden.

It was oddly beautiful, yet strangely empty.

“Vihaan, why is this place deserted? There are hardly any people around,” I asked curiously.

“Well, there’s a stupid rumor that this neighborhood is haunted and that there are ghosts in the few remaining homes,” Vihaan explained.

“Ridiculous… it’s so beautiful and peaceful here. The garden looks amazing with all the blooming flowers, and the atmosphere is really positive,” I remarked.

“Exactly, let’s just keep it ‘haunted’ so that we can have this peaceful spot to ourselves. Whenever you’re feeling stressed, just come here to relax,” he suggested, smiling as he gazed at the flowers.

There was a moment when my heart skipped a beat at the sight of his smile.

“Are you scared, Ruh?” he suddenly asked making me come back to earth from Vihaanland.

“Scared? Nahh, I watch horror movies alone at night,” I bragged, showing off another skill of mine.

“That’s why you’re a witch,” he mumbled, thinking I hadn’t heard him.

“I heard everything,” I said while scrunching my eyebrows.

“Ahh you have great listening skills, let’s go,” he said, grabbing my hand and starting to walk ahead swiftly.

Gosh, he sure moves fast!

I was trying to move fast to match his pace and this darn shoelace decided to come loose.

Next thing you know, I tripped cause of my shoelace.

Vihaan was holding my hands, and to support myself I held him among him turns but stupid and clumsy me, of course, it ended up with me tripping over him.

He kind of stumbled, hitting the house boundary wall.

And then, in a classic clumsy move, I grab his shirt’s top part to stop it from falling, which leads to his first two buttons break.

And to add another embarrassment i accidentally brushed against his chest, the embarrassment is real.

But his skin felt so smooth.
Like did he use baby cream or what?

Ugh, Ruhii, eiii what the hell you are thinking, get a grip.
It’s bad manners.

I catch him staring intensely at me, and suddenly I realize the whole situation.

Stepping back, trying to maintain my composure, bit my lips in nervousness and embarrassment

Gosh, what’s he thinking?

As he fixes himself, carefully picking up those fallen buttons and slipping them into his pocket.

“Vihaan, I’m really sorry,” I mumbled, cursing myself under my breath.

Ah, what an stupid girl you are Ruhanika!

“Ruh, I know I’m hot, handsome, charming, dashing, breathtaking, and irresistible, but control your hormones. Aise mera galat fayda naah uthao, Ye sab krne ki abhi umar nhi hai hamari aur waise bhi mujhe sharm bahut aati hai,” he said giving his tie, with a hint of teasing.

(Don’t take advantage of me like this.
We’re not at the age for this yet, and besides, I get really shy about these things)

Hainnn.
Galat fayda.
Hormones par control.
Aur kisi baat par sharam aati hai isko.

(To take advantage.
Hormone control.
And why is he feeling shy?)

“Don’t ask for detailed information, it’s embarrassing.” He said, hiding his face in his palm.

Soon I understood what he meant.

“You… shameless… I didn’t mean that… stop having nasty thoughts, chimpanzee,” I said and walked ahead, feeling my cheeks getting hotter.

Idiot Chimpanzee. He doesn’t have filter in his mouth, always thinking way ahead.

I was aimlessly waking until I heard him.

“Anyway, don’t go that way, we have to take a left turn,” he shouted, and I turned back to follow him.

Seeing my reaction, he burst out laughing.

“Ruhh, you are so cute,” he said, ruffling my hair.

I lowered my head so he couldn’t see my red tomato cheeks.

I didn’t realize when I reached home.

“Bye Ruh,” he said and went inside.

I shook my head, a goofy smile plastered on my face.

By the way, when did we reach home?

‘When you are busy with your shy partner,’ my subconscious easily replied.

“Shut up, he’s a chimpanzee who is always having nasty thoughts,” I scrunched my nose in anger and went to open the gate.

I entered the house and saw everyone was there.

Did mom and dad come back early from the hospital?

I rushed to take a quick shower, change my clothes, had lunch, and then went for a nap.

Oh, this afternoon nap feels like heaven.

I didn’t even realize that I slept and woke up late.

Oh no, Ruhii, if Dad finds out I slept so much, he’s definitely going to scold me.

I quickly got up, had my study session, then after studying for four hours, I felt too tired and went to my favorite section of the bookshelf.

I picked a novel and started reading it.

You know, when you really need to escape from your messed-up life, just travel to a fictional world.

I was engrossed in my book and suddenly my mind went to Vihaan.

I closed my book, laid on the bed, and started thinking about him.

He is not that bad.

I remember his smile.

It was the first time my heart beat raced for anyone. More than anything, my heart beats solely for his smile. It’s as if his smile is the only thing that can truly make my heart come alive. Each time he smiles, my heart dances to a melody meant only for him.

I don’t know but a foolish smile make a way to my face.

I remember every single antics of him.

“Why are smiling like a fool?”, my brother asked while entering into room and chewing apple.

“Bhai, please at least knock the door,” i said to him.

“Mere aur tere beech ye privacy kaha se agyi, ab bol ye itna muskuraya kis baat par jaa rha tha,” he asked while laying on the bed.

(Where did this privacy come from between me and you, now tell me what were you thinking about that you are smiling so much?)

“Yeah I was watching a clown, he looked so funny that I couldn’t stop smiling,” i replied to him.

“Oh really show me”

And I show him his picture.

He furrowed his eyebrows and looked at me with corner of his and start hitting me with pillow.

And with that we again started pillow fighting which was continue for 15 minutes.

We both got tired and burst out laughing.

“Baccha, are you feeling good in your new school right? You are not feeling uncomfortable, if yes then tell I’ll help you to change school,” he said in a concerning voice.

“Shh bhaiya, let me speak, yeah I am feeling good and even I made a friend Tanya, you know she is so good, like amazing, Yash and Sid they are also a bunch of happiness, you know yash always come to me lunch break and we did a lot of gossips after meeting him i never knew i can talk, and Sid he is calm person which is what I like about him and we literally talked about every new horror movies…and you know Vihaan gosh he is irritating but not that bad always making me smile somehow, yeah his screw of brain is loose little” i replied to him smiling.

He smiled and looked at me.

“What happened?” I asked.

“It was the first time you talked about your friends,” he said.

Then I realised that I never had friends in my previous school, and maybe I am somehow scared of losing them, what if I say or did something unintentionally that hurts them and they leave me, or they don’t like me.

“Don’t overthink Ruhii, they won’t leave you” bhai said caressing my head.

“How can you listen to everything which i am thinking?” I asked him curiously.

He smiled and replied to me, “magical powers Ruhii”

“He also has the same magical powers” I murmured thinking about him deeply.

“Who?” Bhai asked.

I immediately shook my head and said “no one”

“Okay, come downstairs, dinner is ready”

I nodded to him and started arranging the books which fell over all the bed, when I found something.

The eye sketch.
And the name written on this sketch.
Vani.

Oh now I remember she was the girl who I met that day in the corridor.
That’s why she seems so familiar.
But that day, why she was crying?
