I had just woken up from my afternoon nap, only to realize that I had slept for much longer than I intended.
I thought I’d only been asleep for about 40 minutes, but when did it had turned into 2 hours.
I jumped out of bed and decided to take a shower to clear my mind. After freshening up, I had some evening snacks and tried to get back to studying.
After studying, it was time to irritate my brother.
Even though it was a holiday and everyone was at home, the house felt oddly quiet.
I wished we could all spend some quality family time together. I went into my brother’s room and found him sleeping like a log.
It seemed like the perfect opportunity to annoy him, so I grabbed a marker and drew silly patterns on his face.
This was the third time I had done this. The last time, Kunal bhai had been really angry with me, but I had a magical power, my all time weapon-I could just make an innocent face, and he would forgive me.
I drew these patterns as payback for the time he had done something similar to me.
“Wow, Ruhanika, you are a good artist,” I thought, patting myself on the back.
Then I went back to my room, feeling a bit bored, and decided to read a book.
But then I heard Mom calling, “How are you, beta? Come inside.”
Who could be here?
I walked down the stairs and saw someone I really didn’t want to see: Vihaan.
I watched him carefully, and when our eyes met, he raised his eyebrows.
That brought me back to reality.
I realized I looked a mess. My hair was all over the place, and since I had taken a shower in the evening, I decided to wear my nightwear.
I look like a complete disaster.
I quickly went back to my room and tried to fix my hair, but then I thought, why am I doing this?
He had already seen me looking like this. And it’s not like I am trying to impress him.
But still, can’t he tell me that he is coming soon that I could at least look like a human.
Idiot Chimpanzee
Still, I fixed my hair and went downstairs.
Vihaan was chatting with my mom, looking quite charming.
He seemed to be the most innocent person ever, but I knew better.
Soon, Dad joined them, and they were all laughing, giggling. Like what they are talking about.
“Hi Prisha dii,” I greeted with a smile.
She looked at me and said, “Hi Ruhanika,” she greeted me, but her gaze was on the stairs.
I looked up but didn’t see anyone.
Never mind.
I walked past Vihaan.
Mom gave me a sharp look, and I knew exactly what it meant. I gave a tight smile and said, “Hello, Vihaan.”
He smiled and greeted back and went back to his conversation with Dad.
Prisha dii went with Mom to get a recipe book, and I stayed where I was, watching them.
Mom and Prisha dii, soon return, and Mom said, “You both stay here. I’ll be back with some snacks.”
Prisha dii was about to refuse, but Mom gave her a look that left no room for argument.
Mom’s glare is her most effective weapon. She can get anyone to do anything with just a look.
My attention then shifted to Vihaan. He was wearing a navy blue shirt that suited him perfectly. I hadn’t noticed him before, but he looked surprisingly good.
‘What do you mean he’s not that bad? Of course, he looks worth drooling over,’ my subconscious said in a dreamy tone.
When did my mind start thinking like this?
His top buttons were undone, revealing a light mole on his neck near his collarbone.
His sleeves were rolled up, and that’s it, my heart started doing somersaults, and felt all tingling sensation all over my body.
Get a grip over yourself Ruhanika Oberoi…!!!
I realised what I was doing.
When did I become so shameless, admiring a boy and staring at him non-stop in front of my own father?
What if Dad saw me? What would he think?
I glanced at Dad and Vihaan, relieved to see they hadn’t noticed me.
I am safe.
I was about to head back to my room because Dad and Vihaan were chatting like they have known each other for ages.
Prisha dii was also getting bored, but continuosly tapping her foot.
“What happen dii?” I asked to which she nervously chuckled and replied, “nothing much…umm Ruhii where is Kunal…I mean everyone is here I didn’t saw him….just asking?”
“Ohh Bhai is sleeping,” i replied.
“Oh…okay…I should go to aunty and help her”, I was about to refuse but she already went with the speed of light.
I decided to go to the kitchen too, but Mom sent me back, saying tumhare kitchen me kadam rakhte hi kitchen me tsunami aa jayegi.
(my presence would only create chaos)
And she was right. Whenever I entered the kitchen, it seemed to only make more mess and add to Mom’s work.
As I was about to leave, Dad said, “There’s an emergency call. Ruhii, take Vihaan to your room. He’ll get bored here.”
Dad then went up to his room.
Vihaan looked at me with a playful smile, and I sighed, knowing he was about to be a nuisance for me.
“Ab chalne ka invitation dena padega ya aapke liye rath ka intezaam krwaao,” I said, folding my arms.
(Do I need to give you a formal invitation to leave, or should I arrange a chariot for you?)
“Aapko hamare liye itni takleef uthane ki zarurat nhi, aap jaha bolengi waha chal denge, bas Aap saath me honi chahiye hamare,” he said, his tone charming, intensely looking at me.
(You don’t need to go through so much trouble. I’ll go wherever you say, i just need you to be with me)
My stomach did a tipsy turvy dance, and I could feel my heart racing.
I decided to ignore the fluttering in my chest and walked up the stairs, with Vihaan following me like an obedient puppy.
I opened the door to my room and felt him walking behind me.
He whispered huskily, “You know, Ruh, it’s bad manners to stare at someone.”
A shiver ran down my spine, and my breath caught.
I looked at him, and he had his infamous smirk on his face.
I cleared my throat and asked, “When did I stare?”
He replied, “Oh, you did. But if you want, I can stay with you all day, and you can stare at me as much as you like—just not in front of your father. What would he think?” He said this dramatically and then sat on the bed, looking at me.
I sighed, realizing he was teasing me. Why does he always do this?
Annoyed, I stomped my foot on the floor and walked to the other side of the bed.
He started laughing.
Now what?
Why is he laughing?
Do I look like a witch right now?
“Nope, you look like a beautiful witch,” he said with a sheepish smile.
Did I say that out loud?
“Yes, a little too loud,” he mocked me again.
I tried to ignore his teasing.
“Hmm, take these, these are some previous year quiz questions I got from a senior,” he said, handing me some notes.
“Thanks,” I said, reaching for the notes, but he held them tightly.
I looked at him, and he was just staring at me.
“Vihaan,” I called him.
“Hnn,” he replied, sounding confused.
“Um, can I take these notes?” I asked, raising my eyebrows.
“Sorry, yes, you can,” he said, snapping out of his daze.
“Your room gives me peace vibes, all white with a touch of blue. I can see everything is white,” he commented, looking around like a curious child.
“Oh, white is my favorite color, that’s why,” I explained.
He nodded and continued observing the room like a kid with a smile on his face, which made me smile too.
“Oh no, I totally forgot,” he yelled, almost making me shiver.
“What?” I asked, and he pulled something out of his pocket.
“For you,” he said, handing me a chocolate but with a sad face. “Oops, it melted.”
I laughed at his expression.
“Umm, Ruh. Keep this in the fridge and then eat it,” he said.
“Thank you once again,” I replied, taking the chocolate.
“Vihaan, Ruhanika, come downstairs,” we heard Mom call, and he stood up to head downstairs.
“By the way, are you ready for the day after tomorrow?” he asked, and his playful demeanor disappeared, replaced by his usual mischievous self.
“Yes, Mr. Raichand, I am all ready,” I responded with the same intensity.
“Oh, that’s good. I thought you might be afraid of losing and having to remove your name from the competition,” he said, mocking me again.
This chimpanzee could never be cute, always trying to find ways to annoy me.
As I stood at the door, ready to move ahead, I turned back to see where he was looking.
“Ruh, is this golgappa you?” he said, holding up a childhood photo frame.
“Vihaan, stop looking and give that to me,” I said, walking over to get the photo.
He muffled his laugh but soon burst into laughter like a maniac.
The photo was a childhood picture I kept on my table. I was playing in the mud eating food with all mess, and Bhai had clicked it.
“Gosh, Ruh, you were so cute as a child. Look at you with your angry bird face, your cheeks turned all red in this photo, and to be honest you are still the same your cheeks and nose turned red like tomato when you are angry,” he said while laughing, walking to the other side of the bed.
It’s embarrassing.
I tried to get the photo from him.
“Vihaan, I said give it to me, otherwise…”
“Otherwise what, Ruh?” he teased me, holding the photo and mimicked me.
I ran up to him and tried to grab the photo, but he held it up high. As he walked backward, his back touched the wall.
We ended up too close, so close that I can smell his sweet fragrance, his hand lost grip on the photo, and I managed to snatch it away.
As I turned to leave, my hair got tangled in his shirt. In my attempt to hold on, I ended up falling on top of him on the bed.
We looked into each other’s eyes, both of us looking intensely i can feel his heart beat racing, we were lost until I winced in pain as he tried to get up, but my hair was still caught in his button.
“Wait, Ruh,” he said, starting to untangle my hair.
I winced in pain, “You chimpanzee, handle my hair carefully. Not a single strand should be damaged.”
“Jaisa aap hukum krein, Miss Ruh,” he replied, trying to be gentle.
(As you command)
After about two minutes, he carefully freed my hair. Though I didn’t feel any more pain, I lost two hairs in the process.
We stood up, both of us feeling awkward but trying to avoid looking at each other.
“I lost two hairs,” I murmured.
“Don’t worry. I heard witches can grow their hair back,” he mocked me again.
Can he be serious for once? It’s about my hair…..my precious two hairs, Alvida.
(Farewell to you)
We both walked downstairs without glancing at each other.
I thought about how often I embarrassed myself in front of him.
I pouted sadly.
“Where have you two been? We’ve been waiting for you,” Mom said to us as we entered the room.
We looked at each other awkwardly and cleared our throat, then looked back at Mom.
She said, “Vihaan, come sit. I made this snack. Please taste it and tell me how it is.”
“Ji aunty,” he replied and sat beside Mom.
I walked over to Prisha di, and we began chatting.
Suddenly, we heard Kunal bhai’s voice.
“You Ruhii ki bacchi, I’ll kill you today!” he yelled, coming downstairs in just his pants, without a shirt. It looked like he had just realized what I did to his Chand ke tukde wala face.
He looked around and, realizing there were more people present, turned back and went upstairs, cursing under his breath.
“Hot,” I heard Prisha dii say.
I turned and asked, “Hnn?”
“Ahh, I mean the tea is hot,” she corrected herself, sipping her tea.
Everyone looked at each other and burst into laughter.
It seems like my brother tops the rank in embarrassing himself.
Both of us, siblings, have taken on the role of embarrassing ourselves.
“By the way, how is the preparation going for both of you?” my dad asked.
Vihaan, with a slight smirk on his face, responded, “Uncle, it’s going well. In fact, all of us friends who are participating have decided to practice together tomorrow with teachers.”
Wait.
When did this happen?
Dad then turned to me and asked, “Oh, Ruhanika, you’re going too?” I was about to shake my head, but Vihaan had already taken the initiative.
“No, Uncle, she’s not. Why don’t you let her join me for the practice session? It’s her first time participating in this competition, and I’ll explain everything to her,” Vihaan said, portraying fake innocence.
Dad, as always, agreed, “Yes, sure Ruhii, you should go.”
Vihaan smirked at me, and I was internally plotting how to kill him and make it look like an accident.
Shhh, Ruhanika, bad manners.
You’re a good girl.
Don’t think like that.
As this Chimpanzee and Prisha dii were about to leave, she went to attend the call and he was standing there.
I was closing the door behind them when I turned to Vihaan and asked, “Why did you do this?”
“What?” he replied, pretending to be innocent.
“That practice session, I know you’re lying,” I said firmly.
“To annoy you,” he admitted, smiling sheepishly. He mumbled something under his breath that I couldn’t quite hear.
“You know what—”
“Yes, what?” he said, raising his eyebrows.
“Tumko toh main baad mein dekhti hoon,” I said with a tight smile, meaning I’d deal with him later.
(I’ll deal with you later)
“Acche se dekhna, dekhne waali hi cheez hoon main,” he replied, winking at me before heading back to the main gate and closing the door behind him.
(Make sure you look closely, I am worth looking at)
I turned around and heard him call out, “Ruh, I’m not lying. We all decided to meet up for practice, and Ragini miss is also coming. I’m not lying. Did you check your class group chats?”
Since I hadn’t checked my phone since the afternoon, I went up to my room, checked the messages, and saw that Vihaan was actually telling the truth.
He could have told me normally but no Mr. Chimpanzee Raichand have to annoy me.
‘Waise Ruh, he is indeed dekhne waali cheez ‘ my inner voice dreamily said.
(he’s definitely worth looking at)
It’s true.
I absentmindedly said this to myself as I thought about him and went again to Vihaanland.
