“That’s it”, Vani replied.

Ragini smiled and said while looking for an empty seat in class,” Vani…umm you may sit with Tanya and Ruhanika….there second bench….and about the notes you can take help with them…also I’ll be there for you if you need any help you can come to me anytime”

Vani nodded and moved to the seat.

Tanya was sitting beside the window side and Ruhanika was in front side.

“Umm which side you will prefer?”, Tanya asked Vani to which she said, “any side”

She said and sat in between Tanya and Ruhanika.

While Ruhanika was keenly looking at her.

‘Why do she seems familiar’, she thought.

Vani looked at Ruhanika and asked,” Am I looking beautiful that you can’t take your eyes off…huh?”

While Ruhanika awwkwardly laughed, “Ahh…I mean you are beautiful but it was just I am thinking about something….ahh nothing do you want notes?”

“Just tell me how much of the syllabus has been covered so far?”

Ruhanika explained the whole syllabus to her.

Tanya and Ruhi were chatting with each other and attempted to engage Vani in conversations so that she won’t feel left out, but she seemed unresponsive, only replying with one word or two word answers.

They thought that Vani needed some space to adjust as she was new, they decided to give her some time.

Since Ruhii was also new, she seemed to understand Vani’s situation and tried to make her feel comfortable.

When it was lunchtime, Tanya asked Vani “would like to join us for lunch?” with a hopeful smile, but as usual, Vani maintained her stoic expression and replied with a “No.”

Tanya’s smile faded, but she quickly composed herself, while Ruhii nodded in understanding to give Vani some space.

“It’s okay, but if you ever want some company, we’re here for you,” Ruhii said politely.

Vani expressed, “thank you for asking but I like to be alone”.

“Ahh okay…..but are you not going to have lunch?” Ruhii asked as she continued writing her notes.

“I’m not hungry, so you guys can leave or time will get over,” Vani said without even looking at them.

They both just sighed and headed to the canteen.

Sitting on the bench in the school garden, they noticed the playground, basketball court, and the garden on the other side.

“I didn’t know we had a basketball team in our school,” Ruhanika asked, glancing at the players practicing.

“Oh, you didn’t know? We’ve got a basketball team, a cricket team, a kho-kho team, and we even formed a football team last year,” Tanya replied casually.

“And you know, we also have a girls’ basketball team and a tennis team. Want to join?” Tanya asked while finishing the last bite.

“Nah, not my thing…..I’m good as an audience. Honestly, I don’t really have a sportsperson’s spirit,” Ruhii said.

They both looked at each other and burst out laughing.

“Oh, speaking of the basketball team, do you know our senior, he is a sports captain. He’s so hot and he is a captain of basketball team too. You know he is so handsome Like, every girl has a crush on him,” Tanya said dreamily.

“Wait, so you have a crush on him too?” Ruhanika teasingly asked.

Tanya chuckled and responded, “Nah, I don’t have a crush on him… because I-” but then stopped in the middle and started stuffing the bites.

“Because?”

“Oh, never mind, let’s just eat lunch quickly, try this Ruhii you will definitely like it,” Tanya said, causing Ruhii to furrow her brow, but Tanya simply brushed it off.

“Waise, who’s this senior?” Ruhii asked as Tanya smirked at her.

“Why are you asking…are you trying to find out more about him or something or like you are interested in him ?”

“What No, not at all…..I was just curious, that’s all,” Ruhi clarified.

Tanya chuckled, “Alright, alright, I was just joking… actually, I can’t remember his name, but I heard from a classmate that he got injured in the last game, so he’s been on bed rest for the past two months and I think Vihaan is filling in for his place as a temporary basketball captain.”

“Vihaan?”

“Yeah, and Sid is also a great player,” Tanya added.

“Oh, so Vihaan, Sid, Yash, the trio are all part of the school sports team.

“No, Yash is not a fan of basketball, he actually enjoys playing tennis more. He’s quite good at it, you know? He has won five tennis tournaments and even has a brown belt in karate,” Tanya said with excitement a silly smile wearing on her face.

“Seems like you know a lot about Yash,” Ruhi remarked.

“Oh yeah, Yash and I have been best friends since we were in play school. We met Vihaan and Sid in second grade when our classes suddenly merged,” Tanya said while remembering her memories.

“Have you two been friends since childhood?” Ruhi asked curiously.

“Yeah, we have been together since childhood. I actually live with a relative since my parents are in the village. It was my dad’s dream for me to get an education, but my grandparents disagreed. They didn’t see the need for me to study. My dad fought with everyone and finally sent me here to study. And my kaki works for Yash’s mom who has a small embroidery business on the side. My kaki is skilled in embroidery, so she and a few other women work with Yash’s mom, I was little so kaki used to take me with her and that’s how we met,” Tanya shared.

Seeing her so happy talking about her family and especially Yash made me smile.

Are they just best friends?

Or am I just overthinking?

“It looks like your dad really loves you,” I said.

“Yeah, if I’m close to anyone, it’s my dad. I share everything with him, we talk for hours every day. I tell him every little detail about my day, and he patiently listens to all my bakbak,” she responded.

It hit me hard that her dad talks to her for hours daily, while I barely spend 2 minutes a week with mine. I’ve never had a good relationship with my father. Sure, he played with me when I was a kid, but as life went on, we drifted apart.

It just we both are silent. Whenever I tried to talk to him about my life, the talk surely ends up with the topic of my study. And because of this I stopped talking to him. And maybe that’s how we distanced. And about my mumma yeah sometimes we spend time together.

Maybe I’m a bit jealous of Tanya and her dad’s bond.

I wish I could talk to him, share my day, share my little things, but I sadly chuckled, realizing it might not be possible.

I just shook my head and decided to not think about this, and then I looked at Tanya.

She was going on with her babbling, and I was patiently listening to her. I liked talking with her, i realised that I am slowly slowly opening up to her.

I was looking straight ahead when my eyes fell on Yash. I was about to call him, but then I saw him with some other girl.

She’s not from our class, and they seem really close.

Absentmindedly, I muttered, “Isn’t that Yash?”

Tanya looked at me, then followed my gaze, and her happy expression fell, her eyes became empty.

“Is she from our class?”

She looked at me and smiled forcefully, “Hmm, I don’t know, she is not from our class…..Ruhii, can you take my lunchbox to class? I need to go to the washroom.”

I nodded and took the lunchbox.

“Ruhanika.”

As I was heading to the classroom, I heard my name – it was Sid.

“Siddharth…”

“Can you do me a favor?”he asked, all serious.

“Okay, but first, please calm down.”

“Can you pass this juice bottle to Vihaan at the back of the basketball court? I really need to hand in my assignment today and the teacher is having half day. She will be gone in a few minutes.”

“Sure, but I’m not sure if I can carry both the lunchbox and the bottle together.”

“No worries, I have to grab my notebook from the classroom anyway, so I’ll leave it on your desk.”

“Alright,” I replied as he grabbed the lunchboxes, handed me the bottle, and ran with the speed of light.

“Wow, that was quick,” I remarked.

I sighed.

Even though I wasn’t in the mood to deal with Chimpanzee right now, I couldn’t bring myself to refuse.

It’s just a habit of mine I can’t say no to anyone when someone asks me for their help.

I frowned and reluctantly decided to go along with it.

I made my way towards the basketball court, where I saw many students and the coach giving a speech.

I waited impatiently until the boring speech finally ended.

I approached him.

He’s standing with some of his teammates talking to them, Gosh Ruhii there are so many people around.

I can talk with Chimpanzee easily but for some reason I get all nervous in front of so many people.

Can’t he stand alone for few minutes.

‘Usko sapne thodi na aa rhe ki Ruhii ji uske paas aayengi’, my brain taunted me.

(He is not dreaming that Ruhi ji will come to him)

And I pouted because somehow my brain is right.

It’s so simple, Ruhii, you just have to act confidently. So I took a deep breath and called out to him, “Vihaan.”

He glanced over at me and the other teammates did too.

Why are they all staring at me like I’m some alien or something? I’m already anxious and they’re just making it worse.

I can tell Vihaan notices I feel nervous, so he walks over to me and the others start moving away.

I took another deep breath and locked eyes with him.

“Why are you here?”, he asked raising his eyebrows.

“Ahh this…your bottle Sid said to give you”, I said and handed him bottle.

“Open it,” he said.

“Excuse me, i can see you have your both hands so please do it by yourself,” I replied while faking my smile.

He smirked and show me his hands which is band-aid.

“How did this happen?”

“Nothing just a little bit injury while practicing” he said caressing his hands.

I can know very well what he is trying to do but poor my heart is feeling bad. Come on Ruhii put your ego side and help him.

“Uhmm..okay I am opening it…well did you have your lunch?”, I asked while opening the bottle.

“Yeah I have my lunch before the lunch break,” he said mischievously while winking at me.

I shook my head at his antics and about to pass the bottle when someone pushed me making me lose my balance as the juice spills on his shirt and little bit on my shirt.

“WHAT THE-“

“WHAT THE-“

We both yelled together glaring at the boy because of him it happens he looked at us nervously and muttered Sorry, and ran in a blink of light.

“Can’t you hold the bottle properly…eeww it is feeling sticky”, he said whining like a child.

“Even it felt on me…now drink it before it felt again,” I said.

We both went to the water tap and started cleaning but my clumsy soul didn’t let me live in peace.

I accidentally turned the tap too far, causing the water to spray out and soak Vihaan.

His shirt became completely wet and sticking to his body like a transparent skin. I can see everything.

Shut Up Ruhii, stop doing this.

This is Bad Manners Ruhii.

I quickly looked away, feeling embarrassed.

“You know jabse tum meri life me aai ho my life SUCKS,” he said, gritting his teeth and looking clearly irritated.

(You know, ever since you came into my life, my life sucks)

How dare he say that?

“Hnn toh tumhare aane se meri life me konse sadabahar khil gaye hai, even my life after meeting you SUCKS,” I replied back with the same intensity.

(Oh yeah? Like my life has been all sunshine and rainbows since you showed up! Even my life after meeting you sucks)

I flipped my hair over my shoulder and stormed off.

I hate him.

How dare he say his life sucks because of me? I muttered to myself as I walked away, only to bump into another guy.

‘You’re such a clumsy girl, Ruhii,’ I thought to myself.

Without even looking up, I mumbled, “I’m sorry, bhaiya,” and ran to my classroom.
