Tan nervously waits for Sven to come over as his mom sets up the table and his dad is in his office working.
“Are you going to help me, Tanner?” His mom asks
“Sure.” He starts to set the table with her “when Sven gets here could you please not ask him if we’re in a relationship?”
“Are you in a relationship?”
“No mom we’re not he’s my friend”
“Sure ok” she smiles “I’ll go get your father.” His mom walks away, knocking before opening the door “Scott dinner’s ready”
“I’m very busy right now Sheila is his boyfriend even here yet?”
“No, and he’s not his boyfriend”
“Then why are we meeting him? I have cases I cannot waste time meeting all of Tan’s friends”
“Listen to me!” She hisses and Tan hears them “we said we’d try for him right? Our son wants us to meet this boy so get off your ass and try!” Walking back to the living room Tan stares at his mother “he’ll be out soon.”
Tan nods “Sven’s on his way.”
Hearing the doorbell after a while, Tan heads for it opening it to Sven’s face “hi” he smiles seeing Tan
“Hi” Tan pulls him in shutting the door
“I’m so nervous” he whispers as they stand by the door
“Don’t be” Tan comforts him “come on.” They walk to the table as Tan’s dad walks over from his office “mom, dad this is Sven”
“Nice to meet you Mr. and Mrs. Milton” he shakes their hands
“You too Sven welcome to our home” Shiela smiles, “why don’t we sit down” they do so and everyone starts to reach around putting food on their plates. Dinner starts quietly as they eat with Tan’s parents on both ends of the table and Sven is sat next to Tan. “So…” his mom starts, “Tan tells us you’re on the basketball team?”
“Yes ma’am I’m JV captain”
“You’re a well-built kid why aren’t you on varsity?”
Sven smiles because the question reminds him of the many times Tan has brought it up. “Well I was on varsity but our JV team needed some guidance-“
“And did you?” Scott cuts in “guide them I mean?”
“Since Sven joined the JV team they started winning more games than varsity, he turned the whole team around so much so that coach asked him to play with the varsity team in the championship game,” Tan explains putting a smile on Sven’s face.
“You mean the championship you lost?” Scott asks
“That wasn’t his fault dad the varsity captain sucks”
“Then why is he captain?” Tan’s dad looks at Sven “why not you?”
“I do not know, Sir.”
The table gets quiet again with the sound of silverware hitting plates, the doorbell goes off and everyone looks at each other not expecting anyone. “I’ll get it” Tan stands up leaving Sven alone with his parents.
Opening the door to the last person anyone expects Tan’s heart stops when his eyes land on Harris. “I tried calling but you didn’t answer” Harris explains to a panicking Tan
“I’m having dinner with my parents, what are you doing here?”
“Who is it, Tan?” His dad calls out and he freezes
“Uh it’s me Scott” he walks in leaving Tan stuck at the door, “I’m so sorry to disturb your dinner”
“Hi, Harris how are you?” Tan’s mom greets
“I’m fine Mrs. Milton, how are you?” He smiles trying to be polite “so sorry to barge in like this sir, but I just got a call from Judge Spence’s office informing me that the Harrison case is going to trial in the morning, and I really need those files to prepare.” Tan walks in the room as Harris explains, he sits back down next to Sven who’s completely clueless to how awkward the whole ordeal actually is.
“All right give me a second the folders are in my office” Scott leaves the table.
Standing there Harris stares at Tan who’s avoiding eye contact and the guy sitting next to him, it’s so quiet that he feels he has to say something “dinner looks delicious Mrs. Milton.”
“Thank you, Harris” Shiela gets a terrible idea “would you want to join us?” Tan stares at her shocked by the invite
And Harris notices “I’d love to really but I have to prepare for tomorrow morning and that’ll probably take all night”
“Come on what’s half an hour for a home cooked meal, I’ll get you a plate sit down.”
“He said he didn’t want to mom” Tan tried to defuse the bomb about to go off.
“Don’t be silly Tan the more the merrier, sit down honey” she rushes to the kitchen. Harris and Tan lock eyes as he sits across the boy, scared Tan tries to hide his nervousness but Sven notices
“You ok?” He leans closer whispering in Tan’s ear and he nods.
Shiela comes back out helping Harris fill his plate with food “oh Harris this is Tan’s friend from school Sven, and this is Tan’s friend from his father’s office Harris.”
“Nice to meet you” Sven greets
“You too” Harris stares back and forth between both boys.
And the awkward dinner commences with everyone trying to eat but Tan and Harris are too freaked out to eat, Harris watches Tan and the guy sitting next to him how much they smile at each other, and every single time they’ve whispered something to each other. It’s like he could tell what was really going on, why Tan is as freaked as he is “Shiela did I tell you about Harris’s new promotion?” Scott starts
“What? No”
“Yeah Assistant DA”
“Harris that’s amazing!”
“Thank you Mrs. Milton” he smiles “um could someone point me to the bathroom?” He asks but focuses on Tan
“Sure I can take you to it” they both stand up and Harris follows behind Tan down the hallway. When they are far enough Tan turns “congratulations”
“I can’t believe I’m having dinner at your house with your boyfriend” he laughs in disbelief.
“He is not my boyfriend” Tan explains
“Really because you could’ve fooled me, the way he stares at you and you guys giggle to each other. And what kind of name is Sven?”
“Are you jealous?”
“Do you have feelings for him?” He asks a question he doesn’t want the answer to
“Harry-“
“No actually don’t answer that” he chuckles.
“I’m sorry Harry”
“What about me Tan?” They whisper back and forth to each other “what about how I feel about you?”
“How do you feel about me?”
Taking small steps towards the boy Harris has him pinned against the wall, looking into his eyes “all I ever do is think about you” his lowered voice and the feel of his breath against Tan’s face is turning the boy on. “How incredibly sexy you are, the amount of effort it takes to be around you.” He brushes his lips against Tan’s stealing a small kiss “I want you, I want you all the time.”
“Harry we can’t…” Tan fights against wanting to rip the suit off the man’s body “I have to go back” he crawls his way out. “I’m sorry” Tan apologizes leaving, and Harris watches with sad eyes as he leaves the hallway.
Too bothered to stay Harris waits a moment then walks back to the table “thank you so much for the food Mrs. Milton but I should really go start prepping for the case”
“No problem thank you for staying.”
“For sure, I’ll see you tomorrow Scott. Have a good night Tan, Tan’s friend” he grabs what he came for leaving the house.
Harris sits in his car taking a breath before he pulls away.
“That went well right?” Sven asks as Tan walks him to his car after dinner
“Aside from my dad threatening to prosecute you to the full extent of the law…” they both laugh, “I think it went great.” Stopping when they get to his car “thanks for tonight”
“No thank you for going along with this” they hug each other and Sven gets in his car waving before he pulls off.
With no one to eat lunch with Monday at school Tan sits in the courtyard alone listening to music to drown out the noises, that is soon interrupted by Lin. “You can lie to everyone else but me” she sits in front of him with a smile
“What?” He asks confused
“When your father is the DA and something happens at his office sometimes it pops up on everyone’s google trending.” She hands him her phone “Harris Wheeler Assistant District Attorney” Tan stares at the picture of his father and Harris on Lin’s phone. “Please Tan lie to me again about how you don’t know that man”
“What’s your point?” Tan pushes the phone away trying to stay calm even though he’s freaking out inside
“I was right!” She stares at him “what are you doing with this man Tan?”
“You don’t know what you’re talking about”
Lin always knew Tan, and if he’s denying something she could tell the truth by looking into his eyes. “Oh my god” Tan gets scared “you slept with him!”
“What!” Tan stands up
“Tan-“
“STOP!” He barks “don’t say stupid shit like that”
“Tan be honest”
“You don’t know what you’re talking about!” They start to raise their voices at each other
“BE HONEST!” Lin screams “that’s why you’re pretending! He was here Tan, in our school and you could’ve easily told us he worked for your dad but you just pretended like you didn’t know the guy.”
“Stay away from me” he grabs his bag to leave but Lin rushes getting in front of him “move Lin”
“What’s wrong with you?” She stares as tears crown in his eyes “you can’t even admit it”
Unable to hold it in any longer “FINE!” He cries “I DID IT! THAT WHAT YOU WANTED TO HEAR? WE HAVE SEX AND IT’S FUCKING AMAZING!” Lin gasps both at the revelation and who else heard it
“What?” Tan turns to see Sven’s hurt eyes “who are you talking about Tan?” He asks knowing Tan couldn’t possibly be talking about him
“Sven it’s-“
“Don’t” Sven pushes his hands away as Tan tries to grab him “I don’t want to know” he walks away.
Tan cries “damn it!”
