Childhood Crush
You were that quiet kid that got the attention of all the adults because of your exotic features. Since you were mixed, you had those beautiful gray blue eyes that everyone would compliment. You were that good looking child. I was always envious of you. I has a childhood crush on you.
I listened to all the adults praising you as food was being served from your kitchen. You were having a family party for some event I couldn’t remember for the life of me what it was. I really was happy when you invited me. Though let’s be honest, we were family friends so I was forced to go anyway. However, I didn’t mind. You were going to be there.
“Let’s sneak back to our fort near the mountains. I hate family gatherings.” You pouted and took my hand.
We ran out your house and up towards the desolate mountains where we made a fort out of sticks. It was a small little secret spot we ran away to when we wanted to play card games and watch the stars. A bonus was the fact it had a view of the beachside.
It took a few weeks to complete. We had to gather the longest and strongest sticks. We had to tie them tightly and made sure it withstood the toughest of weathers. After a bunch of failed attempts since our strength as five year olds fell quite short, our father’s helped us prepare our small little getaway.
“Hey Haru..” I said as I fiddled with my small five year old hands.
“Yeah?” You looked at me with those bright eyes.
“Promise we will always be friends?” I asked in hopes for a positive response.
“Yes…Daisuke. Forever.” You smiled.
–
We spent a lot of time at that fort. We still continued to go there even at age thirteen. Sometimes I found myself doing homework there instead of home. You would always help me out with my studies when I needed it. You were my best friend.
“Haru, I feel at home with you.” I said one evening as we watched the stars go by.
“Me too.”
“Did your mom leave again?” I asked because your father was having marital issues with your mother.
“Yeah. I think she found someone new again.” You didn’t seem happy as you presented the news to me. It must have been tough seeing your father in so much emotional pain at that age.
“I’m sorry.” I rubbed your back.
“Hmm…” I could hear you sniffling. “My dad still tries to put on a smile in front of me, but I know he’s sad. I try my best to just be there for him. I want him to be proud of me.”
“He is.” I hugged you. “He is.” I said once again.
Your father was your best friend and biggest inspiration. I see you guys do everything together. I wanted happiness for the both of you. When you were happy, I was beyond happy as well.
I never knew that your best friend was going to be the cause of your demise and failure in this thing called life.
