“Okay, girls! Circle up please!” I beckoned everyone over to me. A good majority of them looked like crap with messy eyeliner and wrecked hair buns for a Saturday morning. As they came over, they all moaned and sat down.

“Well, you guys look like shit. You all have hangovers?” I chuckled and asked them.

“The worst ones ever,” Emma said. She rubbed her face and curled up in a ball on the mat. I stood over them with my arms crossed and an amused look on my face. See? Alcohol was no one’s friend.

“Alright, alright. We’ll just chill for today then. At the very least: stretch, please.” I sat next to Taylor promptly after and looked at her with a content smile. However, she groaned and rested her head on my shoulder, burying her face in my chest.

“So you got hammered, too, last night, huh?” I asked her.

“Yes. It’s all cool, though because action took place,” Taylor said with a sly smile plastered on her face.

“So, you and Jennifer finally got around to doing something, hm?”

“Sure did,” Everyone around us started laughing lazily and fell on their backs (with a grunt, of course).

“What?” I asked in confusion.

“Don’t,” Taylor warned them.

“But, Kellin needs to know. He’s your best friend.” Hannah said with sarcasm. I wasn’t too fond of her but I didn’t hate her either.

“Shut up, Hannah,” Taylor replied.

“If one of you don’t tell me, I swear to God,” I was getting fed up with their delaying; I just wanted to know! I liked gossip from time to time and I had nothing better to do right now anyway.

“Jennifer totally threw up on Taylor because she was way too wasted. I doubt she even remembers kissing Taylor, in all honesty.” Someone shouted.

Again, everyone erupted in laughter, even me. Poor Taylor. She’d wanted Jennifer for the longest time and this is what happens when she finally gets with her? She had the absolute worst luck.

“I’m so sorry I missed that.”

“Shut upppppp.” Taylor moaned and laid herself down on the gym mat.

“It was amazing. Where did you go last night, Kellin? I missed out on you.” Sarah pouted and hugged me as she finished talking. She was so cuddly; I always enjoyed her on the team.

“Well, Vic spilled his drink on me and we got into something so I just went home afterward,” I said.

“Did he apologize?” Jennifer asked. I nodded.

“Of course, he’s rude, not barbaric.” I joked. As if it were magic, though, all of the boys’ basketball team had come into the gym.

“Hey, ladies!” Jaime called as all they entered the room. I said my hellos and watched as they all sat down on the mats with us.

“What are you guys doing?” I asked them as I rubbed my face and pouted. I know I gave the girls a day off of practice but that didn’t mean I wanted them over here. I doubted that they were in any better shape.

“Chill out, Kells, we just wanted to talk. We have a day off, I’m guessing you guys do too?” Jaime smirked.

“Yeah, we do. Enjoy the break, then.” I said nicely. I looked at the crowd of people in front of me and noticed Vic picking at his nails and looking bored. I sat next to him and started a conversation.

“So, Vic, when are you taking me shopping?” I smiled widely and he laughed in my face.

“Never sounds good to me.” He cocked his head to the side to look at me with a look full of attitude.

“But not to me; I’ll be ready for the mall at two,” I smirked. He shook his head and went to say something but I cut him off before he could get a word out. “Don’t say anything,”

“I can’t stand you.” He rolled his eyes and got up promptly to exit the gym. No one paid much of a mind to him and not much changed when he left but I did feel a bit bored despite all of my friends being in one place.

As told, Vic came to pick me up for the mall at two but it was obvious he didn’t want to pick me up.

“Thanks, Vic. You’re the greatest!” I said with sarcasm dripping from my voice. He chuckled and opened the car door for me. The drive over wasn’t as quiet as I thought it would be and, surprisingly, we were inside and almost ready to leave.

“Hurry up so I can pay for this last thing and get you back home,” Vic complained. This was the third store we’d been into that I found countless things to get. Of course, I only chose a few.

“What’s the rush?” I sassed. I saw him smile from the corner of my eye but I ignored it. I was quite shocked by his silence and cooperation though.

“No back talk, no resistance, no tough guy act?” I asked as I flipped through random shirts on the rack of the store.

“Nope.” He replied casually. He was just watching me shop and looking at different clothes with me. It was weird but it felt normal almost.

“You sick or something, Vic?” I asked in frustration.

“No, why?” He looked at me with furrowed brows and squinted eyes and, I had to admit, he looked a little cute all confused like that.

“Well, usually you’d say something rude to me. In fact, I’m still surprised you’re even shopping with me,”

“I’m sorry I’m so rude all the time.” He said plainly but I could tell he meant it from his tone. It was sincere. I looked at him with squinted eyes as I walked over to the register and waited in line.

“I can’t figure you out,” I thought aloud.

“What?” Vic spoke up but I dismissed him. I stood by what I said, though. Vic was hard to figure out and I don’t think I’d find out anytime soon.

“So are you happy now that you have new clothes or what?” Vic asked me as he put his wallet away. It took me a second to adjust to the fact that he’d already paid and was carrying my bags out of the store.

“Y-yeah. Thanks,” I said. I was still deep in thought the entire time we walked out. Vic tried countless times to make conversation with me but I didn’t invest too much thought into what he was saying. When we got in the car, though, that was when I really paid attention.

“Okay, what’s the issue?” Vic asked me. My eyes snapped toward him as his endearing brown ones stared into mine.

“You!” I said with frustration. He told me to explain and I tried my very best to. “One minute you’re an asshole to me and the next you’re willingly buying me clothes; something so unexpected that God wouldn’t have planned it… Why?” I wondered.

“Why what?” Vic pressed on. He got closer to me and continued to listen fully.

“Why do you choose to be so terrible to me?” Vic looked away when I said it. His cheeks seemed to heat up but he turned so quickly I couldn’t get a good look. Without answering, Vic started the car and backed out of the parking space.

“My mom wants to see you.” He said under his breath. “You’re coming home with me.”

“Hello, Mrs. Fuentes!” I greeted as I threw my arms in the air and smiled big for the woman who welcomed me into her kitchen with open arms.

“Kellin! I missed you!” She said with a smile for seven plastered on her face.

“Hey, ma. Glad to see you’re cooking for me.” Vic chuckled as he walked into the room.

“Oh, hush, Vic. You can eat when Kellin and everyone eats.” His mom retorted.

“Yeah, Vic. Hush.” I sassed. “But, no, that’s okay. I don’t have to stay for dinner.”

“Kellin, you have to!” She insisted. There was no use arguing so I accepted and moved on. “You look great! How are your parents?” Vivan asked as Vic sighed and sat down at the kitchen table. He flipped through his phone in utter boredom but his mom and I continued to talk despite.

“Your mom loves me,” I commented to Vic after a while of catching up. I sat next to him and nudged him. He put his phone away and looked at me with raised eyebrows.

“Thanks for the clothes, again.”

“No problem.”

The rest of the night went well. Which was surprising because I hadn’t hung out with Vic like this, so civilly, since I was at least eight.

He wasn’t too bad, I knew that. I still wondered why he was so awful to me, though.
