Feeling the wind carry my short, freshly dyed hair through the air as I cradled into my base’s arms always made me feel good.

It was like I was on top of the world; a true natural high and I loved it almost as much as the routines that followed soon after.

“Let’s go, Breakers!” I shouted with the rest of the girls as we finished up the routine. It was a quick one but just as effective as the other ones had been and our team took the lead in the game once and for all.

The crowd loved us — our school. But, of course, what was there that they couldn’t like? While there were plenty of cocky attitudes, mine included, we delivered wins left and right and didn’t rest until championships.

The bond between all season teammates made it that much enjoyable, too. Hell, even the players interacted with the cheerleaders in a positive way; we all were friends. Although, Vic Fuentes was the exception.

Vic and I weren’t on the greatest of terms, truth be told. Despite knowing each other since we were in diapers, Vic was the furthest from my friend. His arrogance and my attitude didn’t mix well at times (more than I could count) and “disputes” have had to be settled in the past. It was always hot and cold with Vic, though, no matter what. I couldn’t ever tell where he and I stood; did we hate each other? Did we tolerate each other? I had no clue these days. Regardless (and sadly), he was an asset to our team’s record and companionship meaning he was an asset for us.

In no time, everyone from the stands went into an uproar as Vic made the last second shot of the game, finishing with a win of 36-25. The hype didn’t cool down, though, until everyone was in their respected locker rooms and talking about what to do next since the night clearly wasn’t over yet.

“Hey, Kell. You going to Tyler’s party tonight?” Taylor asked me. She was one of our best cheerers and my closest friend.

“Yeah, I don’t mind. I have to change, though.” I said while I gathered my remaining things and slung the bag over my shoulder. Taylor followed me close behind as we continued to speak.

“Great! I’ll go with you.”

We made our way out the school and to my car so I could get ready. I wanted out of that uniform so badly today. Don’t get me wrong, the skirt was cute and I looked damn good in it, but I’d been wearing it all day and after a while, I start to feel icky in it.

“I’m so excited for this party.” Taylor squealed. I only laughed at her and asked why teasingly. Of course, I knew the answer already.

“I don’t know. I just am, you know?” She was so transparent.

“Mhm, I hear Jennifer is going.” I sassed back to her. She’s had a crush on her for the longest time and I wouldn’t be surprised to hear Taylor admit it. I don’t understand what’s been taking her so long to just ask her out, though.

“She is? I never knew. Maybe I’ll say something to her when we get there.” Taylor thought to herself; she was a mess.

It didn’t take long for us to get to my house and, together, we were entering my room in no time.

“I want to look relatively nice at this party,” I commented. The statement was more for myself but saying it aloud made it official, I felt like. Plus, it gave Taylor something to do and sped the process of dressing along. Knowing me, I would have taken years to decide.

“Oo and just who are you dressing up for?” Taylor mocked me.

“No one, just want to look nice for once.” I fibbed. “Comfortable and nice,” It wasn’t anyone I wanted, just myself. Taylor sighed and looked at me with a tired look.

“It’s not Austin, is it? You’re better than that.” She warned, knowing that Austin and I had an on and off relationship for a year or so. There was constant cheating and the relationship was toxic throughout. It started ungenuine, too, actually; it made me upset I was so naive to be with him for so long, honestly.

“It’s definitely not for Austin.” I waved off. “I just haven’t been feeling myself and I want to look nice as a way to boost my spirits,” I explained with a smile as I flipped through clothing.

“Aw! Kelly! Okay here.” She picked out a semi-revealing outfit but it was still appropriate (as it could be). Quickly, I put it on and finished getting ready.

Around ten we arrived at the party while everyone was there already for what looked like an hour or so. A good amount of people were drunk but that’s what made it entertaining.

“I’m gonna go get a drink, you go find your girl, Jennifer.” I winked at Tay. She smiled at me and went off on her own, me doing the same.

I wasn’t much of a drinker. The aftertaste was unbearable and unappealing so I settled for some punch and walked around for a bit, saying hi to those that knew me and vice versa.

“Oh, h-hey Kellin. You made it.” One player, Tyler, said to me. He was shit drunk with three hours in and his girlfriend was helping him get around.

“I-I’ll see you later.” He slurred. “Have fun!” I nodded with a smile and looked at Sabrina who seemed more concerned than anything.

“Sorry. Later, Kellin.” Sabrina said and tried her best to get Tyler up the stairs. I chuckled to myself and turned around to get another drink. Well, I tried my best but someone had bumped into me and spilled their drink all over my clothes.

“Shit, I’m sorry!” They yelled. I looked down at my clothes that were now littered with whatever he had in his cup and sighed.

“It’s fine, whatever,” I said rubbing the cloth. There was really no salvaging the clothes now, honestly. It was ruined but that wasn’t a big deal.

“Aw, man, Kellin. I am sorry about what happened but you shouldn’t have been in the way.” Vic said. I let out a sigh of disapproval and rolled my eyes with ease. I was ready to go home by now; the fun was over.

“Don’t be an asshole, Vic.”

“Hard not to be to you.” He commented. We were practically yelling to each other from how loud the music was but, truth be told, I could hear him just fine.

“Why is that?” I wondered.

“Because you’re you,”

“You know, I think you have a crush on me.” I teased. I really just wanted to annoy him.

“Yeah, nice one.” He laughed at my mention and looked away from me stubbornly.

“Yeah, that’s why you’re so rude to me, right? It makes sense.” Vic turned his attention to me again and gave me a dumb look like I was crazy.

“Not in the slightest.” Vic chuckled. “Don’t be stupid, stupid.”

“Take it back,” I demanded. I hated being called stupid, especially by Vic. It made me feel like he was telling the truth but I knew it was the opposite.

“No,” He crossed his arms.

“Then you owe me.” Vic looked at me expectantly like he wanted me to go on but I didn’t have anything in mind yet. I wouldn’t let him call a bluff, though.

“Sure I do.” He scoffed and I smirked.

“Take me shopping, then.” Again, I received the same look; I stood my ground.

“Yeah?” He challenged. “Never in a million years.”

“You’ll regret it. Don’t forget I know your family, Vic. Don’t make me go to the woman herself.” I laughed at myself, honestly, but I knew how much of a momma’s boy Vic was. If he were to upset his mother, he’d be devastated. Vic looked at me with annoyance and it was then that I knew I had “won”.

“If I take you shopping, don’t you dare talk to my mom,” Vic said in a whisper as he got close to me. His scent hit me quickly but my heart beat harder for a second afterward.

“Then do we have a deal, sir?” I held out my hand for Vic to shake; he looked at it and looked back in my eyes icily.

“Fine…” He said under his breath.

“I’m sorry?” I questioned, acting like I couldn’t hear him but he began to walk away.

“You heard what I fucking said.” I heard as he disappeared into crowds of people with ease. I laughed to myself and counted it as a personal win. Shopping was a pathetic thing to hold over Vic’s head but it was the only thing I could think of at the moment.

On the bright side, it was one of my favorite things to do especially when it wasn’t my money that was being spent.
