“Come on Liam!” Paul yells and Liam groans.

“I’m tired.”

Paul just shakes his head, before throwing a knife at Liam. Liam dodges it right before it cuts his face. He glares at his caretaker, before plopping down to the ground grabbing his almost empty water bottle.

“We have to keep going.” Paul sighs, staring down at Liam.

“Can I just take a break? Maybe a little nap.”

“You know we need to train.”

“I know. I just need a tiny break.” Liam stands from the ground and Paul nods.

“Fine.”

The two walk back in the house. Liam tosses his used towel in the laundry room and takes a seat on a stool in the kitchen. Paul reaches in the fridge for two water bottles. One for himself and the other for Liam.

“So who was the human you were talking to yesterday?” Paul cocks an eyebrow and Liam shrugs.

“This guy named Zayn.”

“And are his intentions good?”

“I assume so.” Liam avoids Paul’s eyes as he answers.

“You assume so? Liam did you not…”

“No I didn’t read his mind Paul.” The boy sighs and Paul scolds him.

“You should not keep company with people you do not know.”

“I didn’t need to read his mind Paul. He wears his emotions on his sleeve honestly.”

“Liam, you need to be careful.” Paul shakes his head and Liam nods.

“I know.”

“I want you to keep your distance from him.”

“Well that’s going to be kind of hard seeing that he and I are hanging out tonight.” Liam finishes his water, while walking up to his room.

Paul follows him and glares at him. “And when were you going to ask me about hanging out with this human?”

“I didn’t know I needed to.” Liam shrugs, looking through his dresser for clothes to wear out. “Besides, I’m supposed to be a human teenager. And most human teenagers hang out with other human teenagers. Right?” He asks facing Paul, who lets out an annoyed sigh.

“Alright. But you must be home by eleven. Any later and I will… ground you.”

Liam chuckles but nods at Paul’s words. Paul walks out of his room and closes the door behind himself. Liam finishes finding what he’s wearing and changes. It doesn’t take him long to get ready. He walks out of his room and down the stairs to see Paul staring at something. He walks up behind his caretaker and see’s him looking at a chest.

“What is that?” Liam speaks causing Paul to jump out of fright.

“Something we will look at later. Here are the keys. Be safe.”

“Paul, I think you tend to forget I’m a super powerful alien at times.” Liam laughs and Paul does the same.

Liam walks out the house and to the car. Luckily he has a GPS system or he’s pretty sure he would have gotten lost on where he was supposed to meet Zayn. When he arrives at Forster Square Shopping Park he finds a parking spot and gets out the car, making sure he locks it. Zayn told him to meet him at some coffee shop called Costa Coffee. Liam walks along the sidewalk avoiding the stares of some of the other shoppers.

He finally finds the coffee shop and enters. The smell of coffee and pastries hits his nose instantly, making him slightly nauseous. He doesn’t like coffee. Never really has, actually. And the smell has always irritated his nose even when he was younger.

“Liam!” He hears someone and looks over to see Zayn already seated, with a drink on the table.

Liam nods and walks over to Zayn, with his hands in his pockets. He just stands by a seat staring at Zayn, who only chuckles and motions for Liam to sit down. Liam pulls the chair out and sits across from Zayn, awkwardly. He stares at Zayn’s coffee drink, causing Zayn to follow his gaze.

“Oh, I’m sorry. I didn’t really know what you would want. I should have waited until you got here to order.” Zayn speaks hurriedly and Liam, looks up at him.

“I don’t drink coffee.” He speaks flatly and Zayn nods.

“Right… So why did you agree to come to a coffee shop with me?”

“Because you asked.” And even though Liam is just being honest, Zayn smiles and looks down at his drink, before looking back up at Liam.

“They have like food here if you’re hungry or anything.”

“I’m fine. Honestly.” Liam gives a half smile and Zayn takes a sip of his drink nodding.

“How did you like your first day at school?”

“It was alright I guess.” Liam shrugs, placing his hands on the table.

“And how are you liking Bradford?”

“It’s small.” Liam’s voice is soft and Zayn grins. “And there’s a lot of gossip.”

“Yeah. The sad part about being a somewhat small town, people can’t seem to keep there mouths shut.”

Liam chuckles and Zayn does the same.

“How do you like it here?” Liam asks truly curious about what it’s like living somewhere consistently.

“I don’t know. I mean it’s home. I’ve always lived here. Born and raised. But sometimes I wonder what else is out there. You know? The world is huge and I know there’s so much more than just this small town.”

“That’s understandable.” Liam speaks playing with his thumbs.

“What about you? How was it, moving from your old town to here? Did you leave a lot of friends behind?”

Liam locks eyes with Zayn, and bites his upper lip. There it goes again. That feeling of wanting to tell the truth but knowing he can’t. He feels like they make it look so easy on the television to come up with lies on the spot. Then he remembers his life isn’t scripted.

“Well I uh move a lot. Paul… my uh uncle, his job forces us to move around. And I didn’t really have any friends at my last school.”

“Oh. That sucks. I would have just assumed you would have a lot of friends.” Zayn smiles and Liam eyes him confused.

“Why?”

Zayn coughs and looks back down at his mug. Liam doesn’t take his eyes off the other boy, honestly confused by his last statement. Most people think of him as a freak. So why would he have friends? Does Zayn not see that he’s off? Liam ponders all these things, until Zayn looks back up at him through his lashes.

“Do you want to get out of here?” Zayn asks already standing and Liam awkwardly agrees.

“Sure.”

The two walk out of the coffee shop and onto the sidewalk. They just walk, with Zayn filling any silence with talking. He talks about school. The clubs he’s in and the activities he likes, like spray painting (even though his mother hates it). And he talks about what he wants to do when he gets older. And how he loves his friends and home but can’t wait to leave it all behind, and Liam just nods along.

He loves listening to Zayn talk. It’s different hearing someone else talk to him for a change other than Paul. He’s not used to it. So when Zayn stops talking Liam stops walking, looking at the slightly shorter boy.

“I’m sorry. I’ve just been going on about my life.”

“It’s fine.” Liam smiles, because it is. He enjoys listening to Zayn’s life and how different it is from his.

“You don’t talk much do you?”

“I’ve never really had people talk to me before.” Liam shrugs and a sad look passes Zayn’s face.

“You’re different.”

And there are the words Liam was waiting to hear. He knew this night was going to well. He knew Zayn would figure out what everyone else does. That Liam’s a freak. That he’s odd. And that will make Zayn stop talking to him. Liam just stares at Zayn, trying to conceal his hurt feelings with a blank look.

“Not in a bad way.” Zayn speaks quickly and Liam slowly nods. “It’s just… I feel like there’s more to you than meets the eye… Fuck that was lame wasn’t it?” Zayn laughs and Liam slightly smiles.

“I don’t think it was lame.”

“See, different.” Zayn smirks and takes Liam’s hand in his, using his free hand to run over Liam’s tattoo’s. “You have so many.” He whispers.

“Yeah.” Liam lets out a shaky breath because of Zayn’s touch.

“Why?”

“To cover my marks.” Liam whispers, and it’s the truth.

He did get all his tattoos along his arm to cover his marks that appear when he gets a new power. It helps him blend easier. Well not easier but it makes him look less awkward with random marking along his arms. Some small and some large. The tattoos just blend everything together.

Zayn turns Liam’s arm over and runs his fingers lightly along each tattoo, taking each in individually. Liam just watches him. Watches how Zayn traces each design with his fingertips, starting with his left arm before moving to his right. It feels good. Feels right. Zayn stops tracing Liam’s tattoos and looks up at him with wide eyes and a blush on his cheeks.

“I’m sorry.” He speaks fast and Liam nods.

“You apologize a lot. Did you know that?”

Zayn snorts. “I guess I do now.”

Liam looks at his watch and groans. He looks back up at Zayn and sighs.

“I have to get home.”

“Yeah, me too.” Zayn smiles.

“I had fun tonight Zayn.”

“We should do this again sometime. If you want?” Zayn rubs the back of his neck.

“Yeah. We should.”

Liam gives Zayn a quick wave, before walking towards his car. He drives back and makes it home right at ten fifty-nine. He walks through the door and sees Paul sitting on the couch.

“You’re on time.”

“I told you I would be.” Liam grins.

“How was it?”

“It was nice. He’s nice.” His voice is serious and Paul nods.

“I still want you to keep a certain distance.”

“I know Paul.” Liam rolls his eyes, before sitting next to his caretaker. “So what’s in the chest?”
