Flower Shop
Jenessi & Xero
Every year, Valentine’s Day was one of the greatest day of Xero’s life. The rush of people coming in, men desperately wanting flowers ready, the air filled with life gave him the push to continue and deliver happiness all around.
Sun shines brightly on the sky, the smell of cool air surrounding him as he walks to his shop. Early, with the awakening of the birds singing accompanied his lovely aura.
Every morning he is reminded of what his grandfather left him when he died four years ago. During high school, Xero had gotten a floral class as an elective and he immediately had fallen in love. The smell of the flowers gave him an intuition of what his future would be like.
Owning a small business would meant he had to invest his life savings just to be able to achieve his dreams. That was his goal in life and he was determined to attain it no matter what happened.
Struggled arose, he almost changed his career path, moved to another country; in the end he stood in his ground. Life happens so quickly that you need to hold yourself into something so that you don’t lose sight of who you are and what you want to become.
In the midst of finishing his career, he met the love of his life. Something else that made his heart beat. They were both going to be florist. They had visions. Soon enough their visions stood in tact, just something things changed. His boyfriend changed majors and became a preschool teacher. From that career their love for growing a family changed. Their vision on that idea hasn’t changed either.
A small wind was picking up, and the the trees began to sway, the melody matching up with the hum of the birds. All of the other shops were verily opening up as well. Some of the owners said hi to him as he passed to his shop.
Food aroma mixed with the smell of the animals made a weird combination. People would either come to eat the tastiest pizza in town or come visit the adoption center for puppies.
From time to time he would go there before opening his shop to look at the new arrivals that he for sure knew were not gonna be there the very next morning.
For some time he thought of adopting one for his boyfriend who loved animals. But because their apartment is small they didn’t want to have their pet not have the freedom of walking outside or enjoying the natural air of the environment outside.
Sadly, he decided not to buy a puppy he had been eying for a while. It broke his heart. He really did want a puppy. The good thing is that they wouldn’t live in that apartment so whenever they decide to leave, it would be for certain that Xero would buy a dog for the both of them to give lots of love and cuddles.
Right next to his building there was already a clientele forming up a line and patiently waiting for his arrival. Quickly he snapped out of his thoughts, and attentive decisions that sometimes gnaw him persistently in his brain.
Fishing for his keys on his duffel bag, he tells everyone good morning. Xero finds his keys, and takes them out as everyone in the line chants ‘good morning’ to him.
A thin, smile lines on his face and stays there until he goes around the shop and to the back where he will open so that he can get everything ready before the clientele begin to get fussy.
“Hey, Thana, you forget the keys?” Xero’s smile turns into a grin as he side ways hugs the girl in front of her, her face intermingled with melancholy and a playful grin.
Thana is from pakistaní decent. Her parents were born in America, but she knew two languages spoken over there, including English. He had met her in class one day. She was talking Punjabi with one of her guy friends when he saw her. At that time he was learning about Pakistan in one of his classes so he wanted to know what language she was talking so then talked to her. Soon they both became friends and he shared his vision of owning a flower shop.
Three years later they are co-owners of the shop he invested with the money that his father left him on his will.
“I told Omar I was coming here late so he told me don’t worry, I’ll open. Turns out he was stuck in traffic and he’s the one that has the keys,” she raises her voice in frustration, her curls moving as she shakes her head.
“I don’t know why you trust him, Thana? He’s super late all the time and I trust you to open.” Xero drops his bag on one of the counters and walks around to make sure everything is good. Last night he tried his best to make all the flower arrangements and even made them to look unique this year.
“I don’t know why you don’t fire him? He’s so stuck up. I bet if we hire someone better, we would have so much more customers than just Valentine’s Day,” she comments, picking one of the flowers that were in one of the buckets and starts arranging it to perfection.
“Because he is really good with making flower bouquets, and he covers my shifts when I can’t come. He’s late, yes. As well as very committed and organized. Just try to get along, my dear, and don’t fight,” he sternly tells her.
Sometimes Xero wants to slap some sense into this girl. She’s very feisty, and sassy which at times annoys him. Yet she’s very likable and the customers love her. Most of the time he’s at the back of the shop cutting some flowers and making them into bouquets while she’s at the register, a smile brightening someone’s face.
Without them he wouldn’t be able to run this shop. They are both talented and even with their distinct personalities, can still work together and bring beautiful ideas come to life.
Thana twists her lips to the side in disagreement. She takes her Jean jacket off and gathers her hair into her fist where she then ties her hair into a low ponytail.
“Let’s get ready to work boss,” she says with excitement.
“Let’s save the butts of all the people who forgot to give their significant others a Valentine’s gift and now they’re in a rush,” Xero giggles at the people with worry faces in the long lines. If only they had remembered this important day for love.
After Xero opened the door, one by one the customers began to fill the shop as they looked around, decided whether to chose one that their partner would love the best.
This time he was behind the register. He had the opportunity to hear stories told quickly and got to speak about the flowers that they were buying.
Omar came half an hour later and with the help of Thana, they both made bouquets as fast as they could. Much later the customers became less, and they had time to relax.
He was drinking his water bottle and looking at one of the flowers inside the glass door when he recalls one of the customers telling him that he was going to propose on this day to his very beautiful girlfriend of three years.
Xero was also waiting, not to propose, but to marry his boyfriend. He had proposed last year but they hadn’t discussed the wedding details, not even decided on when they wanted to get married.
In some aspect he was kind of scared. What if he proposed to marry soon and his boyfriend, Jenissi said no? That they still have to wait. That would break him so bad. The chances that he would say no are less yet that thought still lingers.
All of these people are either celebrating their young relationship or taking to the next level. Which ever it was, they all had one thing in common: their love for their partner.
Xero’s heart would get warmer as the shop almost cleared all the bouquets they had made last night. Truly this was the day to claim love from their significant other, and not just couples, but for friendship as well.
A reservation on his name had been made really early the day before due to how fast it gets full. Xero had been so excited. It would be their first time going to a fancy restaurant. Xero hoped that Jenissi would love it. They rarely go because they love being with each other home, cuddling or watching a movie at the movie theater and then discussing it afterwards.
“I made some a flower bouquet for you to give to Jenissi. It’s a periwinkle. When I went to buy flowers, they guy had these and I instantly knew they were for Jenissi,” Thana says, holding a bouquet of periwinkles, together with two green leaves at the side, hold together by a brown string.
“Woah, they’re beautiful! We should buy periwinkles. I’m pretty sure they’ll sell very good,” Xero, gushes with astonishment and delight. They even smelled good.
With the periwinkles in hand, he begins to get excited for his date with his husband. Jenissi will surely love this bouquet. He loves flowers so much that he knows this one will break him into a smile.
“What about your date with your girl?” Xero places the bouquet as gently as he can on the table next to him and then leans himself on the counter.
Thana had been dating this one girl for three weeks. Xero had never met her, though he’s sure she’s lovely as Thana says she is.
“I dumped her,” she flatly days.
Or not.
“Why did you dump her this time?” Thana had gotten used to dumping girls whenever she found something she didn’t like about them. Xero found that cruel of her to do. It wasn’t his business so he kept his mouth shut.
“She party’s too much. Even more than me. I want a relationship like you guys, adventurous, at the same time calm and warming. None of these girls have those qualities,” she sighs, scratching the nail polish of her pinky.
“You will find yourself a love like ours. Unique, I’m sure. You just have to stay longer to find out. What if you call her back and hang out this Valentine’s as friends. Maybe a real spark will fly this time,”he suggests, getting ready to charge a customer.
“I don’t know,” she rejects the suggestion, slowly walking back to where Omar was currently working on a bouquet that a customer had specifically order, but somehow had not been done the day before.
Worry stood there on his face as he realized that he was getting late to his date. People kept coming, which he thought he would be over before lunch started. Each year he did that. He would close early to be with Jenissi. Except today, he thinks. People kept swarming in, asking for bouquets.
Thana and Omar told him to leave that they would take care of it. Against the idea, he instead kept working. He knew he should’ve took the offer. The thing was he never let them close without him. He had to make sure everything was alright before he closed. And it wasn’t because he didn’t trust them. Of course he did. If he didn’t then they wouldn’t be working with him right now. Xero did it for his conscious to be alright. He didn’t like when he didn’t know if he left his shop in good hands.
One hour passed. Two hours passed. Xero felt guilty. It was almost closing time. Jenissi had messaged him asking if he was still at the shop. He replied yes, with butterflies attacking his stomach. One thing that Jenissi hated was lateness so Xero repulse the idea of having Jenissi being mad at him.
At closing hour, Xero verily said his goodbyes to Omar and Thana before he grabbed the flowers, tote bag, and rushed outside to get to his car that was parked two blocks away because he couldn’t find parking.
As he rushes out he notices Jenissi leaning on his car, a bouquet of flowers by his side. Confuse, he jogs up to him.
Once he’s close he realizes what type of flowers Jenissi has: his favorite, Chrysanthemums. This plant had a variety of different colors. His favorite Chrysanthemums are colored white with green in the middle which Jenissi had in his hand.
“You bought me Chrysanthemums? You know I own a flower shop, right?”
Jenissi laughs, kissing the top of Xero’s nose. “I planted them in my mother’s backyard so that I can give them to you on Valentine’s Day.”
“You did? Oh my gosh, love. You made my valentines already. No need to go to dinner,” he jokes taking the bouquet from him while he hands the periwinkle bouquet to Jenissi.
“We don’t have to go. I rather cuddle with you. I had long day today,” Jenissi tells him, smelling the flowers.
“Are you sure?” Xero only made the joke, he didn’t really think that Jenissi would take it seriously. Whatever he decided, Xero wouldn’t mind. The most important thing was that they were together celebrating their day.
“Mhm. I have good news that I want to tell you in the comfort of our home.”
“What is it?” Xero raises an eyebrow at him. He wonders what it is since Jenissi won’t tell him even after they get on his car and drive home.
Twenty minutes later and they are on their bed, a soft cover on top of them, wine glasses on their hands, a box of chocolates, and their tv on with the volume low.
The lights were dim, the curtains close, still some outside light pouring enough to demonstrate that it was still afternoon, sun down not even begun.
Jenissi had his head placed on a pillow besides the head of Xero. He took a bite of a white chocolate and then spoke with sweetness, and with softness that could either be approached as alarming. But Jenissi’s face was relaxed, a twinkle on his eyes.
“I know we haven’t gotten married yet, but you know how I really want kids so I, uh, arranged a trip later this year so we can visit an orphanage in India.”
“You really want to adopt a kid? What about your career?” Xero is careful to word the way he asks his question. This news is relatively new. He doesn’t mind adopting so soon. He just hopes that he doesn’t change his mind later career wise.
“You have no idea. But before we can adopt we have to be married.” Jenissi looks at him with eagerness, and Xero can sense Jenissi’s tense muscles.
Xero knows how important this is for him. For them. He might not be ready but a parent is never ready. Jenissi’s eyes hold desperation and curiousness, as well as patience.
“We can get married before we visit the orphanage. I’m more than ready to marry you. At first I thought you wanted to wait, but now i know that we’re both ready,” Xero answers truthfully. This man in front of him is the love of his live. He is more than ready to form a family with him. Getting married and starting a family is the final step into their relationship.
“Really?” Jenissi’s face brightens up, his hands squishing his face so that his lips are puckering. Jenissi pecks his lips over and over again. ” I love you so much.”
Smiling, Xero lays back down and pulls Jenissi on top of him. From his view, Jenissi was breathtaking. His hair was messy, his over sized shirt hanging loose from one of the shoulders, exposing his tan skin.
“I love you more than anything.” Xero reaches up to Jenissi and kisses him. Jenissi wraps his arms around him and lightly traces his kisses over from his neck to his exposed chest.
Delightful and happy, Jenissi runs his hands on his head and smirks while pushing him to the bed and then clashing his lips with him. In the span of several seconds, Jenissi has taken his shirt off and his hands opt to the hem of his black sports shorts.
“Happy Valentine’s Day Love,” Jenissi roughly says, his voice getting lower and sexier as he takes his shorts off and begins to pleasure him where Xero’s body goes to paradise.
