” It’s almost the same dream every time but it just…” He brought his hand up from beside his thigh to wipe the tear that had managed to escape his eye. ” It just gets worse every time.” He sniffled.
Karen carded her hand through his hair untangling the knots as gently as possible. She had been coming to fetch him for dinner when she heard his scream. Another nightmare, he had told him when he was coherent enough. Now with his head in her lap, laying on the couch, he was telling her exactly what it was about.
Karen was aware of how attachments worked but never in the forty years she had lived had she ever witnessed something like this. From the very beginning, it was very different from the other cases and with time it only grew stranger. Liam could sense Zayn and vice versa. They could even feel each other’s distress at times. It only led them to believe that they were destined for each other. But the future held something completely different. Liam and Zayn weren’t mated to each other, instead, they were caught up in a strange attachment which only caused problems for the both of them. At first, they thought everything would be fine and the attachment bond would dim under the mate bond but what happened was actually quite the opposite. Every day their feelings for each other only grew and no matter how much distance they maintained from each other they were always together in their minds and most importantly, their hearts.
” He’s hurting, mum. I don’t want to hurt him.” Another sob separated itself from Liam’s chest. Karen sighed.
” I know, baby. I know.” It wasn’t the most comforting thing she had ever said to someone but it was the only thing she could offer. What was she supposed to say? Is it fine? That he wasn’t hurting Zayn? She was not much of a liar. Instead, she just let him relieve himself of the emotions that were putting him in a terrible state of mind.
Her hand stopped moving as she heard heavy footsteps fairly close to where they were. Liam sniffled swallowing the ever growing lump in his throat. He didn’t want to be seen in his current state. After all, It wasn’t very Alpha-like to be bawling your eyes out with your head rested on your mother’s lap. But moving felt like too big of a task right now.
” Liam you stupid stupid…mama Luna, I’m sorry I didn’t see you there.” Fortunately for him, it was just Louis. A very irritated looking Louis, though. Liam got himself into a semi-sitting position and rubbed his eyes rather harshly. Louis’ had a polite smile on his face but his eyes were blazing with anger.
” Welcome back beta Louis. How was your journey?” Karen asked.
” It was fine. Everything went well.” Louis’ tone was assuring. He shifted his gaze towards his alpha and as soon as their eyes met all the anger left his eyes.
” I’ll see if I can get you lads some late dinner.” Both the boys hummed. Louis’ eyes hadn’t left Liam. The latter could almost see the question dancing on his lips. His friend wasn’t the most patient person ever and it should actually be considered an achievement that he didn’t start the interrogation with Luna Karen still in the room.
” What the hell Liam? I go for a month and this is what I come back to?” He started pacing around the room. ” The first greeting I get is Mama Trisha shouting at her mate.” Liam’s gaze followed him as he turned and started walking towards the opposite side. He wanted to ask why but his lips didn’t move. ” Then she’s shouting at me and threatening me to keep you away from Zayn.” That got to him.
” What?” It came out as a whisper. Why would she that? Why would she be shouting in the first place? It just didn’t seem like her.
” Yes and then I come to bang your head open and I can’t even do that because you’re miserable. Now I know I didn’t leave you in the best state but it was way better than this. Are you going to tell me what the hell happened or am I going to have to beat it out of you?” Louis’ voice grew louder at the end. Liam’s head started pounding. He was too exhausted for this but if he knew anything about Louis, he knew he was going to have to start talking.
” I…” His eyes started watering again. ” I don’t know.” He really didn’t.
Louis huffed before taking a seat beside his friend. ” Let’s just start with what happened today.” He placed a hand behind Liam’s back.
Liam looked up at the ceiling and sighed heavily. ” Rachel thought it was the best idea ever to appoint Zayn as her personal assistant for the ball preparations.” He scoffed. His mate wasn’t the most intelligent person ever.
Louis tilted his head a bit. ” She’s handling the ball this year?”
” Yes, apparently she needs to be well practised for next year when we appear as a mated couple.” There was so much distaste in his voice that one wouldn’t believe he was talking about his soulmate.
Louis hummed. He knew Liam wasn’t very fond of his mate but he just didn’t understand how that was possible. But then again he hadn’t found his mate yet so who was he to judge.
” Anyways mum wanted me to be there for her so that she wouldn’t feel like she had too much of a responsibility. And..” He closed his eyes. ” He’s just everywhere now. And he’s hurting. I can see it in his eyes. He…” Remembering those amber eyes he paused before saying. ” He still loves me, Lou.”
Liam opened his eyes to look at the beta. Louis had a far away look on his face. ” I figured.” He murmured.
” And I can’t take it anymore. I just can’t. The dreams keep getting worse and he’s screaming for me to save him and me…” He paused. ” I do nothing. I let him be in pain.” It’s true. He wasn’t doing anything to prevent the pain even in real life. In fact, he was the one inducing it. His heart cracked at that thought.
” Maybe you should…” Louis shrugged. ” Like stay away from him. It was working before, wasn’t it?”
Liam tipped his head back before letting out an awful whine. ” I don’t want to. Lou, I can’t. It’s not working anymore. He’s on my mind all day. And the dreams make me paranoid and I…I need to keep him in my sight just to make sure he’s fine.”
A sudden silence fell over them. Louis fidgeted with his fingers thoughtfully before saying.” So, what do you want to do?”
Liam gave him a tired look.” I can’t live without him, Lou. Every day I find myself falling deeper and deeper into the skin that isn’t mine. I am not myself without him.” His head shook in emphasis.
Louis’ eyebrows furrow.” Liam, are you saying…?” Liam nodded his head, knowing exactly what his friend had implied.
” I will reject her.” Those words were enough to send Louis into a frenzy.
He jumped off the couch and nearly ripped out his mane.” Are you out of your fucking mind?!” Liam just looked at him for a second, his face void of any emotions.
” You don’t understand…” He started to say but Louis wasn’t having any of it.
The beta threw his hands in the air before looking at Liam incredulously.” Of course, I don’t bloody understand. You will die if you reject her.” His voice had gone even shriller than it actually was.
” I will die without him,” Liam said as a matter of factly.
” No, you won’t. Li, it’s that bond. It’s twisting your mind.” Louis’ voice was adamant but his eyes were wavering.
” No. No. No.” Liam shook his head violently.” You just don’t know how I feel about him.” His hands had started shaking now.
” But she’s your mate!” Louis shouted. Liam knew his beta didn’t understand his situation after all it had been years since he had found his own mark and yet he still hadn’t found his mate. Waiting for so long made him value it far more than Liam could ever.
” I don’t even know what that word means anymore.!” Louis’ flinched as the Alpha tone seeped through Liam’s voice. It doesn’t affect him much because he is the second in command but still he’s not totally immune to it. ” I started my life dreaming about my days with my mate and it’s all I ever wanted but this is not how it’s supposed to feel like. I shouldn’t feel like my days with my mate are over, should I?” He was panting now. They just looked at each other until a sudden bang secured their attention.
It was Harry. The beta looked scared out of his wits but there was something about his expression that was off. Liam frowned as he discovered that his caretaker isn’t actually looking at him but his beta. He averted his eyes to look at Louis only to see him looking back at his beta with the same expression. It was like they were both stuck in a moment and couldn’t seem to get out of it.
Liam tried to restore his composure before addressing his caretaker. ” Harry, did you need something?” He groaned as he discovered the alpha tone wasn’t completely gone. Harry shuddered before looking at him. But what took him off guard was the screechy growl Louis let out.
” Dinner is ready, Alpha.” The curly haired boy was rubbing his chest, a smile peeking through his lips.
” You want dinner? I’m not really that hungry.” Liam’s eyes move towards Louis and surprisingly he is beaming full force. His hand is also on his chest. Strange.
‘Mates.’ His conscience yelled at him. Their marks must be on their chests, how convenient. Liam wanted to be happy for his best friend but after his experience with mates, he isn’t actually sure what to feel.
” We’ll be at the table in a few. Thankyou.” Harry nodded before walking out of the door but not before taking a not so subtle glance at his mate. Louis looked love-struck. That made Liam smile. At least he got what he wanted. ” Finally.”
” Yeah.” Louis tucked his lower lips under his teeth before squealing like a little girl in a barbie shop. ” And I’d appreciate if you won’t use that tone with him. Ever. Again.” There was a threat somewhere in that sentence but it got overpowered by the happiness.
” I’m not really in the mood for dinner, Lou. Why don’t you go ahead and have a little dinner date with your mate?” Louis’ eyes lit up at that. He skipped up to the door before stopping suddenly. Liam frowned as he watches him turn, his smile gone.
” I wanted to think like I couldn’t understand you because I didn’t actually have a mate. But even now when I have finally found him, I don’t really understand it. I mean it’s been two seconds and I’m the happiest person in the world. And I don’t know maybe it’s because I’ve never had an attachment either. But one thing I know is that you’re not thinking right, Li. Think about your parents and the pack. Everything will fall apart if their alpha dies. Do you think it would do Zayn any good if you were dead and six feet under? Do you think you’ll be able to love him from there? ” And it was like every word Louis said had rained onto Liam in form of hard bricks. He was right but Liam was too tired to accept that. ” Think about it.”
And he did.

” Ziam?” He tested it out on his tongue. ” Ziam.” A smile crossed his lips.
It was actually cute.
