Matt’s POV
I’m so stupid. I wanted to wait until tomorrow so I could make it special and ask him to be my boyfriend. That’s why I didn’t say anything the whole day. But then this guy comes along and ruins everything right as I was about to tell him. We were doing fine without him.
He asked me if I was Cy’s boyfriend, and I told him no. Then he started telling me how dumb I was to not be his boyfriend. Like I don’t know this already. He pissed me off so much, calling my Cy when we’re having cuddle time.
But… Cy has the right to choose. If he’s who Cy wants then I’ll let him have him. I should’ve told him way sooner than this. I just feel like I blew it. I should’ve kissed him then and there and told him that he was mine. I shouldn’t have left.
But here I am, on my way to his house to get all of his clothes. It was around ten o’clock when I got there, so they should be awake.
I knocked on the door, and Diane answered.
“Matthew, hi, it’s a surprise to see you here.” She told me looking behind me oddly hopeful.
“Hey uh, I came by to get all of Cy’s things.” She frowned but nodded and opened the door.
“Who’s that?” Freeman asked walking in. When he saw me he frowned as he looked around. It made me mad that he thought Cy was with me and that he didn’t like it. “Where is he?”
“He’s at my house.” He sighed in relief and I shook my head. “You’re both out of your minds I swear.”
“His bags have already been packed, they’re right here.” Diane said looking down. I looked at the two of them.
“Did you throw any of his things away?” I asked.
“No, everything that was in his room would be in the bags.” I nodded and I was about to leave but Freeman said something.
“I wish Cyrus would’ve turned out more like you. You’re a good kid and you’ve got your head on straight. You’ll be a real man. You think you can teach him a bit about that over there?” I clinched my jaw and turned around, glaring at him.
“There’s nothing wrong with Cyrus. Him being gay doesn’t make him any less of a man. In fact, he’s a real man. You, you’re absolute shit. You had a son and just dropped him, and never loved him because he was different. You disgust me. You’re weak, and you don’t deserve to even have him as a son. Either of you. You’re horrible parents and I hope you never have another kid. Cy went through so much with you two and he loved you. You two were never home and never took care of him. You missed out on a lot of great things with a great guy. You’re insane, and I hope one day you regret it. I’m not going to teach him anything. In fact, he’s been teaching me. He taught me to open my eyes, because dammit, I’m gay. I’m in love with Cyrus. I’m going to go back to my house and lay in my– our bed with him and apologize for making him mad. Because I know that he deserves the best, and he deserves to be happy. I’m going to ask him to be my boyfriend tomorrow. If he says yes, I’ll make him the happiest guy on earth, and he’ll forget about you two. And that’s what makes me a great man.” I walked out of their house with all of his bags. He didn’t have much, and that’s why I asked if they had everything.
I started on the drive back, thinking about tomorrow. Tomorrow night after all of the birthday stuff is done, I’ll ask Cy to be mine. No more waiting. I’ll put my fear to side and ask, because I don’t want to lose him. I hope he says yeah and hasn’t given up on me yet. I’ll spend everyday of my life trying to get him to forgive me if not.
I got to the house and Dad was downstairs.
“Hey, what’re you doing out so late?”
“Getting Cy’s things.” I mumbled. He frowned at me. “Cy and I kinda argued earlier. Some guy likes him and there’s a possibility he likes him too.” He sighed and shook his head.
“I hate to say we told you so. You’ll have to deal with the consequences if so. I hope he hasn’t given up on you yet. I know how much you love him.” I nodded.
“Thanks Dad.” I walked upstairs to my room and the lights and everything were off. I put Cy’s things by my desk as I entered. I climbed into the bed with him and put my arm around his waist. “I know you’re awake.” I said after a few minutes. He turned around and faced me.
“Are you still mad at me?” He whispered sounding scared.
“No, of course not. I’m not mad at you Cy, and I never was. I was mad at myself.” He started crying and I pulled him into me. “I’m sorry I yelled at you and made you think it was your fault. I didn’t mean to raise my voice at you, and I never should…”
“Why?” I sighed.
“I’ll tell you tomorrow.. Let’s just say, I don’t want anyone replacing me. A boyfriend would mean less you and me time. I don’t want to lose you… We’ll talk tomorrow, just go to sleep.”
“Where’d you go?” He asked me. I laughed a little, he can’t ever just go straight to sleep.
“To get your things, from that house.” He looked up at me confused.
“You did?” I nodded. “Thanks.” He said shyly.
“No problem. Hopefully now that you’ve got your things, you’ll feel like it’s a bit more like home. You can put your things wherever you want in here. You know I have a lot of closet space and I’ll clear out more space for you if you need it.” He scooted up and kissed my cheek softly. I grinned widely.
“You really are the sweetest guy I know… Honestly, when I’m with you I feel at home.” He scooted closer and I wrapped my arms tighter. “Someone’s going to be lucky to have you one day.”
“I think it’s you who they’ll be lucky to have. Goodnight Cy.” I want to be that lucky guy.
“Goodnight.” After a few short minutes, he was asleep. I was still grinning from him kissing my cheek. I think I’m back in the race. He still loves me, and I hope he always will.
“Damn he sleeps so heavily.” Cyrus said after poking me a few times. I wanted to roll my eyes, but of course they’re closed.
“Sweet dreams about you.” I could just imagine Cyrus rolling his eyes.
“Be quiet before you wake him up.”
“But that’s the point. To wake him up, isn’t it?” He sighed.
“Yeah, but I–” I jumped up quickly and grabbed his waist, pulling him in the bed. He shrieked in surprise at first then started laughing. “I hate you so much.” We all laughed and I shook my head.
“No you don’t.”
“Happy birthday Matt.” He and Makayla said at the same time.
“Mom and Dad told us to wake you up. They made your favorite breakfast.”
“Thanks guys.” I grinned at them. Makayla left out of the room winking at us.
“I had a present for you, honestly… Mom took it back and told me it was stupid and got you something that’s actually legit stupid. I’m sorry I can’t give you anything.” I shrugged.
“It’s fine. I’m just happy you’re here with me. That’s enough… I know my “friends” are going to be here today.. I know they don’t like you, and I really didn’t want to invite them, but Dad told me to invite the football team because he’s friends with their Dads. I’m just letting you know that you’re safe. They won’t say a thing to you, and if they do, they’ll have me to go through. They all know that. I won’t even let you out of my site today.”
“It’s your birthday, I don’t want you to be watching over me the whole time. I mean, yesterday when I said it, I mean to make sure I’m always on the same team as you. You should have fun today.”
“I will have fun. We’ll have fun together, and I’ll always stay near you.” He rolled his eyes and got up, but he was smiling.
“Come on, they’re waiting for you downstairs.” I nodded and got up, walking behind him. I might’ve looked down at his ass a few times, but not many. He’s a small guy, but he’s got a cute little ass. It’s got some shape to it and I’d love to… Never mind.
Dammit this is why I wear loose sweatpants when he comes over… Hope nothing’s too obvious down there.
Anyway, as we got downstairs, Mom and Dad were grinning at me.
“Happy Birthday honey!” Mom said running over to me and pulling me into a huge hug. I laughed and hugged her back.
“Thanks Mom.” Dad pulled me into a hug too.
“Happy Birthday son. I’m proud of the man you’ve become. So proud that I finally got your Mom to agree to that thing you wanted.” I looked between the two of them with my eyes wide.
“The thing, as in…?” She nodded.
“You’re eighteen now, and you’re responsible enough.” I grinned and Dad took the keys out of his pocket.
“It’s outside.” He handed the keys to me and I grabbed Cy’s hand and pulled him outside.
“I already know what it is, and before we get out there I’m letting you know right now, there’s no way in hell–” I stopped and put my hand on his mouth as we walked. Mom, Dad, and Makayla laughed and he glared at me.
We got outside, him trying to take my hand off his face, and me laughing at him. But my hand and my mouth dropped when I looked at it. It’s the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen. Well, second to Cy. It was a brand new blue and black Ducati street bike. I saw two helmets right by it and grinned. Fuck this is amazing.
I hugged Mom and Dad again.
“Thank you so much. Mom I know how much you didn’t want me to get one, because of all the accidents, but I won’t do anything stupid.”
“I know, trust me.” They glanced at Cy and he grinned. “We talked to Cyrus before we got it and he said he’d make sure you were well behaved.” She said and I rolled my eyes jokingly.
“Well behaved?” I asked.
“Cy’s the only one who can calm you down and the only one you listen to without arguing. If he tells you not to get hurt, you won’t.” Makayla said giggling. Cy blushed and shrugged as I stared at him in wonder. I never noticed that. Aww he’s so fucking cute when he blushes.
“Come on, let’s eat breakfast, you can ride after.” I nodded, eager to eat. Cy’s eyes widened and he ran inside.
“FOOD!” We all laughed as we followed him. Dad stopped me before we went inside.
“I know last night you were a bit out of it, since you thought Cyrus was done with you. I don’t care if you think he is, you better step up. Part of turning eighteen means you’re a man. Stop being afraid, go for it. You’ll regret it if you don’t. I see it in both of your eyes, you two need each other.”
“I know Dad… I’m taking him to the park tonight after all this is done and I’m going to ask him to be my boyfriend.” He smiled proudly at me.
“I know I don’t really have to tell you this but don’t let anyone tell you that you and Cyrus are wrong for being together. If you decide that any of those guys that come here today are picking on him, handle it however you want. I’ll always be behind you son. I love you.” I hugged him tightly and so did he to me.
“Thanks Dad, for your support. I love you too.” He pulled back and patted me on my back.
“Alright, now let’s go eat. I know Cyrus is probably mad we’re making him wait longer.” I laughed and nodded.
“Most likely.”
We got into the dining area and sure enough Cyrus was staring down at his plate and tapping his foot. I laughed and shook my head at him before sitting beside him.
“I’m sorry we held up your eating time.” He looked up at me and laughed.
“I’ll let it slide since it’s your birthday. No seriously, you two were having a father son talk, it’s okay.” He looked away, seemingly sad. It’s the father son thing, I know. I grabbed his hand from under the table and squeezed it. He looked up at me and smiled.
“Alright guys, dig in.” Mom said. It took Cy no time to start eating. Surprisingly, he didn’t let go of my hand. I expected him to let go so he could eat with two hands, like usual. But I didn’t mind. I liked having his hand in mine. It’s small, but it fits. I can’t wait until tonight. He’ll finally be mine.
“Cy, you gonna r–”
“Nope.” He said popping the p. Everyone laughed and I groaned.
“Please? I won’t go too fast.” He acted like he was thinking about it then went back to stuffing his face with eggs.
“You won’t go too fast without me, right?” I didn’t answer and he looked up at me and I groaned.
“No, but I’d rather have you on there with me.” He didn’t answer. I frowned, I’d try again when we go outside.
“The boy said no, leave him alone.” Makayla said. I rolled my eyes and saw Cy nodding beside me.
“Thank you Makayla.”
“Whatever.” I said shaking my head at them.
“You two fight like an old married couple.” Mom said. Cy blushed and put his head down and I grinned.
“If only Cyrus would marry me and ride the bike.” I said in a far away tone. He looked up at me trying to act annoyed, but he was super red. He pushed me playfully.
“Shut up.” He mumbled and everyone laughed at him.
“I guess that’s two no’s. Way to break my heart Cy.” He tried to pull his hand away from mine, but I held on. I decided to stop teasing him for now. He’s had enough.
When we finished eating, we put the plates in the sink and went outside. I pulled Cy over to the drive way with me while the others stayed at the door.
“I’m not getting on.” He said stubbornly. I frowned up at him.
“But Cy, I’ll make sure nothing happens. I wouldn’t ever let something happen to you, you know that. I know you’re scared, but you don’t have to be scared with me. I just wanted to ride it with you because well… everything’s better with you. Plus it’s my birthday and it just wouldn’t be right without you.” He bit his lip and stared at me then looked away. I wasn’t trying to guilt him into riding it, I was telling the truth.
“Fine. But if you do something stupid, I’ll never ride it again.” I grinned and nodded.
“Okay, thanks Cy.” I ruffled up his hair and put the helmet on his head, then put mine on. I got on the bike and he got on behind me. He held on tightly, his hands balled up on my shirt, it was like a death grip. But I wouldn’t let him get hurt. “Ready?”
He nodded and I started it up and went out the driveway.
~
“Oh come on, you know you liked it.”
“Nope, never riding again.” He told me, laughing.
“Whatever.” We walked down the stairs, people were starting to arrive for the party. I saw a few of the guys sitting in the living room.
“Hey, Matt. Happy Birthday man.” One of them called and waved me over. I was about to walk over, but I realized Cy wasn’t following. I turned and looked at him. He stood there nervously, playing with his fingers.
“Come on Cy.” He looked at me, then in the room and frowned. I sighed and walked over to him. “What did I tell you? If they say anything about you, they’re gone. I mean that. Even if it’s the whole team.” He bit his lip and nodded.
“Okay.” He mumbled. Man when he bites his lip…
He followed me in the room and we sat on the couch. It was a two seater, and he tried to sit on the other end of where I sat. I rolled my eyes and scooted closer to him so our legs were touching.
“Thanks for coming guys.” I told them.
“No problem man. We got presents, your mom said to put them on the table outside.” Louis said. Louis is one of the guys who are laid back and don’t care. He was one of the guys who never said anything about Cy.
There were three others in here, Zack, Tyler, and DJ.
Zack and Tyler were eying Cy, and I think he noticed because he was fidgeting.
“You guys have a problem with him?” They looked at me and I glared at them.
“Well, I–” Zack started but DJ interrupted him.
“No. We don’t have a problem with him.” He glared at Zack and then smiled at me.
“Great. Because if anyone does, they can leave.” I said directly to Zack.
Soon everyone was here, so we started with the presents first. I got a lot of things, from money to a Fitbit. I was happy with everything I got, I thanked everyone and we began with the games. Since majority of the people were from the football team, other than my family members, we played football first.
Dad and my Uncle Sam were QB’s.
“Okay, I pick first since I’m older than Sam… and it’s my house.”
“You’re older than me by ten minutes!” Sam yelled defensively.
“Still older little bro. Anyway, you pick two at a time.” Sam rolled his eyes.
“Whatever man.” We all laughed.
“Obviously, I’ll take my boys. Matt and Cyrus.” We walked over to Dad’s side.
When the teams were done, we began playing. The other team got the ball first. I knew Cy didn’t want to play, but I’m glad he decided to. Uncle Sam’s team scores that possession.
Cy was right, he’s smallest, so he’s the half back. So, by default I was fullback, the person who protects the half back. Usually, when I play for school I’m the wide receiver.
Dad hiked the ball and made a long pass to Louis. Louis is usually the half back on our team, so he can catch pretty well. As soon as he did though, Zack was on him and pulled him to the ground. We’d gained a lot of yards though.
“Okay, Cyrus, you ready?” Dad asked him. He shrugged and I nodded.
“Yeah, come on.” We got in formation, Dad hiked the ball, and tossed it at Cy. He caught it and broke into a run.
I’ve said plenty of times that Cy isn’t very athletic, and he loves to eat, yet he’s small. I’d never seen Cy actually run, but today I did. I never knew he was that fast. I tried to keep up with him, but he was way faster than me. I saw Zach coming at him and I was about to charge over, but someone tackled me out of nowhere.
I jumped up as soon as I could and I saw Cy getting up and saying something to Zach. He shoved him and I immediately ran over, hearing him say, “Stupid queer, you’re lucky I didn’t knock your ass out.”
Cy might act shy, but once he’s confronted like that, he gets mad.
“How ironic is it that you called me a queer, then you mentioned my ass. What’s wrong? You want it?” He said, sounding out of breath, right as I came in between them and pushed Zach back.
“What the fuck is wrong with you?” I yelled at him.
“What’s wrong with you man!? You’re hanging out with this cock sucker all the time!” I punched him in his face and he flew back.
“Don’t fucking talk about him like that!” I felt hands on me holding me back as I went towards him. “If I ever hear you say shit about him again, I’ll beat your ass. You got lucky today. If I were you, I wouldn’t try it again.” He looked up at me holding his nose as blood spewed out.
“What, are you a faggot too now?” He asked laughing.
“Yeah, I am. Have a problem with it?” His eyes widened and his face scrunched up in disgust. “Get off my property. Now. Anyone else that has a problem with it can leave too!” I yelled. Tyler helped Zack up and they along with a few others left. Dad and Uncle Sam let go of me and I looked at Cy. “Are you okay?” He looked at me, with wonder and curiosity in his eyes. His face was red, and he looked tired.
“Yeah… thanks.” I smiled and looked at the others.
“Okay, ready to finish the game?”
~
We were now playing baseball. Cy’s actually really good at baseball. Once again, I’m shocked because he never plays.
“Watching TV can really help you learn things, I try to tell you this.” I laughed and nodded. We were sitting on the grass, waiting to bat.
“Unbelievable.” He looked up at me with a smile. He didn’t look away though.
“Matt… what was that? When we were playing–”
“Please can we talk about that later?” He sighed and nodded. “It’s not that I don’t want to talk about it Cy.. I just don’t think this is the right place to talk about that.”
“Okay. Tonight then?” I laughed.
“Of course Cy.” It was now my turn to bat. I took a practice swing then nodded to Uncle Sam, who pitched. The first one was too far left for me to hit. The second one was good, and I took a swing. I broke out into a run and got to first. I stayed there, and Cy came up to bat. I inched off the base, hoping to steal. Because I’m going to be too slow for Cy.
He pitched the ball and it was a bad pitch, but I’d already started running. Unfortunately, the catcher, my cousin, caught the ball and threw it straight to second. I slid, but was clearly out. I got up and laughed, shaking my head. I went into the dugout to watch Cy bat. This time it was a good pitch and he swung hard. The ball sailed behind second and he took off running.
“Go Cy!” I yelled as he got to first. He kept going, and I was still amazed at how fast he ran. They’d finally got to the ball when he was getting to third. He seemed to run faster, if that’s even possible, and he passed third. He went home as the ball was in the air. He slid just before Robbie, my cousin caught it. I jumped up excitedly, laughing at him. Robbie helped him up and patted his back. He doubled over, seeming to try to catch his breath. Then he stood back up, and all of a sudden he fell.
My mouth dropped and I ran over to him. Dad jogged behind me, and kneeled beside him by me. He’s a doctor.
“He’s fine, he just passed out from exhaustion.” I shook my head and laughed.
“I’m not even surprised. I’m going to take him up to the room, you guys can finish.” He nodded and laughed too. I picked Cy up, and walked off the field. I heard Mom ask Dad what was wrong as I went.
I looked down at him as I walked, his face was red and flushed. He was sweating down his face and his shirt was wet from it. I laughed, this is the most he’s done in a while, I know. While we were playing football, he was so tired and he kept stopping to sit and take breaks. He’s so cute, I can’t help but smile at this whole situation.
When we got to the house, I brought him up to our room and put him on the bed. Yep, our room.
I went to my mini fridge and got him a bottle of water. Then I sat on the bed beside him and waited for him to wake.
I pushed his hair from his face and sighed. I still don’t know why it took me so long to decide to tell him how I feel. I leaned down and kissed his forehead.
“I’m sorry Cy.”
