A BEACH IN THE OUTSKIRTS OF STAR CITY
Slade Wilson
Like all the Lance siblings, they never stay dead. Drake is no different from the curse or luck they have. Which is what brings me to the coastline in the outskirts of the city. The shipping boat that Drake and the League of Assassins were on was in the city, but with the currents Drake should end up here. I just have a feeling that he’s alive, no pure evidence. Just… hope.
I walk along the shore staring out into the morning sun rising and hear the waves crash on to the sand. I walk barefoot not minding the sand to stick to my skin, it’s what normal people do and it’s not something I like. Of course, I have to blend in, meaning combat boots to the beach is a no-go.
“Where are you bird?” I say under my breath as I begin to lose hope, but I try not to. With other people, I’d leave them behind to care for themselves but Drake is different. I know that Drake would do the same for me, regardless if I didn’t feel the way I do about him.
I look around once again, taking a peek behind me to see if he washed up behind me but no sign. I stand in the beach losing patience fast but I know he’s alive! There’s a feeling that even dragged me out here to this beach that I can’t explain. I then hear birds singing in the distance and as I do, I see two bright yellow canaries fly over me and my eyes quickly follow them and I turn quickly keeping my eyes on them flying by and suddenly, the waves crash bringing a body in.
The waves wash out and I spot a body covered in kelp. I jog towards it and get in the water as the waves begin to take the body back into the ocean. I grab on to the body and pull the man out of the waves and into the sand. I flip the unknown body over and pull the kelp off and suddenly it’s clear. It’s Drake.
A sort of energy, a warm angry energy radiates off his body and it’s contaminating. It almost makes me angry but I plug those feelings away. I check for a pulse and he’s still alive. After all this time. I need to take him to the safe house. I lift Drake’s body up and carry him into my SUV and place him in the back where he can lay down and rest himself.
_______________
CLOCKTOWER SAFE HOUSE
I lay his wet body down on my bed and rip open his shirt and as I do his chest bulges out. I see his body and it brings back the night we were together. I stop myself and begin to get serious, I need to work fast. I grab an IV bag that contains a small amount of mirakuru that is enough to heal him without killing him and turning him into me or Roy Harper. I’ve perfected the chemical into a healing solution and I keep packs of these in my fridge. It’s what keeps me so strong, balanced and an asshole.
I clean off Drake’s arm with a wipe and pierce a needle into his vein. I hold Drake’s hand and I watch the solution drain into his body and it should take minutes, maybe even sec-
Drake gasps loudly waking up almost immediately and holds my hand tight. I lift him up from the bed and he holds on to me tight and I quickly take the IV out of his stream before it does any damage to his humanity. “You’re okay, you’re okay!” I say grabbing on to his head as he’s in a small state of shock and confusion.
“He’s alive!” Drake says cutting to the point about Ollie. “Ollie is there, I broke him!” He says and I nod as he lets go of me. He gets up from the bed still breathing hard trying to catch his own breath. “I-i He told me to swim, and when he did, I saw him! He was guilty!” He says and I stand up as well and walk towards him.
“I know, that’s why we’re going to get him.” I say and he turns towards me with a small smile. “One last time, and then I’ll leave.” I tell him to make him proud and happy of me and he is. He knows I’ve come a long way, and I’ve prove my own self that I can still care for people.
