He slowly leaned forward, feeling every part of his body tremble with adrenaline. As his feet were no longer in contact with the roof edge, he could feel the fear taking over his entire being. It was one of those times when you just know you are going to die. Any trace of thought left his mind, and the only thing he was focusing on was the ground quickly approaching him. There was no past, no future, just the present. Everything was happening so fast !

As his widened eyes saw the road about to meet his face, he just knew that was it. But the impact did not come where he expected it to come from. Instead, it was softer than he would have thought, and it came from his left side.

And soon enough, he was flying.

Looking up, he couldn’t believe his eyes.

     Blaze.

Blaze as in the superhero of the town. As in Vendetta’s enemy. As in the reason Vendetta was in that situation in the first place.

The shock of almost having died seemed to influence the super-villain’s reflexes, as he was not even able to struggle against Blaze’s warm arms. He was just staring up at him, his mind blank, trying to process what was going on.

As the hero came to a stop, on the roof of another building, he shoved the villain out of his hold, who in turn stumbled and fell down. He quickly got up and turned around, facing the hero.

“What sort of twisted up plan of yours is this ?” Blaze asked with a frown on his face.

Vendetta slowly managed to process what just happened. The superhero… saved him…

“Huh ?” He replied, as confused as one could be in a situation like that.

Blaze recognized Vendetta in his super-villain appearance which consisted of : a black leather vest with a hood, black skinny jeans, army boots, leather gloves and his dark brown hair slicked down. He also used to wear eyeliner so there would be less of a chance to be recognised while showing up as a human. From his chin to below his eyes, his face was covered with an iron mask, which went all the way to the back of his head, where it was closed with a mechanism that would require pressing 3 buttons in the right order for it to lock / unlock. He was tall, slender, pale and even though he wasn’t able to fly, his agility covered that up.  It would have been impossible for the hero not to recognize him as the supervillain he was, seeing as they know -and fight- each other since they were kids. Why would the hero save him?

The more Vendetta thought about the situation, the more the smirk behind his mask was getting wider.

“You have a soft spot for me, don’t you ?” He asked, his eyes narrowing with interest. He could definitely take advantage of that.

The hero just stared at him, as he tried to search for a legit reason the villain would have done that. He thought he did that just to see if the hero did actually have a soft spot for him, or to get his attention so he could take him by surprise. Yet, he couldn’t bring himself to think Vendetta would actually risk his life for such thing.

“What’s going on… ” He had to admit that he was utterly confused. He knew Vendetta and his brother’s way of playing with people’s minds. They would have been able to take over the world any time, with their clever plans, but the only thing pulling them down would be the fact that superheroes had more power than the villains. Vendetta’s brother was in another city, and Blaze was grateful for that. One clever mind was enough to deal with. Besides, Vendetta wasn’t exactly harmless. He performed sorcery, and his weapon was a pack of steel cards. His element was darkness, while Blaze’s was fire.

Lost in his thoughts, the hero didn’t react in time to dodge the steel card quickly approaching him. It went trough Blaze’s chest, right into his heart, then started moving all around the inside of his torso. He fell on his knees, feeling his organs being cut by the sharp edge of the card, as blood escaped his lips. He lifted his hands, and moved them around his torso, trying desperately to find a way to stop the pain. All his attempts were useless, and he couldn’t even manage to scream in pain, since the pain itself was too unbearable to let him do so.

Vendetta just stared at him with cold eyes, analyzing the situation. The hero was in front of him, eyes widened and distant, blood dripping down his chin. He finally had the possibility to kill the hero. Blaze fell down, with his back against the roof, his body contracted in agony.

Stepping forward, the villain got his card back, which escaped trough the hero’s stomach, and took his lighter out. After igniting it, he threw it on Blaze, watching the fire embrace his body. As the fire started healing the hero, Blaze struggled to find his voice.

“Why – Why’d you – ” He tried, but kept stopping, as he was feeling his organs slowly linking back. It was a disturbing feeling.

“The reason I saved you is the same as the reason you saved me… ” He said, turning back.

“Unknown” The super-villain finished, then walked away.

     *snap*

Vendetta groaned in frustration as he stared at his broken pencil. His favorite one at that.

He was in his apartment, working on his newest drawing. He owned an art gallery, which used to be his father’s. When his father left him and his brother, he let Vendetta own the gallery as his brother wasn’t much interested in that sort of stuff. The gallery wasn’t that successful but his art was being sold, and there was also a section where people would buy art related stuff from. It gave the villain enough money, and was also a way for him to be spending his time. He was pretty lonely and he would more than often find himself wishing for his brother to visit him. His brother’s name was Zero, and they would communicate using telepathy. Zero was more experienced than his brother at doing evil things, and he used to share money with him. He even bought him the apartment. Vendetta was feeling bad for not being able to return the favor but he hoped one day he would make his brother proud.

The villain stared at the sketch. It was aggressively made, and you could tell how the artist’s emotion were mostly filled with anger by the way the lines were dark and just all over the place. He once again found himself drawing Blaze. It wasn’t his first drawing of his enemy, but he couldn’t help himself. He had to admit that the hero was quite photogenic, and when they would fight, he would sometimes get these perfect angles that would just look great on paper.

Blaze’s costume was something different than the typical superheroes costumes. He’d wear a rather fancy outfit, showing up in a tuxedo. Dark grey shirt, black vest, a bright red tie, black pants and formal shoes. He would wear a mask on his eyes, putting in evidence their glowing orange color and his black hair was always slicked down perfectly. He looked like he was just coming out of a masquerade. It was just his style apparently, and his body was prefect for it. He was tall, with broad shoulders, his silhouette slim yet his torso was hard as a rock.

He’s just perfect, isn’t he… Vendetta thought, as he continued drawing using another pencil. He was drawing Blaze just the way he saw him back on the roof. On the ground, looking so vulnerable and helpless. Of course, he didn’t post most of his drawings of the superhero in the gallery, he didn’t know Blaze’s human appearance and he could randomly enter the place and see all the drawings of him in situations only Vendetta would have been able to see him. The super-villain was very careful about his identity.

“Who are you talking about, dear brother ?”

Vendetta blushed deeply as he heard his brothers voice entering his mind. He seemed to have accidentally sent that thought to his brother.

“Uh… That… Um. Didn’t mean to send that.”

“Well, you did. Now enlighten me.” Zero’s calm voice replied.

Vendetta sighed. He never lied to his brother, so why start now.

     “Blaze.”

“Blaze ?”His brother asked, sounding surprised by the sudden twist in the conversation.

     “Yeah. Never mind.”

“I actually mind if you may excuse me. I am aware of the fact that you know the reason I seem to be surprised, so go ahead and explain.”

“It’s nothing, really. I was just thinking and he annoys me with his…. just… leave it … please.”

“Hm. Just remember your purpose.” Was the last thing Zero said, before once again Vendetta’s mind was only occupied by his own thoughts.

The super-villain just stared at the wall in front of him, considering hitting his head against it. That was just embarrassing. He looked down at the drawing, anger flowing trough his veins.

My purpose, huh. He thought to himself.

He got up and reached for his mask.

     Very well.
