The Monday of the following week was much the same as the previous days for Samuel. Jayden continued to avoid him and no matter how hard he tried, he couldn’t seem to find him.
He was standing by his locker on Tuesday morning with Paul when he looked up and caught sight of Jayden turning a corner. He immediately took off in that direction without an explanation to Paul but when he got there, Jayden was nowhere to be found.
He walked dejectedly back to his locker and leaned heavily on it. Paul looked at him and nodded in understanding.
‘No luck again, huh?’
Samuel shook his head. ‘None. It’s as if he just vanishes into thin air.’
They heard several high-pitched giggles and turned to see Pearl walking down the hallway with a group of her friends. She walked past without bothering to spare him a glance. He watched her go with a resigned look and let out a strained sigh.
Paul glanced at him as he removed a couple of books from his locker. ‘I’m guessing things are still strained between you guys.’
Samuel nodded. ‘I guess you can say that. It’s not her fault though, I’m the one to blame. I’ve been so distracted lately.’
‘I know it’s not my business to tell you what to do…’
Samuel glanced at his friend. ‘But?’
‘I know you are trying to fix your relationship with Jayden but maybe you should focus more on the relationship that you do have than on the one you no longer don’t.’
Samuel looked away. ‘It’s not that simple. You are lucky you are not dating anyone. Relationships are so tiring and can be such a mess.’
‘Yes, I suppose they are. However, with the right person, I heard they can be amazing.’
Samuel stared at his friend as he zipped his bag. ‘So why aren’t you dating then?’
Paul closed his locker. ‘You know why. I am a prince, I don’t have the luxury to just date anyone I want. I have a responsibility to my people and whoever I date would be to secure a strategic match not for my personal desires.’
Samuel frowned. ‘You always say that but it’s not right.’
‘It’s my duty.’
‘I’m not going to accept that.’
Paul gave him a small smile. ‘It’s not your choice. Now, how are you going to solve the Jayden problem?’
Samuel let out a heavy sigh. ‘I don’t know. Even if he has feelings for me we can still be friends, can’t we?’
Paul shrugged. ‘That’s between you both. You share a couple of classes together so why can’t you just talk to him when he’s in class?’
‘I can’t he always comes in after class starts and leaves before it even ends.’
‘Then stop him from leaving.’
Samuel shook his head. ‘I’ve tried but he always leaves before I even have the chance to get up. To stop I would need to be already…’
He stood upright. ‘Hold on. That’s it! You’ve just given me an idea. I wonder why I didn’t think about this before, I’m such an idiot.’
Paul’s features twisted up in confusion. ‘Erm, glad to help I guess. Are you gonna tell me what this plan is?’
‘No time, I have to go now.’
Paul watched as his friend placed his backpack on his shoulder and hurried off down the halls.
Samuel glanced at his watch and quickened his steps. In order for his plan to work he needed help and only one person could help him but he needed to get there before the bell went off.
Miss Alberta was sitting in her classroom and grading papers at her desk when Samuel burst in. She looked up startled and frowned as he run up to the desk.
‘I need a favour.’ His voice was breathless as he spoke.
‘No.’
Samuel paused. ‘But you don’t even know what it is.’
She steepled her fingers. ‘Fine, what is it? If you’ve come to ask me to switch partners then you’re wasting your time.’
Samuel’s brows furrowed in confusion. ‘What? No, it’s not that. It’s something else.’
She glanced at him. ‘I’m not going to give you a pass if you want to skip class either.’
Samuel shook his head. ‘It’s not that either.’
She stared curiously at him. ‘Then what?’
He bent down and whispered quickly into her ear. She frowned after he was done and stared suspiciously at him.
‘That’s a strange favour to ask. Why do you want me to do that?’
Samuel looked up as the bell went off and the students began trickling in. ‘I can’t explain now. Would you do it? Please?’
Miss Alberta stared into his earnest face for a moment before nodding with a small sigh. ‘The things I do for you people. Fine, I will.’
‘Thank you,’ Samuel stated gratefully. ‘You are the best.’
‘But I can only guarantee you five minutes.’
Samuel nodded. ‘Don’t worry, that would be enough. Thank you so much.’
‘Don’t thank me just yet. Better hope your plan works, now take your seat, class is about to start.’
Samuel smiled and took his usual seat at the middle of the row. The class was almost full when Pearl walked in but instead of taking her usual seat by him, she sat at the back with her friends, barely sparing him a glance.
As usual, Jayden walked in just as the class started and moved to sit at the far corner of the back row. Samuel kept his gaze on him the entire time but if he felt Samuel’s eyes on him, he did not acknowledge it. His features were a picture of boredom as he stared disinterestedly at the board and Samuel tore his gaze away from him just as Miss Alberta started the lesson.
The class dragged by slowly for Samuel though it was as interesting and fun as Miss Alberta’s classes always were. He kept his eyes glued to the clock the entire time as he tracked the slow progress of the minute hand and the slow ticking of the seconds until finally, the bell went off.
Before Jayden was out of his seat however, Miss Alberta called out to him. ‘Jayden could I have a moment?’
Jayden frowned and walked over as the students slowly trickled out. He raised a questioning brow at her as she shuffled through the papers on her desk.
‘I have an important letter for you. It looked as if it came from the headmistress’s office. Now, where did I put it?’
She mumbled to herself as she flipped through the papers and Jayden shuffled his feet impatiently. Soon the class was empty except for the three of them.
‘Aha! I remember now, it must have fallen outside the door. Give me just a sec.’
Before Jayden knew what was happening she rushed out of the classroom and swung the door shut after her. A soft click soon followed causing Jayden to frown. He walked to the door and tried to open it but it was no use. It was locked shut.’
He sighed heavily and turned to face Samuel who made his way slowly towards him.
Jayden’s eyes were expressionless as he stared at him. ‘I’m guessing this was your doing?’
Samuel nodded. ‘It was the only way I could think off. You didn’t give me any opportunity to talk to you.’
‘I don’t want to talk.’
‘But I do.’
Jayden looked away. ‘There’s nothing left to talk about.’
‘Dammit Jayden, why must you always be so stubborn? You don’t just kiss someone and disappear. You owe it to me.’
‘Fine.’ Jayden crossed his arms and placed his hip against the desk. ‘Talk.’
‘Why did you kiss me?’
Jayden’s features were impassive. ‘You know why.’
‘Right erm,’ Samuel struggled for something to say.
Jayden sighed. ‘This is getting us nowhere-‘
‘I watched porn,’ Samuel blurted.
Jayden raised an eyebrow in surprise. ‘Congratulations?’
‘No, no.’ Samuel rubbed his neck awkwardly. ‘It was gay porn.’
There was visible confusion on Jayden’s face. ‘I really don’t get why you’re telling me this.’
‘I was trying to figure out if I could be gay or probably bi.’
Jayden blinked in surprise. ‘Oh.’
‘Yeah, it was Cissy’s idea but honestly I found it a bit disturbing and slightly horrifying.’
‘Wait, how…’
‘I didn’t ask. I’ve learnt that with Cissy it’s best not to ask questions.’
Jayden shook his head in amusement and a small grin appeared on Samuel’s lips.
‘So now I know I’m definitely not gay or bi.’
Jayden’s smile disappeared and he nodded slowly. ‘That’s nice to know.’
Samuel began to pace in front of him. ‘Yeah, I guess it is. A few things finally make sense again, I have been worrying for nothing. But then…’
He trailed off and Jayden glanced curiously at him. ‘Then?’
Samuel stopped his pacing and bit his lips hesitantly before moving closer to lock his lips with Jayden’s in a kiss. Jayden’s lips were soft as he kissed him and this kiss felt different from their first one. Whereas the previous one was heated and passionate, this was slow and tentative.
Samuel stepped away and passed his hand over his hair as they paused for breath. Jayden touched his lips and stared at Samuel who looked apologetically at him.
‘I’m sorry I kissed you. I wanted to figure out if it would be different when we were not high from the play.’
‘And?’
Before Samuel could answer, they heard keys jingling outside in the lock. Samuel turned hurriedly to Jayden.
‘Our time is up. Promise me you would meet me up at the observatory tonight.’
The knob turned as the door slowly swung open, revealing a sorry-faced Miss Alberta.
‘Oops silly me, I must have mistakenly locked you both in here. I do hope you’d forgive me. I would give you a pass for your next class now run along. I have to prepare for my next class.’
They nodded and walked out. Samuel turned to mouth a thank you to Miss Alberta who winked and closed the door behind them.
Samuel grabbed Jayden’s arm before he could walk away. ‘Please, promise me. Tonight at the observatory.’
Jayden hesitated before nodding and Samuel let go of his arm as they parted ways to go to their next class.
Later that night, Jayden left his dorm and made his way through the woods towards the observatory. Samuel was already there waiting for him when he climbed off the ladder on the rooftop.’
Samuel turned as he walked over to stand beside him. ‘You came.’
‘I promised I would.’
‘You can’t blame me for doubting you seeing as you can be so stubborn and pig-headed sometimes.’ The anger and frustration he had felt in the past few days suddenly bubbled out. ‘Honestly, how can someone so smart be so fucking dense!’
Jayden glanced warily at him. ‘Where is this coming from? I didn’t come here to fight.’
‘You know exactly where this is coming from. I’m mad at you. In fact, I’m fucking pissed. You spend weeks ignoring and avoiding me because of some stupid decision you made by yourself without thinking to include me.’
Jayden frowned as Samuel continued on his spiel.
‘Tell me, did you ever think of how it would make me feel? You said you had to protect your feelings but did you ever think of mine?’
‘I…’
Samuel scoffed. ‘No, of course you didn’t. God, you drive me crazy. I want to hit you, I want to punch you and I want to fucking kiss you again.’
Jayden blinked. ‘Wait, what?’
Samuel didn’t answer but rather he suddenly leaned forward and pressed his lips against his, cupping his cheeks gently as he deepened the kiss.
They broke apart to catch their breath and Jayden stared up at him with surprise and confusion written all over his face.
‘I don’t understand. I thought you said you were not gay or bisexual.’
Samuel chortled. ‘I’m not.’
‘Then why…’
Samuel stepped back and ran his hand over his hair. ‘I don’t know. I wasn’t lying when I said I found those scenes disturbing and slightly horrifying. Whenever I think about doing those things with another guy it makes me feel more than a little sick but then…’
Samuel stopped and looked down awkwardly.
‘But then?’ Jayden prompted.
‘Whenever I think about doing those stuff with you I don’t feel sick at all. I found out that I wouldn’t mind doing those stuff with you. In fact, I would rather enjoy it very much.’
Jayden was stunned into silence for several seconds and the first words that came into his head after that were, ‘This is a very weird way to ask me to have sex with you.’
Samuel laughed awkwardly. ‘That’s not what I’m trying to say you idiot. I’m trying to say I have feelings for you too. I don’t understand it but every time I kiss you it feels as if there are fireworks all around us, like there are explosions going off in my brain. It feels… it feels like heaven.’
‘That’s…’
Samuel stepped closer to him. ‘I can’t stop thinking about you and these past few days without you was hell. Every time we are apart I can only think about when I will see you again and I count down the hours until I do. Every time I see something interesting, my first thought is how much I can’t wait to share that with you.’
Samuel burst out laughing. ‘Even stupid things too. Like how when I see a butterfly, I would just think ‘Jayden would probably like that though he would just glare at it and pretend he doesn’t.’
He stepped closer. ‘Or when I look at the moon, I would think, ‘It’s so beautiful but so sad just like Jayden.’ And at the moment I would wish so badly that you were by my side so I could wrap my arms around you for you to know that you are no longer alone.’
He stopped when they were just a hair’s width apart. ‘All the times we shared together; when we skipped school, when we run away from home, those have been the happiest moments of my life.’
‘I…’
‘Jayden.’
Jayden looked up. ‘Yeah?’
‘Can I kiss you?’
Blood rushed up to Jayden’s cheeks as he nodded slowly. Samuel smiled softly before pulling his chin up and leaning down to capture his mouth in a soft kiss.
‘Wait.’ Jayden pulled away. ‘We can’t do this, you have a girlfriend.’
Samuel blinked. ‘Oh right, I forgot. I’ll break up with her tomorrow, it won’t be right to continue to be with her whiles I have feelings for another person.’
Jayden nodded and turned away. ‘Sure but we can’t kiss anymore until you do. It won’t be fair to her. I may be a heartless bastard but I’m not a heartbreaker.’
Samuel gave him a disbelieving look. ‘So the stories of girls weeping uncontrollably after you spurned their affections is not true?’
Jayden shrugged. ‘It’s not my fault that they had crushes on me. I never lead them on and I was honest to them.’
Samuel shook his head and sat down. ‘What now then?’
Jayden took a seat beside him and stared up at the sky. ‘We can talk like old times.’
‘I would like that very much,’ Samuel answered with a small smile on his face.
And so the two boys sat talking into the night as they held each other’s hands under the vast tapestry of the velvet sky and the stars twinkling down on them.
