Chapter 17

~Thomas’s POV~

I was sitting in the middle of my bed with papers, highlighters and books strewn around me as I tried to study for the test we’d been told we’d be having tomorrow. I had to admit, as much as I’d wanted to finally go back to school I could have done without a chemistry test. Especially since I hated the subject so much.

I wasn’t much of a science person, reading subjects like history and literature were more my thing, but hey the Alpha wanted a well rounded Beta so I’d just have to deal with it.

We’d gotten a phone call from Jessie earlier asking us to come in for an appointment later today and she’d also given us the unfortunate news that instead of weekly sessions we’d have one every other day. I was pissed, Grady didn’t mind, no surprise there.

I honestly just wanted it to end so I could go back to being Carson’s second and while I knew that spilling my guts and telling Jessie all our personal problems was the quickest way to get that done I wasn’t comfortable with that. Our business was our business so we’d just have to find some other way to get out of this and fast.

I picked up the sheet of paper again then discarded it when all I could make out was gibberish. This was Grady’s thing not mine.

Speaking of my unhinged mate, he was still over in his room studying, but then judging from the occasional chuckles and the sound of the television coming from that direction I’d guess he hadn’t even picked up a book.

Well when you had a brain like his who needed studying right?

…………………

~Hours later~

“I just don’t get why you don’t understand this, it’s so simple, all you have to do is-”Grady was saying as he tried again to explain the topic but I cut him off when I picked up the pillow at my feet and threw it at him.

“Forget it, I give up, I’ll just somehow get through that damn test.” I told him in exasperation, then lay back on the bed.

“But then you’ll fail.” He announced.

“Wow thanks for the vote of confidence buddy.” I said rolling my eyes.

“It’s not like it’s any secret how much you suck at chemistry.” Grady said again then; “Wanna go play battlefield?” he asked, his voice hopeful.

“Oh what the heck, not like I’m learning anything anyway.” I said pushing off the bed.

Plus everyone knew video games were a healthy way to relieve stress.

~Jessie’s POV~

I scribbled some notes on my legal pad for what felt like the hundredth time this evening, then looked back at the pair before me with a bright smile.

“Okay just a few more questions then you can leave.” I told them.

Grady nodded with a smile and as expected Thomas bristled in the corner.

After the way they had behaved in our first meeting I was a bit surprised at how Grady turned out, especially considering the fact that our first meeting was yesterday.

I’d called them back in on short notice because I believed it was better to tackle the problem as frequently as possible and a week seemed too far off.  I smiled at Grady again, he genuinely seemed to be enjoying the session and I was pleased.

“Okay Thomas, what’s one talent that Grady has?” I asked next.

He looked over at his mate then back at me; “He could probably annoy a person to death.” Thomas said with a shake of his head.

Grady laughed “Yeah and he literally scares the shit outta people with one look. That’s some serious talent man.” Grady laughed and I watched in frustration as they bumped fists and sat there grinning like two fools.

“Okay guys can we at least be serious here?” I begged. They had yet to seriously answer a question I’d asked and I still hadn’t really learned a thing.

I took a deep breath and continued; “What’s one thing that annoys you about your partner?” I asked no one in particular.

“Probably just the fact that he’s annoying.” Thomas said, looking deep in thought and I glared at him. He sure knew how to give nothing away.

Grady laughed. “What’s annoying is that he never wants to party with me, the only guy I know with so much freedom and he just lets it go to waste.” Grady said with a sad shake of his head.

I chose not to respond and moved on. “Thomas what’s one physical flaw Grady has?” I asked only to have Thomas stare at me as if I’d lost a screw.

“Look at him, does it look like he has a physical flaw?” Thomas asked incredulously and I couldn’t help it I just had to laugh, these guys were hilarious I had to admit it, completely original, the most difficult patients I’d ever had but definitely hilarious.

“Alright, alright, Grady what’s one thing you do that Thomas wishes you wouldn’t do?”

“Hmm, well he hates that I’m irresponsible, does that count?” Grady asked and I nodded.

“What does he do why you think he’s irresponsible Thomas?”

“He does a lota stupid shit without thinking it through.” He answered and I noticed the tightening of his mouth and eyes as he said this and I knew I’d finally hit a tender spot in their union. Finally!

“Really now? And when was the last time he did something irresponsible?” I pushed, looking between them but when they both looked away not saying a thing I knew pushing for this bit of information at this point in time wouldn’t be wise and so I made a note to discuss it at length in another session.

“What’s the point of all these questions anyway?” Thomas asked a few minutes later.

“Well this is just a way for me to gather information and for you two to learn something new about each other. When I’ve asked all the questions I need to know we’ll discuss a few of your answers.” I answered honestly. Thomas only shrugged and Grady…well he just sat there…

“Okay guys I can tell you’re just dying to leave so just two more questions and you can go.

 Okay?”

Thomas sat up straighter looking happy at the prospect of leaving early.

“What do you think love is?” I asked, excited to hear what they’d come up with. Thomas was the first to grumble out an answer.

“A misunderstanding between two fools.” Thomas quoted then fell silent once more.

“Nah, it’s more like when a guy wakes up to every sound in the night and runs to the window to check if his car is still safe outside. Now that’s love.” Grady announced, looking pleased with himself. I stared at him incredulously.

Thomas grinned over at him but all I could think was that these two were insane, no doubt about it.

“And the last question before you go, If your house was on fire and there was only one thing you each could save what would it be?” their answers to this question would tell me a lot about their personality.

“Wow that’s a tough one, it would probably be my sketch pad, no my limited edition Jordan’s, or maybe-” Grady started but Thomas cut him off, speaking in a bored tone;

“And he’d end up being the one thing I’d save because he’d get himself killed just trying to decide what to grab.”
