Harris sits at his desk working when all of a sudden Tan’s father walks in “hey Harris got a minute?” He asks sadly sitting down not waiting for Harris to answer “I need your help with something.”
Putting his pen down Harris focuses on Scott sitting across from him “okay”
“Tanner talks to you a lot does he ever mention anything about running away from home?” Harris’s heartbeat picks up as he tries not to panic “we haven’t seen him in two days, he won’t answer his phone or texts.”
“N-no he doesn’t” Harris gets nervous “he mostly talks about you and your wife”
Sighing Scott shakes his head “I swear that kid is going to freaking kill me, he doesn’t come home Thursday night and we see him for like 10 minutes yesterday, now he’s disappeared. Not before lying to us about where he’d be. Shiela and I asked his friends and they swore they didn’t know anything, which is probably a lie since he tells them everything”
“What are you going to do?”
“I don’t know, Sheila’s freaking out so I spoke to some of my buddies at the station to keep their ears open. Tanner doesn’t even know how bad he’s making me look! District Attorney’s son runs away, do you know how that’ll look in the papers? I’ll be made into a joke!” He divulges to Harris and all the while Harris remains quiet knowing everything is his fault. “What would you do?”
“I-” as soon as Harris opens his mouth to speak his cell phone rings, taking it out of his jacket pocket he doesn’t recognize the number but he chooses to answer anyways. “I’m sorry Scott this is a client, they’ll keep calling unless I tell them I’ll call back”
“Sure I’ll wait”
Thinking that would get rid of him Harris disappointingly answers the phone “hello”
“Hey Harry” Tan’s voice answers on the other line
His eyes grow and he quickly turns away from Scott “hey I can’t talk right now I’m with my boss, I’ll see you soon” Harris says boss so Tan could take the hint
“Yeah but before you go I have to tell you one thing and you can’t get mad”
“Okay?”
“I got arrested”
Not trying to let the bomb Tan just drop phase him Harris asks “how?”
“I kind of drove one of your cars and I only have my permit, and also ran a few stop signs… I failed my road test last month you’d think I’d learn” Tan chuckles nervously trying to make a joke of the horrible situation they’re both in right now “I’m sorry.”
“No worries I’m on my way”
“That’s not the problem” Tan continues and Harris panics all over again “there’s more”
“Yes?”
“They’re kind of about to call my dad’s office as we speak”
“What!?” Harris yells shocking even Scott
“I’m a minor Harry they have to call a parent”
Harris officially starts to panic “which station?”
“The one downtown I think”
“I’ll fix it” he hangs up on Tan.
“Everything all right?” Scott asks when Harris turns back around
“No my client got arrested, I need to make some phone calls to get them out, mind if we finish this conversation later?”
“Yeah we should grab a drink later save me from going home to my bitch of a wife”
“Sure” Harris agrees to get rid of him. As soon as the door shuts behind Scott Harris calls Teagan from her desk “get in here please” he pushes a button on the phone.
“Yes?” She rushes into his office from her desk
“Shut the door and come here” following his orders she does then walk to his desk. “I need to ask for a very important favor and I need you to not ask me any questions,” he quickly explains as he packs his things.
“Ok”
“You’re friends with Amy right? Scott’s assistant”
“Yes”
“Ok take out your phone I need you to text her that she’s about to get a call from the police station downtown, to transfer to Scott-” Teagan takes out her phone and starts to type the text to Amy “tell her to say he’s not there and don’t take a message.”
“What?” She looks up at him
“Just do it Teagan!”
She continues to text “sent” she presses the send button “what’s going on?”
“Nothing I need you to confirm for me that Amy got that text”
Looking at her phone “yeah it says she opened it”
“Good, I have to go take care of something. Make sure Amy tells you she did it and call me and let me know all right?”
Teagan nods “sure but is everything okay Harris?”
“Everything is fine” he lies as he walks to the door “don’t forget to call me” Harris leaves.
After the drive, Harris calms himself down and grabs his briefcase walking into the police station “how can I help you?”
“My client is being held here and I need you to go get him”
“Excuse me buddy but that’s not how it works here, I need a name”
“Tanner Milton”
Typing into his computer he starts to read the screen “looks like your client was driving a stolen car without a license”
Taking his wallet with his I.D out Harris shows it to him “I’m sure you ran the plates on the car, it belongs to me he didn’t steal it I gave him permission. Now release him”
“I don’t think so tough guy.”
“He’s a minor, holding him in that cell for something he didn’t do is enough for me to bring this station to the ground.”
The cop behind the desk laughs “he’s not the first minor in a jail cell hot shot”
“Those other minors aren’t DA Milton’s son, are they? Imagine what he’ll do if he finds out you have his son in a cell.”
A look of worry flashes across the cop’s face “whatever.” Getting up he unlocks the door for Harris to walk in “I’ll let him go but you can’t get your car till Monday”
“Fine.”
Staying close to the gate Harris watches as the officer walk to the cell and unlocks it “Tanner Milton you’re free to go.”
Tan walks out of the cell and turns to see Harris waiting, he smiles but a smile isn’t returned instead Harris walks back out and waits. “You know if you told me you were the DA’s son I would’ve let you go,” the cop says to Tan as they release him.
“Name dropping is so lame though” he jokes
“Here’s your stuff” they hand him a ziplock with his belongings.
“Thank you” he takes it.
Harris remains quiet as they walk to the car, unlocking it they get in. Pulling away he focuses on the driving, the silence kills Tan “I messed up.”
“No you drove my car without my permission, and why don’t you have a license?”
“I failed my road test!” Tan covers his face embarrassed “but that’s not important, I messed up and I won’t do it again I promise”
“2 days, we couldn’t even do it for 2 days. You got arrested Tan, and your father was sitting in my office accusing you of running away when you called.” Afraid he’ll get vulnerable and take back everything he’s saying Harris keeps his eyes forward “we didn’t think this through, I didn’t think this through!”
“Harry stop this isn’t your fault”
“Of course it is, I left you in my house alone” Harris blames himself for everything as he drives them back to his place.
Tan sits there quietly knowing truly he was the problem, even when he doesn’t want to mess up he messes up. This is the best thing that could’ve ever happened to them and right now it wasn’t feeling that way, they both messed up. “We just have to talk about it more, figure out how it’s going to work”
Harris sighs “it’s not going to work Tan, we tried”
“Ok so we try again”
Parking the car when he gets to his penthouse building Harris turns to Tan finally looking at him “no this is it Tan we tried”
“Harry come on” Tan begs searching Harris’s eyes “I’m sorry I won’t do it again” he frowns trying not to cry.
“We don’t know that, they called your father Tan, and Teagan hasn’t called me to confirm that he didn’t get the call yet. We both could be in a lot more trouble right now, do you understand why this has to end now?” Harris says the words firmly to Tan and he tries his best to stay mature as Harris breaks up with him but all Tan wants to do is cry. “I’m sorry Tan” Harris gets out of the car walking to the entrance
“Hey Mr. Wheeler” Jerry opens the door for him
“Hello Jerry, thank you” they exchange a smile as he walks in.
Confirming his gone Tan breaks down in the car covering his face with his hands as he cries in his lap, how could he have possibly messed up this much this fast? Harris was one of the few things he wanted so bad but knew he’d probably never get. But he got him, for 2 days. Getting all the crying out of his system Tan wipes his face and gets out of the car
His eyes land in Jerry’s and they both smile “everything all right?” Jerry asks as he opens the door for Tan walking towards him
“Peachy” Tan goes in and walks to the elevator.
Walking off the elevator to Harris’s penthouse Tan doesn’t knock he just walks in, Harris walks out of the hall coming from the bedroom holding Tan’s bag “I packed your things for you, I’m taking you home.”
Tan walks to him about to kiss him with all he has and beg him to stop this, but he doesn’t. Instead, he takes his bag and hands Harris his keys “thank you but you don’t have to drive me home, the train station is fine I know my way home from there.”
“Are you sure?” Tan nods as he puts his bag on his back.
They both walk out of the door and get in the elevator quietly standing next to each other afraid to say a word. When they get to the front entrance Jerry notices Tan’s backpack on his back and the duffle “leaving so soon?” He asks
Tan turns around and says “all good things must come to an end” he smiles “it was nice meeting you Jer”
Jerry waves “you too kid.”
Tan gets in the car as Harris is already behind the wheel waiting “what was that?” He asked confused by how fluent Tan was with his doorman.
“We’re friends,” Tan says with a slight smile.
Harris drives and the car is completely silent both too afraid to speak. They just broke up after 2 days of trying something they both knew would never work. Harris gets closer to the train station “thank you for being so calm about this”
Tan quietly scoffs “yeah I’m so calm” he replies sarcastically because he knows he is screaming on the inside. “I’m going to be an adult about this Harry, you won’t have to worry about me ok this was our secret.”
Tan think this hurts him more than it hurts Harris, but inside it’s taking all of Harris’s willpower and training to not lose his cool and throw everything out the window for Tan. “I know I’m not worried” he pulls up to the station.
Tan unbuckles his seatbelt “I’ll miss you Harry” he wants to reach over and kiss him but he knows he can’t instead he gets out of the car before Harris could say anything back.
