Micah.
After I climbed out of the shower, I pulled on a pair of worn jeans and threw on an old t-shirt. I wasn’t one to ‘dress to impress’, unlike my perfect sister.
Sometimes, I thought I was too hard on her and that maybe, just maybe, I should be nicer, but I couldn’t. My parents lost that privilege when they had her. They were ordered by the the King and Queen to have another child, because the odds of their useless son turning out to be as good as his parents, seemed quite unlikely. That’s what infuriated me. I wanted so much to prove them wrong, but I never could. Cassandra was always there to prove the Royals right.
Maybe she was the glory child. Mother and Father seemed very impressed and even after I complained time, after time about her screwing up my missions, they were only proud. I didn’t understand it. I didn’t feel appreciated and I certainly didn’t get the reward that I deserved.
Just as I was about to lay down on my bed and take a long, awaited nap, my demanding parents called me downstairs. What the hell did they want?
“I’ll be down in a minute!” I called.
“NOW!” My mother screamed, her voice serious and somewhat angered. Geesh, I’m coming, lady! She was so impatient, but I was still curious to as what she could want. She was a very serious woman and didn’t like to fool around.
I finished combing my hair and pulled on a pair of socks and then ran down the stairs, skipping two at a time. Once I had reached the dining room where my parents and my sister sat, they looked infuriated.
“What took you so long?” My mother asked angrily.
“I came as soon as you called.” I lied.
“Whatever,” She said, rolling her eyes. “There was a Dragon spotted not far from here, about mile away, at the school. Get your weapons and get there as soon as possible.”
“The School? They never come that close to contact with the mortals.” I mumbled in disbelief. I couldn’t understand this. This was a very uncommon situation, but was no different than dwarves on the subway, so I guess it was possible.
“I know. That’s why you need to get there as soon as possible.” My father told me.
I nodded and went for my boots and leather jacket. “Cassandra grab my weapons while I get more Xactris powder.” I ordered. She quickly obeyed and went upstairs to my room.
I went to the kitchen and poured enough powder into my pouch and shoved it in the inside pocket of my favorite jacket. I had a feeling I was going to need it. Within seconds, Cassandra was downstairs with both of my daggers, my silver plated sword, and two guns. I was ready and prepared.
“Alright. I’ll be back for dinner.” I told them with a forced smile. Why was I nervous?
“If you get into trouble, call your sister.” My father told me. I certainly wasn’t going to do that. Maybe, by succeeding in this mission, they would believe that I was a promising slayer too. I could only hope. I discarded my thoughts and headed outside to my motorcycle and hopped on. Hey, I got to ride in style!
What bothered me this time, instead of saying ‘see you soon’ like usual, they looked scared, and unfortunately, I was too. Dragons despised mortals and tried to stay away from them. If one had the balls to go to a school, something was messed up. I guess I’ll have to find out what the hell this beast is up to.
Reagan.
“What do you think would have happened if the two lovers hadn’t have died?” The teacher, Mr. Craig asked the half of the class that weren’t sleeping or daydreaming.
In English Class, we were reading the tragedy of Rome and Juliet. Most of the class either didn’t understand it or thought it was boring. I thought otherwise. This wasn’t boring. Whether the lovers’ passion was real or not, this was a real story that brought many emotions and frankly, I enjoyed reading it.
No one seemed to have any idea of the answer he was looking for, so I decided to raise my hand and speak up. Like usual.
“Yes, Reegan?” Mr. Craig asked, calling on me.
I got excited, because I was going to slay this answer like a boss. Here I go.
“I think that over time, the lovers’ passion would have faded, especially when they got older. The ‘love at first sight’ obviously can’t last forever and maybe through hard times during marriage, they would have failed as a couple. As we have seen throughout the story, when the romance isn’t there, the relationship is weathered and hard. We couldn’t expect them to be content forever and wouldn’t they eventually realize that they weren’t meant for each other?” Once I realized I was rambling and that some of the other students were glaring, I decided to end my response and leave the rest for Mr. Craig to divulge to the class.
“Very good answer, Reegan, but I have another question for you. What do you think would have happened if only one of them died? What would Romeo’s life look like and how would Juliet have moved on?”
He’s trying to stump me. I won’t let it work.
Obviously it is a trick question. “That would have never happened, because according to both of them, they couldn’t live without each other. Let’s say they were to-”
In the middle of my speech to Mr. Craig, a guy opens the classroom door and walks in. I’ve never seen this guy before and he certainly isn’t a student. He wears torn jeans and shirt that is very flattering to his perfect, chiseled chest. Under his leather jacket, along his belt, it looks like he has a sword and even a couple guns, along with a few smaller blades. Why would he need so many weapons? Was he a bounty hunter or something?
The man has slicked back, dark blonde hair that is a cut in the messy Robert Pattinson style. My favorite style. As he looks up from the floor to the class, he looks directly at me, his piercing green eyes not leaving my face for one second. If he was a bounty hunter, I could tell he was here for me.
Micah. Five Minutes Earlier…
As I ran down the halls of the VHS school building, I was becoming worried. My silver plated sword was in in scripted with dragon blood and was supposed to glow when close to an Auroran (mythical/non-human) Species. This baby was glowing out of control. It was brighter than I had ever seen and it kept flashing, causing me to squint.
I don’t see any dragon here yet, I think as I pass each classroom door, making sure the beast isn’t hiding inside one of the rooms. I began to feel very lucky that mortals couldn’t see me, or else I would look like a fool running crazily all over the place. Where was the thing?
As I come to the next classroom, my blade shines even brighter. So much brighter, that I thought it could shatter within contact of the any creature. I disposed the blade in its sheath, hooked it to my belt, and cautiously opened the classroom door. Stepping inside, I smell the beast right away, my nostrils twitching in disgust. Looking around, I don’t see the creature at all. Where could he have gone? I sweep my gaze over the each student quickly, making sure no one is hurt, until one boy catches my eye.
He looks to be about seventeen, and for some reason, I thought he looked very..cute. Why did I just think that? He had dark brown hair that was cut short and he wore tight skinny jeans and Fleetwood Mac t-shirt. He had on the most interesting Harry Potter converse, making him look even more geekier than his glasses did. He was interesting, but not because of his appearance. It was because of his eyes. They glowed and lit up like only one other thing I had seen before. Dragons.
Reegan.
“Is something wrong, Reegan?” Mr. Craig asks me, noticing my awkward silence.
Does no one else see this guy that just walked in? I look around the room and see no one directing their stares at him. They must not be able to see him. This is so strange. Trust me, if they could see him, they would be awake and drooling. This guy looked liked he was from and Abercrombie magazine. I even had trouble concentrating as he began walking to the back of the room. The best part about this was that he was looking right at me! Sorry girls!
“Reegan?” Mr. Craig says my name again and I realize that I must be daydreaming a little too vividly, so I continue on.
“Sorry, Mr. Craig. I was just gathering my thoughts. The two lovers’ made it very clear in the story that living without each other isn’t possible. Let’s say that it is. Romeo would have found some other girl and overtime, probably would have gotten over Juliet. All he needed was a pretty face and if it were on the other hand and Juliet would have survived, she would have probably had a very hard life. She would not have went through the arranged marriage, which would have caused a barrier between her and her family. She would, then, have to leave her home and find a job, which wasn’t an easy talks for ladies at that time. She was headed for a much harder road, unlike Romeo, who only had a little bump in the road.”
Mr. Craig seemed to like my answer from the smile that was spread across his face. “Interesting. I like the way you think, Reegan.” He said surprisingly. Should I ask for extra credit? Eh, I won’t push any limits today. “If only the rest of the class shared your interest in my teaching.” He mumbled with a laugh.
“Now, for the homework assignment..”
I instantly blocked all the people out of my mind as the students started grumbling and Mr. Craig started babbling. I turned around and looked back at the mysterious man who walked in and he was still there. His eyes mesmerized me. He was as beautiful as an angel. He looked back at me with a curious gaze as if he wasn’t sure about what he wanted to do.
What was his pourpose for being here? And why was he looking at me like so? When the bell rang, I stood up and collected my things to leave. Surprisingly, he followed me.
I tried to pretend that I couldn’t see him, hoping that he would go away. Normally, I wouldn’t mind a sexy, older man to follow me around, but I had a feeling this was more than what I could bargain for. Truthfully, I was terrified. Why would someone have so many weapons? It was rather disturbing.
I feel something grasp the back of my shirt and I lose my breath, startled and frozen.
“Hey, squirt, keep it up and you’ll be teaching the class soon.” Faith says, coming up behind me and throwing her arm around my neck.
“Whew, Faith. Don’t scare me like that.” I seriously thought it was that guy. I silently thanked the Lord for small favors.
“What’s your problem, Reeg? You look like you’ve seen a ghost.”
I stop at my locker and silently put in my combination. As I do, I look out of the corner of my eye to see if he is still following me. He is. I let out a groan and sigh. What does he want?
“Okay, something is wrong.” She decides, placing a hand on my back. “What is it?”
What do I say? Some strange man is following me? That would sound crazy. If only she saw him.. Maybe she would believe.
“Okay, Faith. Look to your right, about four lockers down by the water fountain.” I tell her.
“Stacey Fulton? That hoe? Is she pestering you or something?”
Damn it. “No, next to her. Do you see the guy with the nice hair and pretty eyes?” I said, pointing.
She looks over, squinting to where I pointed, trying to see what I see. It’s no use though. She can’t see him and I think I’m the only one who I can. Why is this happening? Am I imagining things? Am I crazy? Im not crazy. I won’t believe that. I can’t accept that.
“I don’t see him, Ree. Maybe you do see a ghost.” She laughed, teasing me again. “Maybe you just need rest or something. I told you staying up late to read wasn’t a good idea.”
As soon as she said the words, a lump formed in my throat. Was this person just a figment of my imagination? Could he be a ghost? If this was what a ghost looked like, the people on paranormal activity were scared for no reason. This guy was a god. He couldn’t be a ghost. I had to remind myself that I wasn’t crazy and I hoped to God that Faith was right.
