After telling the story to Dom and hearing his reactions it made me finally realise the enormity of what had happened to poor Theo, and Dom agreed with me that we would try our best to make him feel welcome in our group. I made him promise to keep the story to himself as Theo may not want everyone to know and he promised to tell no one not even Lucas, which made me feel guilty again as Lucas was also my best mate.
Theo was due to arrive at six pm, and I was interested to see what he looked like now. I hadn’t seen him in such a long time that I was very intrigued, and Dom was interested to see if he could play any sports.
I wanted Dom to be there when Theo arrived, I thought that it might be good to have one of my friends here to welcome him straight away so he knew he was wanted from the beginning. My parents agreed so Dom called his mother to explain the situation making sure that she kept the information to herself for now.
She told him that she understood but wanted him back first thing in the morning as she would like to see her son sometime this week, she also invited me over and I was excited to get some of her food again. For the rest of the day we did nothing but eat, drink and laze about, there was a slight tension in the air and everyone but Dom and I were restless.
I didn’t understand it because I knew Theo would be fine, of course he would be upset but that was to be expected as he just lost his whole family. However I truly believed that in no time at all my friends and I would have him up and about having fun again.
Dom and I decided to help my mum by relieving her of planning Elliot’s party, although it was still important to her she had so many other things to do right now. So my dad handed me his card and Dom and I set out planning what we would need to throw an impressive going away party.
We sat for a few hours in my room so that Elliot couldn’t hear what we were planning, he knew we were having a party but he didn’t need to know all the details. Because of where we live we decided to have a Mexican themed party, so we checked the internet site for our local party depot and found that they had everything we needed from Mexican themed plates and cups to piñata’s and balloons.
I ordered everything we would need online and set it so that they wouldn’t be delivered until Saturday so that we didn’t have to hide them for long. Mexican food was Elliot’s favourite so we roped in Domingo’s mum to make the food for us telling her we would pay her for the supplies and her hard work.
Once we had finished I huffed in relief as that was one less thing for my parents to worry about and Elliot would still get his epic leaving party. I went to lie on my bed beside Dom and I must have fell asleep, because the next thing I knew Elliot was shaking Dom and I awake telling me mum and dad were pulling up after being at the airport all afternoon.
I jumped up and we all went downstairs to meet Theo, we all sat in the living room and watched as my mother led a tall boy into the house while my father brought in the suitcases. I stood up as he was led into the room and he was nothing like I thought he would be, I had expected a hunched in pain, red eyed teenager.
Theo was standing tall, he had jet black hair like Domingo’s and dark brown eyes, I could tell there was something hidden in them but his demeanour was hiding his pain well. He had a ring piercing on the left side of his lower lip and from what I could see of his arms and chest he was covered in tattoos. He was clothed in black skinny jeans, with a plain charcoal tight fitting t-shirt and he was carrying a black leather jacket in his hands and wearing black boots with the laces open on his feet.
He was for all intents and purposes a hot guy and I am sure he would fit in well with the girls at school, he was tall and lean at least five, eleven and he had a square jaw and perfectly styled hair. I looked over to Dom and noticed him taking Theo in as well and I could understand how he was feeling as I was confused too at how… well how ok he looked.
“Boys this is Theo, he is your age Charlie, Dom and he finished school in England but has agreed to go through senior year with you while he gets used to living here.” Mum introduced him.
I watched as he scowled slightly at that news and I could feel him, I too hated the fact that you had to stay in school so long here. One more year couldn’t hurt him though and it was probably the best way of making friends around here, so I smiled in encouragement and Dom copied me.
“When you’re done checking me out shall we take it upstairs?” He winked at Dom and smirked at me.
“Excuse me?” Domingo stuttered slightly.
“Well I am gay, your hot, let’s go.” He smirked again.
“Er I’m not gay sorry.” Dom blushed.
“Sure you’re not, everyone’s gay gorgeous they just need someone special to make them admit it.” Theo continued confidently.
“Maybe we should just get you settled in now Theo?” My mum saved Dom from answering.
“Sure Helen, see you later.” He winked at Dom.
I watched as my mum led Theo from the room and my dad followed with his suitcases, they climbed the stairs and disappeared. Elliot collapsed on the sofa, Dom copying his movements with a huff, and I turned to look at them.
“Well that was weird?” Elliot said.
“I know I expected him to be completely depressed but instead he is cocky and trying to get my best mate into bed with him!” I snapped without meaning to.
“Yeah that was a new experience, no one has ever been so blasé about something to me before.” Dom looked confused still.
“Yeah well maybe this bravado is his way of dealing with things so let’s just leave him be for now ok Charlie.” Elliot said looking strangely at me then Dom.
“Well as long as he leaves Domingo be, we will all get along fine won’t we! He can’t just force someone to be gay, Dom is straight!” I said pointing at Dom but pulled back when I saw something flit across his eyes.
“I am sure he won’t, like I said it’s just his way of coping.” Elliot said. “Now let’s go I have to finish packing.”
He left the room and I turned to Dom to make sure he was ok, but he had clearly stopped thinking about it because he stood up and smiled. We walked back up to my room and started another game of Fifa but we sat in silence now all the fun of this morning had left. It wasn’t that I didn’t like Theo and I was fully aware that Elliot was probably right and it was just his way of coping but I didn’t like the fact that he made my friend feel uncomfortable. Domingo was straight, true he hadn’t had many girlfriends but he was a good student like me and I just assumed that his sports were more important.
I think Theo would definitely fit in with my friends though as long as he found someone else to direct his comments to, maybe some unsuspecting stranger at school or something. I didn’t have a problem with the fact that he was gay I just didn’t want to be in between him and my friends as he made them feel uncomfortable.
I looked at Dom sitting quietly and hoped he wasn’t too bothered about it, it wasn’t like him to sit so clearly deep in thought without saying anything to me. He looked at me and smiled so I decided to let it go, he was tougher than he looked and he knew he wasn’t gay so I am sure he wouldn’t let the comments get to him too much.
No I would let it go and give Theo another chance, I am sure he would stop being so direct when he got to know us and I am sure we will all get along fine, maybe he could find a boyfriend at school. Dom lost the game again and instead of repeating the situation from earlier on I decided to call it quits and we both just lay down on my bed.
I rolled so that I was facing him and he smiled at me but I could still see that something was bothering him, Dom always told me everything so I decided to just leave it until he was ready to share. I pushed his hair out of his face and smiled back then my door pushed open and Theo was standing in the door way smiling at us both.
“Not gay huh?” He smirked.
“No were not were best friends.” I replied.
“Very close though aren’t you, closer than most best friends? Anyway your mum told me to tell you dinner will be ready in ten minutes and she wants you and the lovely Dom here downstairs.” He continued before I could interrupt.
“Dom is not gay Theo so please stop your inappropriate comments towards him. We will be down soon afterwards do you want to join us and watch a movie or play Fifa?” I asked trying to be kind.
“Don’t think so but thanks for the offer.” He said and walked away.
“Can you believe him, he is determined to make you upset isn’t he? Come on lets go get some food.” I said and pulled him by the hand.
We went for food and afterwards we watched a movie as planned, I was really looking forward to Elliot’s party so we discussed that for a while before Domingo fell asleep beside me. I couldn’t help but looking at Dom as he slept and wondered how much Theo’s words may have affected him, I had never seen him so quiet before. From tomorrow I was determined to make sure he was ok and that Theo hadn’t upset him too much, eventually turned over to fall asleep and Dom subconsciously gravitated towards me and wrapped his arms around me. I fell asleep knowing my best mate would be fine, he wasn’t gay we were just close and there was nothing wrong with that.
