One month later:
Today was Rohit and Raj’s one month anniversary as an official couple. They were both planning on doing something special for the other.
Raj was hoping to do something extra special for Rohit, especially since the love of his life had confessed his love to him and made Raj the happiest person alive:
Raj walked out of his house, planning to head to the garage, before he saw his dad and took a little detour. He walked quickly up to his father and touched his feet.
“Bless you, beta,” his dad said, ruffling Raj’s hair and pulling him into a heartfelt hug. Raj’s father had an exceptionally strong grip, which made Raj feel warm and safe. The last time they had hugged like this was a long time ago.
His father pulled away from the hug and placed his hands on Raj’s shoulders. “You look different today, ” he said, looking at Raj from head to toe.
“How so?” Raj asked
“You’re glowing, my son. You look like you are bathing in happiness,” he said, smiling.
“And you look even older,” Raj joked. His dad’s expression was the look of pure betrayal and Raj couldn’t help but laugh.
“That’s what I get for complimenting you,” Raj’s dad muttered, looking at his wrist watch.
“I have a meeting with some foreign associates and I can’t afford to be late, so bye Raj,” he said, hugging Raj one more time before getting into his car and driving away.
Raj watched his car drive into the distance before following a path that led to the back of the house. A giant garage that his father had installed when Raj was a baby sat inconspicuously behind a giant metal door. Raj, who got the code when he turned sixteen, entered the garage to see rows of expensive cars. None of the ones that his father liked suited him, with Raj only driving a specific car: a black Chrysler.
Raj walked towards it and started the car. All of the cars already had their keys inside. Raj didn’t know if this was genuine or just plain stupid, but he started to drive off to the perfect place to find a gift for Rohit.
Thirty minutes later, Raj could see the biggest mall in Delhi. The shopping mall had the same feel no matter what season it is: the light, the smell of new clothing, the well polished floors and the smiling faces of people going in and out. Only the piped up music and the fashion changes.
Raj only stopped at two places: the jewelry shop and a store that sold decorations. He smiled as he got back into his car. He had the perfect gift.
Rohit was unaware of the plan, and spent the day relaxing with his family:
He was so happy that day, it was a beautiful day that he had spent with his mother. They had made breakfast together, watched tons of Bollywood and Disney movies, and rearranged her wardrobe. Where most sons would hate it, Rohit enjoyed hanging around with his mother opposed to his father.
They were currently sitting in the master bedroom, where she was massaging Rohit’s shoulders while humming a sweet tune. It was so relaxing and her beautiful voice could lull him to sleep in a matter of seconds… He could feel his eyelids closing when his phone started ringing. Rohit hastily grabbed his phone and answered the call.
“Hello?” Rohit said, his voice sounding rough from sleep.
“Hi, Jaan.”
After Rohit heard Raj’s beautiful voice, all traces of sleep left his eyes and he suddenly felt energized.
“You sound tired babe, what’s wrong?” he asked, sounding worried.
“Nothing, I was about to sleep when you called that’s all.”
“Okay. Hey, I want to tell you something important, will you please meet me at our spot?” Raj said, sounding serious.
“Okay, what time?” Rohit asked.
“Three, love you,” Raj said, hanging up without waiting for a response.
“Who was that?” Rohit’s mom asked.
“It’s Raj, a friend of mine from school,” Rohit lied.
“Are you going to meet him today?”
“Yes. We have a project that is due on Monday and I totally forgot about it. He called to remind me that we have to finish it today at his house.”
Rohit felt guilty about lying to his mom, who had been his best friend for many years, but he knew how she would react if she found out her son loved another man. In fact, Rohit was unsure whether she would accept him but he was not willing to face the wrath of his father if he told her.
“Okay, baby, put in your best, okay?” she said, smiling.
“Sure, Mom. I am your son aren’t I?” Rohit smiled back.
A few hours later, Rohit arrived at the old temple and started hiking towards the forest. The sound of birds chirping and dry leaves under my feet kept him company as he followed the trail that he had been walking for so long. The wide land was covered by different types of trees, some tall, others wide. The sunlight barely touched his skin because of the wide leaves covering him in shade.
Rohit sighed in relief as he saw the bushes that hid their spot, picking up a stick to push them to the side. Rohit looked ahead to see Raj sitting on a rock, throwing pebbles into the water. He walked right up to Raj and sat next to him, putting his head on Raj’s shoulder. Rohit took a deep breath and inhaled all of Raj’s potent cologne.
It seemed as if they both understood what the other was feeling, despite neither of them saying a word. Suddenly, Raj turned to face Rohit, taking his face in both of his hands. He then kissed Rohit’s forehead, both cheeks, and then ended with a long kiss on Rohit’s lips. Both of the boys could feel butterflies erupting in their stomachs, their hearts threatening to explode.
Raj pulled back and started using his thumb to caress Rohit’s cheeks. When Rohit finally opened his eyes again, he could practically see the love swirling around in Raj’s stunning eyes.
“I have a surprise for you, Ro,” he said with a huge smile.
“Really? What is it?” Rohit asked, jumping from the top of the rock and standing in front of him.
“I can’t tell you but I can show you,” he smirked.
“Okay then, show me.”
Raj took Rohit’s hands and started to lead him to a trail that Rohit had never been down before. They walked for a little while before they reached a meadow.
“Oh my gosh. T-This is beautiful!” Rohit exclaimed, already running in the soft grass. He suddenly felt arms wrap around him.
“Do you like it?” Raj asked in a husky voice.
“Like it? I love it!” Rohit shouted.
“Then you will also love your next surprise.”
“There’s more?” Rohit asked.
“Yes kitten, but first, you have to put this blindfold on,” he said, tying a black tie over Rohit’s eyes.
“You’re no fun,” Rohit pouted, holding Raj’s hand as he led the way.
They walked for a few more minutes before they finally stopped. Raj let go of their intertwined hands and stood behind Rohit. He slowly untied the blindfold and Rohit opened my eyes to see the most beautiful and romantic sight in front of me.
Right in front of him was a huge tree that had been decorated with lanterns hanging from branches and fairy lights dangling from leaves. There was a small table and two chairs, the table covered by a red tablecloth with white designs. A bucket full of ice had a bottle of wine sitting in it, with two glasses already set out. On the table, there were two plates and cutleries with a picnic basket at the end of the table.
“Do you like your surprise?” he asked.
“I fucking love it!” Roiht shouted.
“Good then, let’s eat. I’m starving,” he said.
Raj pulled up a chair for Rohit and opened the basket, pulling out three containers. He smiled and opened the containers.
Rohit could immediately smell the delicious food: Cauliflower Manchurian and Aloo Chaat.
“How did you know?” he asked while giving Raj a huge smile.
“A little kitten once told me that he loves these two dishes a lot,” he smirked.
He dished the two dishes out onto two plates and placed them in front of Rohit.
“This is too much for just me,” I said, giving him an innocent look.
“That’s why we are eating it together, kitten,” Raj smirked.
After Raj and Rohit finished eating and had dessert: a delicious apple pie. They were now lying down on the grass, side by side. The two boys admired the sky and simply basked in each other’s presence.
“Happy anniversary Rohit,” Raj said while facing me.
Today was their one-month anniversary? Rohit thought. He felt so stupid.
Rohit abruptly sat up and Raj did the same thing.
“I’m so sorry Raj, I totally forgot about it,” Rohit said, looking down.
Raj cupped Rohit’s cheeks and pressed his lips to his temple.
“You don’t have to say sorry. People forget important dates now and then. It’s no big deal. The important thing is that you are here with me,” he said sincerely.
“Also I’m here to remind you,” he joked. He started to wiggle his eyebrows, which made Rohit giggle.
“That’s more like it kitten. I love it when you smile, Ro. I love you.”
“I love you too,” Rohit smiled and pulled Raj into his arms, they kissed and finally cuddled.
