Three trash bags were besides Kihyun, his worn out duffel bag over his body, the sun brightly shining on his face making him squint.
There was a pathway to Shownu’s house, typically seen in suburban houses. What was weird for Kihyun was that the house was located next to the street, as in literally next to it, cars after cars speeding up as they went ahead to the next upcoming streets.
His ears are filled with noise, cars cranking the engine after the light turn from red to green. Motorcycles were the worse, his shoulders flaring up after the sound of vehicle roared up and left the waiting position.
The car that had brought him was still behind him as the chauffeur waited for Shownu to show up so he could leave. At first Shownu was supposed to pick him up. He was going to pick him at his old apartment really early in the morning and then take him out to eat.
And then something happened that Shownu had to go somewhere instead of being here with him. He didn’t tell him where, but he emphasized that it was really important, and he couldn’t miss it even if he wanted too.
So here he was waiting for him outside while Shownu sped up to his house. Kihyun refused to move anywhere else even if the sun bothered him. There was an ounce of excitement hanging on his shoulders, the muscles in his face warming up so that when Shownu arrives they will be ready to display to him. There was still nervousness hanging there, accompanying his thousands of different emotions floating around his body.
Despite the humidity of the area surrounding the premises of the block, he was cheery and hopeful. He didn’t know what to expect once Shownu got there. Will he be courteous and bubbly enough to actually show him around the house, or will he be grumpy and just show him off to his bedroom and then run off to his errands.
Interestingly, Shownu’s mood was intact in making Kihyun happy. He had interest in the kids and was constantly checking him through the day, even cutting his work hours which was very beneficial at the moment.
“I don’t think Mr. Son will be very pleased to see his boyfriend in the sun for quite a while,” the chauffeur speaks, sneaking up around him and placing a black umbrella on the top of his head. He gave him a smile and then retrieved his body to face the house instead.
Kihyun enables a squeaky giggle, almost coming out as a snort, while he places his hand over his belly. ” I don’t think he’s that thoughtful to care from far away.”
“You’re wrong on that Mr. Yoo. Mr. Son has been going around crazy trying to make this house suitable for you.” His voice is steady and even as he delivers this quite piece of knowledge into Kihyun’s emotions.
That statement surprised him. His excitement startled a response from one of his babies, the kicking of his third child positioned towards the bottom of his belly made the other siblings kick as well.
It was always shocking to hear that Shownu actually cared for him. For such a long time, Shownu had never shown his true emotions, was always angry and ready to ruin people’s lives.
Even his coworkers gossiped to each other that Shownu was less frightening. Shownu would leave early and wouldn’t hover over everyone’s progress, letting them to work peacefully and letting them to bring the given work as good as possible.
For the first time Kihyun was hopeful that maybe their relationship can blossom to a romantic relationship and not just, co-parent relationship.
That thought made him mentally laugh, distributing a weak, faint smile on his face. Just because things were gradually changing that didn’t mean that he and Shownu would go further into their relationship.
Such ludicrous idea that formed in his head. He was just living in the ludicrous and laughable situation that he was in. He was letting himself be fooled at the thought of chance; a change that he wants to happen ever so badly.
“You really think he’s a changed man? To think that he’s doing all these things for me would be like slapping me for believing that there was a different side of him that no one has seen before,” Kihyun asks, looking at the man next to him as if he’s the response to all of his questions.
And in fact, he was. This man knew Shownu in a different context. To him, and his co-workers, he was the epitome of torture, but to this man he could be the savior to his desperate need of a job.
The chauffeur was thoughtful for a second, admiring the sky above, blue and full of vibrant color. Then he grinned, and adjusted his hat. “A man changes when he’s in love. His past was horrible, making him a horrible, apathetic man. His justifications for treating others for the way his past was is not something that should be applaud for or try to understand in the slightest, but his past was his past. I think he realized what kind of a man he was when he felled in love with you,” the man responds.
“When he fell in love with me?” His voice sounds hoarse matching his appalled face. This must me some kind of joke. Shownu wasn’t in love with him. If he did, he wouldn’t have done those things to him.
“Look, Mr. Yoo I shouldn’t gossip this at all. I am driven to tell you this, though. I am man of his word. I’ve been working for this family since he was old enough to boss people around, and let me tell you that his character has changed. He talks a lot when I come around, his demeanor something that I had never seen before,” the chauffeur tells him with great admiration.
Could it possibly that he could change? Kihyun didn’t know what to think. He was confused, surprised, and a little overwhelmed. Moving into Shownu’s house so early finally dwelled on him. They’re going to going to fast. He knows it. Probably Shownu knows it. Despite this, they still want to move forward.
He wants to move forward. There was a deep sigh afterwards, the constant flow of thoughts echoing in between every inch of his body.
The chauffeur noticed that this made him think harder than he was before so he lightly brushed his fingers over his arm and sweetly spoke,” Don’t over think it. As well, don’t force yourself just because he changed. You do what is great for you and the future of your children.”
“Thank you. I believe that he can change only if he wants to. Not because of me, or our children. You’re a lovely man,” Kihyun spoke with great delight. Their short chatter made his thoughts wander away for a little.
The sun wasn’t bothering him as much and instead he could feel the breeze of the day swooping around sky, hogging over the trees and the seeds of life.
With a smile, Kihyun bid his goodbye as he saw Shownu arrived in his grey car. Shownu was concentrated, not looking at him at first, his face hard and frozen.
Then after he got out his eyes travel to him, creeping into a change of emotions. There was a slight twinge on his face, a glitch of a smile before it disappeared to his famous sour look.
“Sorry I took long. Meetings are always unpredictable and long.” Shownu was on his formal wear, his dress shirt white and the sleeves rolled up to his elbows, showcasing his firm arms. His tie was untied, and the ends of his shirt were wrinkled and outside of his pants.
“That’s okay,” Kihyun slowly says, shy to raise his voice higher. There was something about the way his upper body looked. A glance of impulse. The quick thirst of opportunity.
Shownu nods, quickly changing his gaze to the chauffeur. “Can you please take my car to Jooheon’s place. I promised him that I would lend him my car. Thank you so much for driving Kihyun,” Shownu tells the man with great honesty and generosity, a side that was strange to Kihyun.
The chauffeur lowered his hat and bowed his dead down. “No worries. It was a pleasure to meet you Mr. Yoo. I’ll see you around.”
Kihyun waved goodbye to the man and then grabbed his trash bags from the floor with great difficulty. The duffel bag was a bit heavy on him, having been carrying for a half hour while he waited.
“Let me help you.” With a swift move, Shownu grabbed the bags with one hand and led him into the front door.
Kihyun waddle from behind Shownu taking everything in as they walked through the door. The kitchen was to the left and right beside it was the dining room. Shownu clicked on a light to illuminate the room that was next on their detour.
When they entered to an unused room, Kihyun immediately dropped his duffle bag on the bed and sat down on one of the chairs beside it.
He didn’t want to admit that his feet were hurting a lot. It wasn’t just that he stood for a long time, it was also because his feet were very swollen from the pregnancy. He was at the stage where his symptoms were at his highest. And being the kind of person to not complain, Kihyun just keeps it to himself.
Without noticing, Kihyun does a satisfying sigh that was so loud that it made Shownu look at him with concern. Shownu had already dropped his trash bags into the bed as well and was now getting hangers from the closet. “Are you okay?”
“I’m fine. My feet are a little swollen, that’s all.” Kihyun tried to mask the pain away and instead laid back on the chair and lets Shownu do the work for him. Waiting for him took his energy out. Standing too much or walking too much tires him that he just wants to go to sleep or lay in bed for the rest of the day.
“Then I can show you the rest of the house tomorrow so that you can rest. I can order something in if you like,” Shownu suggests, grabbing a hanger and a shirt from the bag like if he had already seen the clothes.
Kihyun smiles at what its in front of him. Never in a million years he would think he would be here. Shownu grabbing his stuff and putting them in hangers while he sat and looked. It was always him who the reverse.
Times had change and he didn’t know how to exactly feel. They were closer for sure in the sense that there wasn’t any fights whatsoever or Shownu being a completely dick to him. Somehow he felt like this kind of relationship was tip toeing around the truth of their consequence.
They were trying to avoid what they had done and accepted the consequences after. Their intimate moments had not been talked about at all, in neither in their conversations when they ate dinner or when they were are alone in his office.
“That would be great.” He puts a hand on his belly and with slowness, he is able to get up from the chair, allowing him to walk to where his clothes were spread on the bed.
“Do you live here?” He was meaning to ask him. Shownu had said that his uncle gave it to him. But he never said if he lived here. It would be weird if he didn’t and then just out of nowhere start leaving here because he’s pregnant.
Shownu frowns. “For a while. Then I moved to Jooheon’s place.” His hands were rapidly moving, getting three hangers that were next to him and then turning his back to him so that he can place them on the rod.
“Why?” He was surprised. Wouldn’t a man who is in charge of others want to live by himself. Sharing with others can be a pain in the ass.
The question, however made him flinch. He didn’t want to be alone. It was rather odd to see all this emotions caught up with this question. He had problem being alone. And he couldn’t decipher why just yet. He doesn’t know him that good to make inquiries of this type.
Shown didn’t answer his question at all. He felled silent and in thought. His eyebrows were knitted, still frowning. Kihyun noticed that his lips were tight as if he wanted to and decided against it.
Kihyun felt kind of bad and half wondered what made him be quiet after a simple “why?” But that why asked for too much information. Now he started to believe that Shownu had demons that and a past that were never showed around.
It had never occurred to him that Shownu had an ugly past. Just by looking at the way he reacted to the question and how carefully he was at explaining, there was something deep, down the surface that he didn’t show to anyone. And at this exact moment, he was going to make it mission to understand why.
“I’m going to go to the restroom,” he announced, getting his phone from his duffle bag.
“Let me just put this on the rod and I’ll show you where it is.”
“You don’t have to. I can find my way there.” Kihyun shut the door before Shownu could say something and then made his journey to find the damn bathroom. For this kind of quest, he needed the help of his friends, even if they were sketchy on this entire relationship.
~~~
The bed was uncomfortable. No matter how much he moved, Kihyun simply could not fall asleep. He doesn’t know if it’s because he’s not used to the bed yet or because he was in another room, Shownu closed by, but he could not fall asleep.
Every night he would dream about their lives together with their twins. Their smiles, their laughs, their healthy relationship. And now that’s he’s here, that kind of dream is invasive and uncomfortable to have. Shownu in the same house as him made him guilty for having this dream. He was dreaming of his version of Shownu.
His heart was beating fast, his ears perked up. He feared that Shownu could feel his heart beating loud. He wondered if he was awake as well. Their first night together was not even together.
When he told him to move in with him, he thought, even for a slight second, that it also meant they would be together in the same bed. And how stupid he was to think that. They were not a couple. It would be unreasonable to sleep in the same bed when they weren’t a couple.
That dreamed lingered though, staying and comforting him for a little bit. He wanted that Shownu, and even if it looked like he was getting him, that was just an illusion. Shownu was nice. He was not a changed man. No one changes at the speed of light, even a pregnancy.
The curtains were closed so he couldn’t tell if it was midnight or close to sunrise. He had been awake for so long that he lost track of time.
He was meaning to get up, but this bed was slightly tall for him to jump down the bed. His feet didn’t touch the ground and he was afraid that in the process of getting out he would fall and hurt one of his babies. He was stuck, wishing it was morning, and wishing he was asleep so he wouldn’t have to think.
A sound came very quickly after his last attempt to get out of the bed. Lying in the bed was freaking him out. He needed to get out. This sound became louder and louder. The door flew open and there stood Shownu with a bat in his hands and left foot covered in blood.
Kihyun was confused. He was trying to form words from his confusion when Shownu beat him to it. ” Are you okay? I heard a scream and I thought it was you so I thought you were in danger.” He was out of breath, leaning on the bat for support.
“It was just a loud groan. I can’t get out of the bed, it’s too tall for me,” Kihyun explains, his eyes still on Shownu’s feet.
“Do you want me to help you?”
“Yes, please,” he whispers. His cheeks were turning red and he could feel that Shownu was red as well.
Shownu threw the bad down and jogged to Kihyun’s side. Kihyun, by the time Shownu was there, had already removed the blankets from him and had turn around to the other side.
Shownu came closer, sliding between his legs. He placed his hands on Kihyun very so lightly. He took a deep breath and looked at him. They stared at each other, unable to say something. This was their vulnerable part of their somewhat- relationship. Their intimacy, their skin touch. It brought a different kind of emotion that Kihyun never knew how felt about it. But it was different. Totally different.
Without a second of thought, Kihyun attacked Shownu on the lips. It was an impulse; an impulse that he very much liked. Showing had no hesitations at all. He went straight to the rhythm of their lips moving against each other.
His mind had forgotten everything. He had even forget about Shownu’s hurt foot. He was there, time and moment. Nothing else mattered. Shownu had sneaked his hands around his waist, pulling him closer to him. Kihyun grabs Shownu’s hair and pulls it. He needed this. He needed to feel Shownu in him. He needed to know that they were still something.
As Shownu trail his kisses to his neck, his hands were already down to Shownu’s shirt. He whispers, “Have me,” as he pulls Shownu’s shirt out of his body.
~~~
That night Shownu stayed with him. He had wrapped his arms around his belly protectively. And the crazy part was that after the intimate moment, he felled asleep profoundly. The next few days were the same, although Shownu would come during midnight to sleep next to him when he thought he wasn’t sleeping. What he didn’t know was that Kihyun only slept when he was there. He would have a good night sleep, his body would relax and occasionally the triplets would kick, awakening the father. Shownu would smile and then would close his eyes, the smile still there.
In the mornings he would wake up to food already in the table. Shownu had brought a person to make them food in the morning, saying that he needs to eat healthy in the mornings.
They would eat together and talk. Surprisingly, they never ran out of things to talk about. This morning, though, he had to leave early. He was a little bummed out. He was getting used to eating with someone. Even when he lived by himself, he would eat with Minhyuk and Hyunwon.
The good thing was that his friends were coming over for the afternoon to see the house and to talk about Shownu now that he was coming late due to a meeting he had with his father. How he needs to have a meeting with his father still boggles Kihyun. He’s not rich so he doesn’t understand the way they do things in Shownu’s family.
The house felt empty as he got out of the shower. He was used to being alone. After all he lived alone for a couple of years after graduating from school and moving out from his parents’ house.
This was different. His old apartment was filled with noise all around, kids yelling outside, gossip everywhere. Even if he was tired, the buzz from outside gave him energy to do all that he had to do at home.
Here. Here there was nothing to give him energy, the passing of the cars bore him. They passed all in one time, then silence, and then the pattern would start all over again.
Shownu had given him the day off so he was really bored. Outside of the cubicles, he didn’t have much of a life. He would occasionally watch tv or he would be with Hyungwon most of the time.
Kihyun was glad that Minhyuk came around after he stopped talking him for choosing to be with Shownu despite what he did to him in the past. Minhyuk would never understand why.
He missed having the two of them to pass the day. No one else could make his day like they could. It seemed like his happiness was attached to his friends rather than a hobby or something else, but he liked to be with his friends and enjoying life.
Perhaps he didn’t chose the best choice on education, rather going straight to work with little education from the two years he went to community college. That didn’t matter to him since the best thing was that he was still with his friends. And now more than ever, he was for certain that choosing this path meant he was going to do something great. He’s a parent now and he’s so blessed for that. His life is changing, so scary at the moment, and yet he is beyond happy now that he has Shownu by his side.
He honestly can’t do it without the father in the picture. Three children is too much of a responsibility for one person.
There was two more hours before his friends came so that left with two hours with nothing to do. Well there was something he hadn’t done yet. He hadn’t explore the entire house. From the past couple of days he’s been here, he hasn’t really seen anything beyond the kitchen, the restroom, and their room- his room. He still didn’t know for sure where they stand.
Outside, the birds are chirping and a motorcycle had just passed, making its loud noise evident through the house. Kihyun felt like an intruder going towards places that he hadn’t been before. Besides his room, there was three more to see. The first one he encounter was, obviously the office room. The door was ajar, and from his stance, he could see a metallic cabinet with the top drawer open, showcasing important files out in the free.
He couldn’t help but think that his file is there. Of course all of his employees are on that cabinet. He’s the boss after all. Even so, his mind can’t help think that there is more than just an employee file.
His heart was beating as he came closer to the room next to the office. The walls had nothing in them. Usually houses are filled with frames of family. To the contrary, the wall was empty, hollow, left off family warmth. The second room was closed. No way could he open it, knowing that perhaps something might be there that he didn’t like.
Ignoring his conscious, Kihyun speeds up, his heart accelerating, the beams of sweat traveling through his hand and up his arms where they would reach up to his neck.
There was adrenaline from wanting to know more about Shownu. Who is he beyond the boss facade. What made him tick off. What made him be the way he is? Who is the real Shownu? Kihyun doesn’t know where all this questioning is coming from. What he does know is that now that he’s interested, it’ll be harder to just let those thoughts only linger in his head.
There was a new side to Shownu. A new side that brings him interest. The last room was there, right in front him, and although he wanted to open the door, he knew that would be an invasion of privacy. Somehow he will have to unravel the real Shownu that didn’t involve going behind his back and lying to him.
Those two hours are going to be really really cruel.
