CHAPTER 7:
“At ease.” The head palace guard called, allowing the thirty plus vampire guards in front of him to relax. I watched silently from behind him, sizing up the recruits. The security on the Castle was being doubled and, supposedly, these were the best of the best the Vampire lord had to offer.
Maybe one, I thought to myself, is good enough to be here. I made eye contact with that one, not shocked when his eyes darted to the ground. I sighed in my mind, realizing my favorite vampire still seemed upset with me. “Commander Kric?”
I looked toward the head palace guard, who was staring at me questioningly. “Yes?”
“Would you like to say anything before I release them?” He asked, his voice carrying a slightly hopeful note.
I stepped forward, accustomed to the admiring stares of the soldiers before me. “Hello.” I said at first, attempting to make eye contact with everyone. “I’d just like to inform everyone that they’ve been brought here and given a higher clearance than most soldiers could ever dream of. Essentially, your sole purpose is to protect the lives of the kings and their heir. You’ve been chosen as the best of the best, the most worthy to protect the lives of the most important members of our race. If you were wrongly chosen, I suggest you leave now. Failure will not be tolerated.” No one moved. “Congratulations then soldiers. You’re Palace guards now. Make our kingdom proud.”
The soldiers cheered, patting each other on the back. They were then dismissed and the room began to empty. I saw a certain vampire shuffling from foot to foot, annoyed at the build up of guards trying to get out of the door.
I smirked, walking in his direction. “Hello there vampire.” I whispered in his ear, making him jump.
“Commander Kric.” He sighed, obviously not wanting to speak to me.
“How formal.” I fake pouted. “Come on Marco, we go further back than that.”
“Further back than I care to remember.” Marco added, taking two big steps away from me.
“I deserve that.” I sighed.
“You deserve to be castrated.” He scoffed, crossing his arms.
“funny.” I fake laughed, nudging his shoulder. “Come on, how long are you going to be mad?”
“I’m not mad.” Marco insisted, nudging my shoulder a little more violently than I had nudged his. “Fine, you know what, you’re right. It was my bad for thinking you could not fuck someone in a coat room. That’s like your favorite place.”
“Not coat rooms, just public places in general.” I corrected.
“Same old Kric.” Marco chuckled, seeming to dispel a bit of his anger with that statement. “I don’t know. I’m really not mad anymore. I’ve moved past it. Seeing your face still pisses me off though.”
“Hey, as long as it doesn’t turn you off, it’s all good.” I teased, making him groan and push me.
“Please, no offense, but if I ever sleep with you again it’ll be because i’ve lost my damn mind.” Marco grumbled, making me laugh. “Seriously, what in the hell were we thinking back then? I love you kric, but you’re a damn whore and i’m glad to be done with that.”
“I love you too.” I threw my arm over his shoulder. “You were quite the whore yourself. Seriously, for solars sake the way you could take my co-“
“I meant I love you in a completely platonic, ‘never ever going to see your dick again’ kind of way. You’re a hell of a warrior and friend, but you couldn’t commit to a shampoo, let alone a person.”
“Fair enough.” I fake sighed. “You know, I meant it platonically too. I’m more than happy to pretend we’ve never sixty nined and admire you not for your ass, but for your wonderful ability as a soldier. I do mean that, by the way, you’re an amazing soldier and i’m glad you’re here.”
“Awe, you guys are gonna make me cry.”
Marco and I turned, watching as the Kids rushed into the room, followed by Cyan who had spoken and an irritated looking Michellie.
“I still think you let him off the hook too easy.” Michellie insisted, pushing me aside and wrapping Marco in a tight hug.
“Well, we both fucked up that relationship.” Marco admitted. “He was just the one to literally fuck his way out of it.”
“Good one!” I laughed.
“I knew you’d appreciate that one.” He chuckled. “Anyway, I should get to skulking around the castle like a good guard.”
“Awe, don’t go!” Michellie whined. “Cyan make him stay!”
“We do need a guard following the kids around.” Cyan pointed out. “Just for the next few days.”
“How come?” I asked, lifting Kieran up for a hug and patting Ciel’s head.
“Because, in two very short days, one very special boy will be turning six.” Cyan turned to smile at Ciel. “Isn’t that right honey?”
“I’m gonna have a big party!” Ciel announced, throwing his arms in the air. “There’s going to be all the kids from the kingdom and cake and no lessons all day!”
“Exactly.” Cyan agreed.
“Is that a good idea?” I frowned.
“It is.” Ciel answered for Cyan.
“I know the whole thing that happened a few days ago was very scary, but this has been planned for months. I can’t just uninvite every kid in the kingdom. Plus, Ciel will have extra guards and won’t leave my sight, right Ciel?”
“Right.” Ciel agreed.
“You’re welcome to come.” Cyan added.
“Of course He’s coming!” Ciel cried. “Kric is the coolest ever! He has to come! Right Kric?”
“Duh little man.” I assured him. “You couldn’t keep me away from a party.”
“Or out of the coat check room.” Michellie mumbled.
“There will definitely not be a coat check closet at Ciel’s party.” Cyan declared.
“Believe me, he doesn’t need one.” Marco countered.
“Hey, i’m just here to have a good time and i’m honestly feeling a little attacked right now.” I joked.
“Anyway,” Cyan ignored me, “Would you mind trailing us around, at least until after the party, Marco?”
“Of course not.” He smiled at Cyan. “Anything for you.”
“Thank you. Hopefully, it’ll be an easy few days.” Cyan smiled back, seemingly oblivious to something I would recognize anywhere. You’re imagining it, I told myself.
“Oh! I almost forgot to invite Incendio and the other fairies!” Michellie cried, distracting my scrutinization. “Gosh, they don’t have kids but they’re basically kid’s themselves. There’s no booze, cursing or sexual tension. They’d love this party!”
“That’s true.” Cyan agreed. “Do you think you could go now?”
“Sure. Do you mind watching iris for an hour or so?”
“Of course not.”
“Alright then, i’m going to hurry.”
“Be safe!” Cyan called as the blue bird rushed from the room.
I frowned, irritated that the moment to volunteer myself to go had come and gone so quickly.
Cyan was sitting the kids down, getting ready to start lessons when I finally realized it was too late to chase after Michellie and go myself. I sighed, sitting on a seat beside the kids and stared into space. I drowned out their voices as I thought about the last time I saw Incendio.
His lips had been so hot. His small body had seemed to melt against mine as I attempted to seek out and devour the source of his fiery temperature. Incendio hadn’t pushed me away or objected as I pulled him as close against me as possible. My lips were all over his and then his cheek and then his throat before I realized I was about one more kiss away from turning him around and taking him right there.
I had pulled away, as crazy as it seemed. I had removed my lips from his supple flesh and looked at his slightly dazed face. His eyes had still been closed and he was biting his lip in a way that made me want to bite it too. His chest was heaving as he finally blinked his moss green eyes back open and looked back at me.
“Wow.” was all he said.
“Wow.” I repeated, brushing my thumb gently against his cheek. He was burning hot to the touch and for some reason the burning sensation seemed to turn me on even more. He was like kissing an actual flame, but in the most pleasurable way possible.
“What are you thinking?” Incendio asked, his voice a little out of breath but still ear tingling.
“That I should have kissed you the first time I saw you.” I answered honestly. “That was the best kiss of my life.” I added, leaving out the fact that he had won against all others without even using tongue.
“That was the only kiss of my life.” Incendio chuckled a bit. “I… I am glad it was with you Kric.”
I knew, technically, we had kissed before. We had a habit of getting in each other’s face, so closely that our lips would graze one another, but to brush lips with Incendio and to actually kiss him were two different sensations. Both were, admittedly, mind blowing but… there was nothing like kissing Incendio. Incendio had been so eager, peppering kisses against my lips like he couldn’t quite stand when they weren’t connected. I definitely couldn’t stand the brief moments when my lips weren’t on him. “Me too.” was all I could say.
Then he pulled away, much to my dismay. “I have to go Kric.”
“Go where?” I frowned.
“To the other fairies, to become an elder… and you have to go too.” Incendio told me, standing to his feet.
“What do you mean?” I felt slightly hysterical. “What about-“
“The kiss?” Incendio finished for me. “It was an amazing kiss. I am glad that kiss will be my only kiss.”
“I’m not understanding.” I grabbed his hand. “Incendio, maybe this is a little crazy, but I think-“
“Shhh.” He placed his lips to mine quickly, pulling back before I could deepen it and pulling his hand away. “Kric, you got caught up in our talk of mates and bonding. You forgot that I am just some fairy. You-“
“You’re not some fairy.” I cut him off. “But maybe i’m just some dragon to you right?”
“Kric…”
“Do you want me to leave?”
“We both have to go.”
“That’s not what i asked Incendio.” I sighed. “Are you telling me you want me to go?”
“I-i-“
We mutually heard a branch snap from deeper within the trees and the faint call of “Incendio!”
“I have to go.” Incendio repeated.
“Then go.” I said calmly.
“Kric?” Incendio called as he took a few steps away.
“I have never wanted you to go.” Incendio declared, his expression earnest. “wanting to and having to are not the same.”
I heard Cyan scream, snapping me out of my own memory. I spun around quickly, breathing a sigh of relief when I saw Cyan safe. I looked around, realizing he had been on the ladder trying to retrieve a book from one of the shelves when it had tipped. Fortunately, Marco had caught him and… oddly enough… was still holding him.
“Oh fuck! Thank you Marco! Oh shit that was so scary!” Cyan squeezed Marco tighter.
“No problem. I’m used to this.” Marco chuckled, still not setting Cyan down, something Cyan seemed to finally notice.
“You can let me down now. I’m good.” Cyan assured him.
“I know… it just brings back memories carrying you around.” Marco answered.
Cyan smiled, seeming to remember similar instances as well. “Yeah, the fireman’s carry, the bridal carry, the piggy back ride…” Cyan listed, making them both laugh.
“Yeah, you’re still just as easy to hoist around.” Marco added, bouncing Cyan a bit, causing him to shriek and laugh. “Same old Cyan.”
“And same old Marco.” Cyan chuckled.
“Hey, most things have changed. Just… just one thing hasn’t.” Marco smiled at him again, a smile I knew was definitely not the kind of smile he should be giving his friend/boss.
Cyan, however, remained completely oblivious as always. He gave a friendly smile back, giving a good natured laugh along with the question. “So what hasn’t changed?”
Marco stared at him, something Cyan didn’t seem to notice as he patiently waited for hs answer. “My feel-“
“Fuck!” i cried, secretly grabbing the bottom of the chair of whatever kid was sitting beside me, before flipping him out of his seat quickly. “On no,” I checked to see which kid it was, “Kieran fell! Oh no, is he okay?”
“Kieran?” Cyan’s attention snapped to us as he practically jumped from Marco’s arms to the little boy lying on the ground. He wasn’t hurt, just baffled and a little confused on what had happened. “Kieran? Are you alright baby?”
“I fell.” He said, almost as a question.
“How?” Cyan cried, helping the stunned boy sit up.
“I don’t know. My chair fell somehow.” He looked over at his flipped chair, completely confused.
“What happened Kric?” Cyan turned to me for an explanation.
“I’m not sure. One second he was sitting next to me and then he was on the ground.”I lied, knowing that ‘I saw Marco trying to make the moves on you and Elijah can smell shit like that from miles away’ wasn’t a good excuse for flipping his chair, at least not to Cyan. I, however, knew Elijah and was certain the outcome of someone making a play at Cyan, especially while they were fighting, would end in a fucking bloodbath.
Cyan went back to examining Kieran. I used this opportunity to look at Marco, who was staring wistfully at the doe eyed king. I inwardly groaned.
It would be a miracle if Elijah didn’t just murder us all.
————————–
I was running myself ragged.
“Why do you look like someone chewed you up and spit you out into a trash can?” Michellie asked the day of Ciel’s party.
“I don’t look that bad.” i defended, staring at myself in the hallway mirror. “Dear solar, I do look that bad.”
“Get your cock caught in someone else’s zipper?” Michellie wondered, coming up behind me in the mirror to pull a feather out of my hair. “Seriously, what the hell happened to you?”
“No offense, but you’re probably the last person i’d tell.” I sighed, picking out another feather from my mouth. This is what you get Kric, I thought to myself, when you try to stop your ex bonded from wrestling with the king in bed. I wound up with a face full of feather pillow and an increase in blood pressure when King Elijah walked in a few moments later.
“I may not like you very much Kric, but we’re one big dysfunctional family. So spill.” Michellie insisted, grabbing me by my arm and tugging me down onto the hall floor. “I have about twenty minutes until Iris is out of the bath. So what’s going on?”
“You’re just going to say i’m crazy and tell me to mind my own business.” i countered.
“Try me.” michellie pulled another feather from my ear. “Start with why you’re covered in these.”
“I got in the middle of a very flirtatious pillow fight.” I admitted, dropping my head into my hands. “I enjoy them much more when i’m the one flirting.”
“I’m not following.” michellie frowned.
“Okay, you know what? You’re probably going to tell me i’m imagining it and maybe that’s what i need. Just, hear me out okay?” I rushed out, turning to the blue bird beside me. “I’ve been cock blocking Cyan and Marco since the second he entered the castle. At first, I thought maybe I was imagining it, and maybe I still am, but it’s like every second Marco has Cyan in another compromising position and i’m rushing in the last second with some excuse. I haven’t been going home and I haven’t been able to shift. I mean maybe i’m crazy, right? Marco wouldn’t and Cyan definitely would never…” I trailed off. “It’s just me being weirdly protective of Marco right? Jealous and all that shit?”
Michellie was still frowning, eyes scrunched together in deep thought. “Maybe.” She finally mumbled, turning away from me.
“What? What do you mean maybe?” I cried, turning her back to face me. “No! Tell me i’m being manic and imagining everything and to mind my own business!”
She sighed loudly, closing her eyes to block me out. “Okay so… what i’m about to tell you is seriously top secret and i’m only telling you because I think I have to. Only three people in existence know. You absolutely can’t tell Cyan or Marco or anyone. And you can’t freak out. I mean it. Do you understand Kric?”
“You’re making me nervous.” I groaned, but agreed. “What is it?”
“So… So when Cyan was reborn, Solar told Elijah and I a lot of things. It was probably a lot to take in. Actually, I think Elijah might have glossed over this bit of information completely.” Michellie divulged, her eyes darting up and down the deserted hall. “Basically, Cyan and Elijah are soul mates, meant for each other beyond a reasonable doubt. “
“I know that Michellie.”
“Well do you know that Solar didn’t know that?” Michellie asked, shutting me up. “When souls are in their vapor form, it’s not always easy to tell which soul isn’t meant for who. Solar took pity on Cyan, whose soul had been alone for so long, and tried to make him a temporary mate just for this lifetime.”
“I don’t understand.”
“Elijah was a vampire Kric. He hadn’t been reborn in generations. Cyan hadn’t found him in such a long time… so Solar thought it would be okay to play with two souls and make them feel drawn to one another. Solar didn’t plan on Elijah finding Cyan. It changed everything.” Michellie tried to explain, but I was still lost. “Gosh kric, the souls she played with were Cyan and Marco! Solar tried to bind them together in Cyan’s last life as replacement soul mates! Thankfully, Cyan met Elijah and the spell was broken. Once they met each other, they were all they could see… I was put in charge of turning humans and I tried to make sure Marco stayed human so he could live his lifetime and then have the connection broken when he was reincarnated, but Marco was changed into a vampire. He didn’t die and so… his connection technically never broke.”
“What does that mean then?” I asked.
“I don’t know exactly, but I figure that since Marco never found his real mate, his connection to Cyan is still there. He still feels drawn to him. He can’t help it.” Michellie inferred. “And please don’t take any offense to this, but that’s probably why he was so eager to bond with you in the first place. Marco doesn’t know why he feels connected to Cyan, but i’m pretty sure he’s smart enough to try to ignore it. He wanted to move on and you were a pretty good distraction. That’s why he transferred away from the palace after you guys ended. He needed to be distracted from cyan and once you were gone, his feelings just kept getting stronger. It was probably easier for him when he’s far away.”
“But now he’s back and the feelings are getting worse.” I guessed.
“Exactly.” michellie sighed.
We sat silently for a few moments, both at a loss for words. “Elijah will kill him if he finds out.”
“No he wouldn’t. Plus, Cyan wouldn’t let him even if he tried.” Michellie disagreed.
“I’ve known Elijah for centuries.” I started, staring at the wall in front of me. “The man you and Cyan know, he’s a much kinder version of the person I first met. He lived with Elizabeth for a long time and that woman tormented everyone, even those close to her. Still, she took him in when he had nothing. His loyalty to her was fierce and unrivaled by anything or anyone. If she told him to lie or cheat or kill… well that’s what he did. The Elijah you know now would be unrecognizable compared to the Elijah that existed before Cyan. I’m not saying that to look down on him. In fact, I admire King Elijah more than any other man i’ve ever known. He’s strong, tough and willing to do what it takes to survive. That has never changed about him. So when you say Elijah wouldn’t kill to keep Cyan exactly where he wants him, I have to tell you that you’re wrong. Elijah has killed thousands for Elizabeth and he didn’t even really like her. Then he killed her. The woman he owed everything to, that he gave everything to, meant nothing once she threatened what he had with Cyan. That’s how much Elijah loves him. That’s how far Elijah would go. That’s how dangerous it is to try to steal from the King.”
——————–
“Thank Solar you’re back.” Michellie cried, grabbing me as soon as I entered the palace. She had agreed to keep an eye on Marco and Cyan while I went to get ready for the party tonight. “They’re like dogs in heat. I contemplated turning a water hose on them.”
“Where are they now? Why aren’t you with them?” I questioned, scanning the entrance way.
“Well Marco is watching Ciel like a hawk and Cyan was whisked away by Elijah to play king. It’s the first break i’ve gotten since you left.” She filled me in. “First, Marco got a little grabby while giving Ciel and Kieran a bath. I nudged in between them that time. After that Cyan had to get dressed and put on all the royal jewelry and Marco lingered a little too much while helping him. Cyan is oblivious as always, just like when we were teenagers.”
“You sure we shouldn’t tell him?” I asked, walking into the ballroom with Michellie on my arm.
“Cyan would just tell us we’re imagining things.” Michellie answered, allowing me to lead her toward the head table, directly beside Cyan’s throne.
Cyan was sitting in the large, decorated chair. Elijah stood beside him, arm draped across the top of the seat protectively. They were doing an amazing job of smiling like everything was perfectly fine. Cyan was draped with heavy, golden chains and jewels as he always was for important events. Some had been gifts from Solar and others were gifts from the lords and ladies of the sun kingdom. The largest, shiniest, and by far most valuable Jewel was hanging from his neck, a gift from the goddess on his coronation day. It was funny, in a way, to watch Cyan be a king when most days he was wrestling two little boys into pajamas.
Still, he radiated strength and prestige. I watched as noblemen approached him, not daring to place their foot on his throne steps. They all kneeled obediently, offering their wrists to the kings until Elijah commanded them to stand. The kings were well respected and loved by everyone at this party. I slowly let my guard fall, taking my eyes from the kings and scanning the rest of the room.
I looked over toward the kids, who took up half of the ball room and were being mystified by an elemental who was showing off water tricks to entertain them. “Where is Iris?” I said aloud, turning toward Michellie.
Michellie’s face fell. “Iris is upstairs.”
“Why?”
“There are too many people.” She pointed out. “If word got out that we had the only merchild in existence in the palace, Margarette would come and take him away.”
I nodded in understanding. “He must be lonely up there by himself.”
“Incendio is with him.” Michellie said more to herself than to me. I tried not to show an obvious reaction to her words. “They have a really special bond.”
“How so?”
“They’re both one of a kind.” Michellie explained, smiling to herself. “They’re both going to spend most of their life hiding. Incendio makes Iris see the beauty of his existence, no matter how difficult it is.”
“He’s pretty amazing.” I added, unsure if I was talking about Iris or Incendio.
“Kric!”
I looked up as a small body rushed me, practically climbing into my lap. “Hi Kieran.” I smiled, patting his head. I still felt a little guilty about purposely knocking him on his ass. “Having fun?”
“Yeah.” he said, but his words weren’t all that convincing. “Michellie?”
“Yeah?” Michellie asked, turning her full attention to the little human in my lap.
“Can I go see Iris? I want to bring him snacks.” Kieran begged.
“What? Are you sure you don’t want to stay at the party? What about Ciel?”
“Ciel is busy.” Kieran explained. “He’s a prince.”
“Well… okay… let me go tell your dads.” Michellie conceded, turning to me. “Walk him up okay?”
“Alright.” i agreed, sparing one last look on the kings. They were still radiating power, Elijah hovering beside Cyan as if ready to break anyone who attempted to smudge the most precious Jewel.
~Incendio’s p.o.v.~
“Do you like being different, Incendio?” Iris asked, his blue eyes transfixed by the intricate carvings in his dresser.
“No.” I told him honestly. “Do you?”
“No,” He answered, “but that’s because I don’t normally feel different. Just now… I feel different.”
“It is alright to be different.” I assured him. “Each difference is a blessing from our goddess.”
“Do you feel blessed?” Iris countered, his six year old eyes scrutinizing me.
“I do.” I answered honestly again. “Do you?”
“Sometimes… sometimes the goddess reminds me.” Iris said softly, just as someone knocked on his door. “Come in.”
The door was pushed open and in walked the small werewolf, whose past and future were smudged with mystery. He jumped onto the bed, his artificial human scent tickling my nose. “I brought you cake.” He announced, setting a plate on the bed and pushing it toward Iris cautiously. “And Juice.”
His escort closed the door and approached the bed, setting a juice box on the night stand. “Incendio.” kric acknowledged me.
“Kric.” I mumbled.
“Why aren’t you at the party?” Iris frowned at the boy across from him.
“It’s a lot of people.” Kieran grumbled. “Why aren’t you?”
“Same.” Iris looked down at the cake. “Where is your piece?”
“Oh.” Kieran realized. “I couldn’t carry two.”
Iris sighed in fake exasperation before slicing the piece in two and handing the fork to Kieran. “Eat your side first.”
“It’s okay. It’s yours.”
“I can’t eat it all. Merpeople can’t eat too much sweets.” Iris countered.
I felt the bed dip beside me as Kric invaded my personal space. I found my body unwilling to create any more distance. My mind was unable to focus on the conversing children as Kric’s presence clouded my mind, making me dizzy.
The room door flung open. “Am I late?” Michellie cried, dragging the large cursed man into the room. “Guess who showed up Iris?”
“Father.” Iris cheered, sounding more like a child than I was used to. He stood up on the bed, launching himself toward the tall man.
“Iris. i missed you.” Bruftus whispered, his voice still loud enough for us all to hear. The ancient cursed one cradled Iris close to him, his eyes full of adoration. Iris buried his face in his adoptive father’s neck, his parents circling him eagerly. It was obvious that Iris was blessed in the most unique way: as a blessing to his parents.
“Oh! Before I forget, Cyan wants to see you Incendio. He told me to send you now.” Michellie informed me.
——————–
“Wait!” kric caught me just outside the entrance to the ball room.
“I must go see to the king.” I said quickly, trying to step around him.
“In a second.” He assured me, looking up and down the empty hall before pressing me against the wall. His lips were on mine instantly, smothering any protests I might have tried to make. While my mind still held some of my senses, my body had completely given into him.
I clung to his expensive suit, trying to feel the heat i knew I would find if we were able to touch skin to skin. My being craved the burning sensation of his body against mine and growled internally at the interruption our suits made.
When he pulled away, he was smiling at me. It was the same smile he gave me the last time we kissed. It was that same smile that made me contemplate ignoring the future and focusing on how handsome my mate was right now. “I needed to do that.”
“It was a foolish thing to do.”
“Then we’re both being foolish.” He pointed out. “I’m foolish for making you kiss me and you’re foolish for pretending you didn’t want to.”
“I am foolish.” I agreed. “You have made me a foolish person.”
“Do you hate that?”
“Two fools can only fail. Neither one has the foresight to prevent it.” I said instead, my finger running along his chin.
“Only fools fall in love.” Kric quoted. “Do you think that’s what’s happening to me? It’s an emotion i’m not familiar with.”
“It would not matter Kric. What is doomed to fail, will fail no matter how foolish we are.” I insisted.
“Would you hate me if I said i’m fool enough not to care?” He asked, his flirtation skewering my heart. “If I said I was fool enough to not walk away, no matter how badly we fail, what would you say?”
“I would say your track record speaks differently.” I spat, watching as his face fell. I hadn’t wanted to throw his past relationship failures in his face, but I had grown desperate. My entire existence revolted against my refusing of my mate and I knew I was bound to give in the longer he pursued me.
The sound of guests approaching had him pulling away from me and I took that chance to escape into the party. I scanned the room for Cyan, who was currently dancing with a familiar man. I recognized him instantly as one of the few people on the planet that I disliked for absolutely no reason at all.
Kric caught up to me, following my gaze to Cyan and the Vampire named Marco. His eyes then darted to King Elijah, who was growing more and more agitated with each passing second. I watched the futures swirl in my mind, almost all ending with a violent scene as King Elijah lashed out.
The second Elijah moved to approach the dancing pair, Kric left me. He conspicuously rushed forward, tapping Cyan on the shoulder and asking him to intervene just as Elijah reached them as well. Cyan was shoved in Elijah’s direction as Kric took Marco’s hand.
I watched passively, or as passively as I could. I knew my emotions were betraying me when Fiera approached me, asking me if anything were wrong. Kric spun Marco, making the vampire laugh. They were just dancing, the movements seemingly platonic. They were no longer bonded. I knew that. The marks from their bond were simply scars at this point, having long since been abandoned.
Kric made eye contact with me, his expression showing concern as I walked toward them. My body was moving on it’s own, desperate to stake a claim on what was rightfully mine. At the last moment I turned, approaching the kings instead.
They had moved to a corner, their body language warning away any eavesdroppers. King Elijah was leaning over king Cyan, the tension between them making me pause a few feet away. When Cyan noticed me, he smiled. I smiled back, bowing to both of them.
Their silent anger was still there, nearly crushing me under the weight of their misunderstandings. I was shocked however, as their anger dissipated in my presence, that some anger remained. My anger. It lingered inside of me, reminding me that it would not be forgotten. I could pretend all I wanted, it told me, but I would not escape the doom that would befall all fools.
