This’ll be Vic again

I walked as quickly as I could, trying and nearly failing to stay caught up with Austin’s long legs. There was door that the he went straight for and I followed hesitantly when he pushed it open, it led down stairs. “Have you been here before?” I asked in a whisper. I didn’t know why, but the eeriness of the place made me feel like I had to be quiet, it was weird.

“No,” Austin whispered back- apparently he felt it too. “I’ve never even heard of this place before. Alan’s never said anything about it either.” The stairs they were walking down were steep and narrow, the walls around them close. “None of this really makes sense.”

It was maybe ten minutes later and we were still walking down the stairs, though there had been some flat ground and lots of turns I couldn’t help but to wonder how far under the ground we were. I also noticed that the farther we got down the colder it became. It made me tighten my arms around myself and wonder if Kellin was freezing. What if he was dying? What if he was already dead? I couldn’t help but let bad thoughts and questions float around my mind. Nothing could stop worries; Nothing except seeing Kellin safe and having him in my arms.

Austin suddenly paused making me stop and look up. In front of us was level ground and a door at the end of a hallway. The lighting was dim and made the atmosphere scary, almost dangerous. The cold and the dark seemed to make everything worse.

Austin looked back at me, his brown eyes darker in the hallway and he finally took the last few steps and opened the door, letting another gust of cold air wash over our already chilled bodies. The room we stepped into was large and spacious with bright LCD lamps hanging overhead.  Several doors were leading out of the room, all of them closed and most likely locked. “Shit,” Austin cursed and looked around. I counted eight doors total, nine if I included the one we just came from.

“Were do you think these-” Suddenly one of the doors to our left slammed open and a mess of a Tony ran out. His usually coiffed hair in disarray and his clothes were dirty and worn. The panicked look in his eye faded as soon as he saw us and the next thing I new he was in my arms. “Vic!”

I wrapped my arms around him and squeezed, the hug I was giving surely suffocating.  “Tone,” I breathed out, happy to see him safe. “I’ve been so worried.”

“Thank God you’re here. I just got out of this room they locked me in. It was awful! It’s so fucking cold here, and they’ve barely fed me.” He rambled as he stumbled back  from me so I could have some room.

“Listen, I’m happy you’re safe but do you know where Kellin is?” I said after putting my hands on his shoulders and looking him straight in the, trying desperately to get him focused. He nodded and looked at one of the doors to our direct right. “Yeah, I’m pretty sure he’s through that door.” I grinned slightly and nodded at Austin who just gave me  a look I couldn’t read.

After I pulled the door open I realized it got even colder and that there was a long hallway that lead to a room. I was getting sick of the cold and all the doors. It was slightly excessive. Everything was pale white and hard looking.

“So, does anyone else know where we are right now?” Tony asked, his eyes on the floor. I was about to answer when Austin shot out a quick no, this made me give him a sharp look. I mouthed ‘what the fuck?’ and he just turned away and ignored it so I could turn back to Tony who looked almost… Relieved? I was so confused by everything.

By the time we got to the end I was shivering and could faintly see my breath. The room was open and inside I could see long metal tables and shiny shelves that held what seemed to be glass jars. In each one was a, I nearly puked when we got closer and I could small unborn fetuses floating around in thick looked liquid. Each was in a stage on growth and had what looked to be the beginning of ears and a tail. Bile rose in my throat and I swallowed thickly. “Fuck,” Austin said as he took a few more steps. “I’ve never seen any of this before. This is wrong.”

I cringed and turned back around to search the rest of the room. There was a cork board covered in pictures, all of which was Kellin at different moments in his life. Some of him as a baby, then toddler, next was child hood then tween. The teenage pictures were the worse because he looked downright awful and sick in all of them.

Austin suddenly called from across the room, “Vic, I found him!” In an instant I was beside him and saw that he was listing a sheet off of what had looked like a normal box, but without the cover it was clearly a large dog cage. My stomach twisted when I saw the beaten and scrawny form of Kellin curled in the corner, seemingly passed out. “Kitten.” I whispered sadly as I bent down fumbling with the lock and nearly crying when realizing it need a code. Austin leaned down next to me and rattled the door. Kellin twitched slightly but otherwise lay still.

“Tony-” I began to talk to my friend who had been awfully quiet. I turned to see him standing there, right behind us with a disturbing look on his face. He smirked and said, “You idiots. I’m so happy you both decided to trust me. Wrong choice.” My mouth dropped in shock.

“Gerard, get in here!”

Ten minutes later and Austin and I were both hand-cuffed to the bars of Kellin’s cage. My kitten was still passed out and I was worried, and scared, and worried, and angry. So many emotions and all them caused by my bastard of a friend.

“How could you?” I hissed venomously.

Tony smirked from where he stood next to Gerard. Both now wearing lab coats and Tony’s hair fixed- it had all been an act. “Well, it’s simple really. My research means the world to me, and when I’d learned of what Gerard here was doing three years ago I wanted in. I worked with him and watched Kellin from behind the scenes. Then, Kellin escaped. It was just coincidence that you found him. He’d never seen me before. I’d always wanted to teach Kellin more- let him learn math and proper English but no one else agreed with me. That’s the only reason you got to keep him as long as you had, because I wanted to test my stuff. I got far enough along so I decided to return him, simple as that.”

“You asshole!” I screamed, trying to rip my arms away from the bars. “You fucking bastard! We’ve been friends since we were children and you still decide to do this? To betray me?” Tony cocked his head to the side and laughed ruefully, “Pretty much.”

Suddenly, I heard shuffling beside me and turned to see Kellin abused body struggle to sit up. Most of his face was covered by his greasy hair and his ears drooped. “Vic?” His tired voice asked, almost in a scared tone. “Yeah Kitten, I’m here.”  I saw him smile slightly before Tony interrupted by pulling a gun out of his waistband. “Well, I guess this is it. Say your goodbyes.”

“What?” I exclaimed, my voice panicked. “Well, you and Austin know everything so I have to kill you. Sorry.” He said in voice that showed he wasn’t sorry at all.

The gun was pointed directly at me and Kellin began to freak out, his high voice cracking as he pleaded for my life while I tried to move, but couldn’t do to my restrictions. “Kellin, I  love you.” I said when I heard the click of the bullet sliding into place. I heard a loud gun shot sound and a scream, but absolutely no pain. Nothing, only a wetness on my face and neck. I cracked my eyes to see the person I once called my friend lying face down on the cold tile floor, a pool of blood spreading from the hole in his abdomen.

“Oh my God.” I whispered as I realized what was on me- blood. Tony’s blood.

My wide eyes turned to the door where Alan, Mike, and Jaime stood. The short ginger was the one who stood in front, his hands held in front of him, gun clasped in his fingers. I then looked to Gerard who was now distressed, a look of terror on his face. His pale hand reached his waistband and the next thing I knew another shot was fired at him, but he swiftly dodged and lunged towards Kellin’s cage. I panicked when he unlocked the door and grabbed my boyfriend out of the small space. My heart stopped as Gerard gripped him around the waist and put the barrel of the gun to Kellin’s temple.

Now that Kellin wasn’t in a crouched position I could see his awful condition. He was even more pale than usual and mostly black and blue. Since he wasn’t wearing a shirt I could see just how skinny he was. Every rib could be counted and his collar bones were extremely visible. His lips were blue and cheeks red from how cold it was.

“If anybody moves I shoot.” The red head threatened in a cold voice. Alan froze. My mind was in overdrive as I looked at Kellin’s scared face and listened to his terrified whimpers.

Gerard was mostly turned in a way to where his back was completely to Austin who I had just noticed was doing something with the cuffs binding him. I moved my eyes away from the taller man and looked at Alan. He had his gun pointing at the ground and had trained his attention on Kellin.

I had no idea what to do.

Gerard tightened his arms slightly Kellin cried  out, his face scrunching in pain. “Let him the fuck go!” I yelled, wanking and twisting at my arm. “Stop hurting him!”

Gerard turned his head to smirk at me- that was when Austin attacked. He jumped from where he’d been cuffed and tackled the red head from the side. The gun clattered to the ground and a shot fired, the bullet hitting the far wall. Everything seemed to move so fast after that and I could barely keep up. Mike and Jaime were crouched beside me, my brother hitting the metal hand cuffs with a pocket knife. Alan had run to Kellin and pushed him away from the fight that ensued between Austin and Gerard.

“Stop!” Alan yelled in a slightly frightened but determined voice as he pointed his gun at Gerard. The fighting stopped and Austin gripped the neck of the scientist’s shirt, hauling him up and keeping him in place.

I diverted my eyes from the two and crawled forward when Jaime and Mike managed to break the chain of the cuffs. I gently grabbed Kellin and pulled him into my arms, pulling him close to share my body heat. The cold was making him sick and I nearly cried from how bad he looked. It was awful, I wanted to make Gerard pay. Though, even knowing now that Tony had helped with all of this, I couldn’t help but mourn the death of my friend.

“K-Kellin loves you.” My kitten stuttered out as he trembled from the pain, exhaustion, and cold. “I love you too, Kells.” I kissed his hot forehead and sighed, just happy to have in my arms. “I’m never going to let anything bad happen to you again.”

A noise drew my attention away from Kellin and I looked to where Tony’s body lay, only to him loosely gripping the gun he’d held earlier and pointing towards us. His brown eyes were barely open and a cruel smirk decorated his face. “I’m going out with a bang.” Then he pulled the trigger and I watched as Kellin stiffened in pain as the bullet ripped through his stomach.
