Jake’s POV:

I caught Elena in my arms and laid her on my lap.

“Wake up, Elena!” I called her name in panic. I didn’t know what to do, everyone was downstairs busy at dinner.

She gazed at me before closing her eyes completely.

I couldn’t comprehend why she had fallen unconscious abruptly. The sight of her lying motionless body on the floor was frightening me.

I picked her up in my arms in bridal style and laid her down on the bed. I placed my hand on her forehead; it was cold as the rest of her body. I went to her washroom and brought the glass of water then splashed some on her face. She made a noise then turned to her right sluggishly.

“Elena,” I said stroking her cheek.

“Go away,” She mumbled inaudibly.

I sighed in relief that she was conscious but I wanted to make sure she was fine before leaving.

“Elena, are you fine? Should I call your parents?” I asked her in concern.

Her eyes popped open at my question and sheave me a bewildered look then quickly sat up on the bed.

“What are you doing in my room?”

“I was in your room when you fainted. I am just making sure you’re fine before leaving.”

Her hands fist the sheets in anger.

“Why do you care, Jake?” She asked me sarcastically. “Don’t you think it’s wrong to take care of me? I am your best friend’s sister,” She added.

I took a deep breath, trying to calm down my nerves.

“Elena, what did you expect me to do? To leave you on the floor?” I asked her.

“Yes, you should’ve left me on the floor because taking care of someone is a crime, isn’t it?”

She looked annoyed and mad.

“Okay, that’s it. Next time, if you would pass out I will leave you on the floor,” I said, showing my hand in surrender.

The look she was given me now was the same she had on her face the day we first met. I remembered that I found her glares cute. I felt my mouth twitching in a smile.

“That’s what I’ll expect from you after today,” She said and got up from the bed. She made her way to the vanity table and combed her hair.

“Where are you going?” I asked her worried.

She turned to me and gave me the look that says are you mad?

“I’m going back to join dinner. I was supposed to be enjoying tonight.”

I wanted to tell her that she should be resting because there must be something wrong with her.

“You fell unconscious just a few seconds ago and your body was cold. You should take rest while I call a doctor,”

“I’m perfectly fine. Don’t pretend to care,”

She pulled out a bottle of medicine from the drawer and popped two tablets in her mouth.

I felt my heart twisting in my chest when I saw her taking medicines. Suddenly, I was scared.

“Are you ill, Elena?”

She opened her bedroom door and walked out, ignoring my question completely.

I clenched my jaw in irritation and followed her out.

She made her way downstairs to go to the backyard but I took the hold of her wrist and pulled her back. I didn’t realize my force was too strong. She collided with my chest which knocked my breath out.

“What are you doing, Jake? Let me go,” She said, staring into my eyes.

I stared at her in a trance and forgot what I was going to say. She was beautiful even though she looked angry and glaring daggers at me.

“I asked you something and you didn’t answer me. Why did you take those medicines?”

“Jake, stop! It doesn’t work like this. If I am not supposed to care about you then you’ve no right to care about me,” She said gritting her teeth.

She was infuriating me. I wanted to tell her that I was allowed to care for her. I was allowed to care for everybody in her family because they were the only people left in my life that I could call mine.

I placed my hand on her back and pulled her closer, trapping her between my arms.

“You can stay right here in my arms as long as you want because I’m not going to let you go. Now tell me what were those drugs for?” I asked her.

She stared at me and her face softened.

“I take those pills to keep my serenity. After my parents’ accident, I was diagnosed with vasovagal syncope; it’s nothing serious but occurs when I feel extreme emotions like excitement or distress. It’s nothing to worry about,” She explained.

“You never told me that you had this. I was so worried when you passed out,” I said.

She leaned closer and whispered in my ear. “You have been gone for a long time, Jake. Many things have changed in the past six years.”

“I can’t agree more. You’ve have changed a lot.”

“I’m all grown up now. Not a silly girl anymore.”

“I’ve to disagree with you here. You’re still a silly girl,” I said with the amused smile.

She slapped my chest playfully then attempted to move but I didn’t let her go.

I stared at her not knowing what was happening to my genius brain. I wanted to hold her longer in my arms because she felt perfect.

We heard the sound of someone clearing throat loudly and jumped apart.

Alyssa was standing there looking at us with her wide sapphire color eyes. Her gaze held amusement and confusion.

“I was coming to check on you, Elena. You suddenly disappeared,” Alyssa said staring at Elena.

“Yeah, I wasn’t feeling well. I just went to my room to freshen up. But I’m fine now, let’s go back.”

Elena dragged Alyssa with her, not even looking back at me once.

I had no idea what was wrong with me. Why didn’t I want to let her go? Why did my heart begin to beat faster? Why couldn’t I stop staring at her?

I hadn’t felt this way since I lost Hanna. She was the only woman who could make me crazy.

Why it had to be her? I asked myself but didn’t receive any answer.

“I needed a drink,” I mumbled to myself.

I went back to the gathering and picked the glass of wine. Without thinking much I chucked the entire glass down. Unintentionally, my eyes searched for her once again.

Noah made his way to me.

“Where did you disappear?” He asked with a frown on his face.

“I was talking to Elena,” I told him the truth because I had nothing to hide.

“Where is she now?” He asked me.

“With your wife,” I said.

He nodded his head and then the dinner was served. Noah stayed with me, he introduced me to his cousin and some of his friends.

I felt someone’s gaze on my back and turned to find her staring at me. When our eyes connected, she looked away from me tucking her hair behind her ear.

Suddenly, her innocent move appeared seductive. I realized that my feelings for her were changing. Now I was seeing her as an attractive woman, she was not a small girl with pigtails anymore.

I reminded myself that she was out of my league. She was my best friend’s sister and I should stop myself before things get out of my hands. I didn’t want to lose the people who treated me like their own. I decided to leave before I would do something stupid and regret later.

Unfortunately, on my way out Mr. Edward stopped me.

“Where do you think you are going, son?”

I looked at Mr. Edward sheepishly.

“I was leaving. I have a meeting with the board of directors in the morning so I thought I should take a look at some reports tonight,” I said.

“That’s a good excuse, but I think you can stay for a while unless you’re still following your mom’s curfew,” He said with the small laugh.

I was amazed at how he still remembered that my mom set the curfew for me even though I was eighteen.

“I had to save you both from your mothers when you and Brandon used to break that curfew playing video games or practicing for a football game,” he said.

“Thanks for that. If you weren’t there I can only imagine what she would do to me,” I said recalling about my mother.

“She wasn’t that bad, was she?” Mr. Edward asked looking confused.

I cursed myself in my head. They had no idea about my relationship with my mother and what a monster she was.

“Now you’re both grown up, leaving a party without my permission,” he complained.

“I can stay as long as you want me.”

“That’s exactly what I wanted to hear. Now, I want to introduce you to some of my friends.”

Mr. Edward introduced me to some of his friends. He inquired about my business, my stay in Boston and invited me to his office for a meeting.

Mrs. Edward called him and he had to leave so I decided to say my farewell to them. Mrs. Edward gave me a hug and told me she was happy to see me back.

I ran my eyes to see if I could find her. I just wanted to see her last time before leaving. I gazed around and caught the sight of her standing with the same guy who she was talking earlier with the sickly sweet smile on her face.

I didn’t know who he was but she looked quite comfortable around him.

He mumbled something in her ear and she blushed. I didn’t know why the sight of her standing with that guy made me furious. I clenched my fist to stop myself from marching towards him and throwing the punch on his boyish face.

She smiled at him and indicated him to follow her inside the house.

I screamed at myself to leave the place but what I did was completely opposite of my thoughts. I followed them inside the house and watched them going inside the guest room. She closed the door and I lost all my senses. Before I could stop myself from idiocy, I was marching towards the room and knocking at the door, loudly.

She opened the door and came out with a confused look on her face.

“What are you doing here?”

“The real question is what are you doing here?” I asked her, furiously.

She raised her perfect eyebrows at my question.

“This is where I live, Jake,” She replied sarcastically.

“No…I mean what were you doing in the room?” I asked her.

“Sam needed to use the washroom and I was showing him where it is,” She said nonchalantly.

The anger that was running through my veins a few seconds ago vanished and I felt utterly stupid.

“I’m sorry,” I said and tried to leave but she pinned me with the icy glare.

“Why did you follow us?” She asked me taking a step closer to me.

I felt uncomfortable at the way she was looking at me. She looked like a lioness that was ready to hunt her prey.

“I was looking for Sam,” I lied.

“You don’t even know him so why were you looking for him?” She asked me with irritation clear on her face.

“Since you have spent your whole evening talking to him, I thought he must be a great guy and I should introduce myself to him,” I said with the smirk, pretending to be presumptuous.

“I can spend my time with anyone I want. You’ve no right to meddle in my life,” She said, looking angry and hot.

I’m calling her hot now. Earlier I called her attractive. What the hell is wrong with me? I asked myself.

Focus, Jake! You’re having an argument here. I reminded myself.

“You didn’t say that when you kissed me,” I said, taking a step closer to her.

“What?” She asked, looking flustered.

Damn! Why she has to be so cute? I asked myself.

“When you kissed me you didn’t warn me that I’ll lose my freedom to be rational. But I am warning you, princess, you’re playing with fire,” I whispered in her ear and planted a kiss on her cheek close to her mouth.

She just stood there like a monument watching me when I left her house.
