Her rather joyful and pleasant day had taken a turn for the worst when she had received a phone call from Nam-gi’s school urgently calling her presence to retrieve her brother.

Nari had glanced at Geon-woo, panic seeping into her expression and he faltered at her sudden urgency and the way she had tensed at his side. He questioned her with a gentle nod, and she merely shook her head, claiming she was on her way, andย slipped her phone back into her pocket with a rather shaky movement.

A thousand thoughts were racing through her mind, and she barely got the words out before Geon-woo had taken her hand in his and guided them to the school. He was insistent he accompany her, not only because she seemed distressed, but because he also had grown fond of the youngest Byun sibling. Like his sister he was too adorable to resist. And it slightly inflated his ego to know he always had a fan in his girlfriend’s younger brother.

Nari followed after him rather absent from reality. Nam-gi is in a fight, the woman had said. You need to come quick. But that was impossible, her brother would never lower himself to such standard unless he was provoked. And if he was in a fight, someone was about to face her scorn.

When she arrived at the school, she could vaguely make out a few teachers and parents with idling students circling around the entrance.

Geon-woo gently pushed through, keeping his arm around Nari as they made their way through the herd to the centre where loud voices were rising over the complaining ones.

“Miss Byun”

Nari turned as a middle-aged woman with cropped brown hair and tired eyes pushed through the crowd towards her with urgency.

“Mrs Min, what is going on? Where is Nam-gi?” Nari asked, her tone rushed as she took a step forward. Geon-woo’s hand remained steady on her lower back the entire time as Mrs Min led the way back to the commotion.

“I don’t know what happened but he and Beom-seok got into an argument and now Mr Hong has a bruise on his face and his parents are threatening to sue you” she said her words coming out in huffs of consumed panic and Nari felt her blood still in her body.

Nam-gi had punched another boy?

Nari rushed forward and a path cleared until she saw her brother, his hands trembling at his sides with tears pooling in his eyes that glared furiously at a boy with a nasty bruise on his cheek being held by his shoulders by a furious mother and agitated father. Their voices were obnoxious as they yelled at the young boy whose knuckles had grown a bright pink.

“Nam-gi!” Nari called and the boy turned at the sound of his sister’s voice. His tears fell at her call. She crashed into him, pulling him to her side as she brushed his hair back from his face while his arms wrapped around her waist while he buried himself into her stomach.

”Are you hurt?” she asked softly. He shook his head in denial.

“Who are you? His mother?” the woman with auburn hair and lips fitted in a snarl barked at Nari who held onto her brother tighter. She could feel the animosity radiating off the Hong family members.ย

“I told you, he has no mother.” Beom-seok snarled, the words coming out in a bitter jab and Nari felt her brother tense in her arms. She had a bad feeling she knew what this argument was about.

“Excuse me?” Nari guffawed, lips slightly parting in astonishment. ” What did you just say?”

” Is this his sister?” the woman questioned distastefully, eyeing Nari up and down and promptly ignoring her antipathy ” Good, you’re here. Explain to me why your brother hurt my little boy”

Nari gaped at the audacity. ” I’m sorry but my brother would’ve never touched your filthy son unless he provoked him. Which seems more befitting of this situation” Nari accused.ย

The woman’s screech was loud enough to bleed her ears dry. ” Honey did you hear that” she cried to her husband.

“I told you their family is good for nothing. I didn’t even do anything besides tell him the truth and then he punched me.” Beom-seok cried and his mother was quick to smother him, shushing him with lips painted red and Nari could not believe her eyes. Beom-seokย  was staring at them with a wicked gleam in his eyes, cradled in his mother’s arms, before letting his face fall into a sullen boy on the verge of tears.

“He’s lying” Nam-gi muttered. “He was talking badly about you and that we don’t have a mum and dad and that’s why I’m at the orphanage. I tried to explain but he-”

Nari had felt the familiar hatred bore in her veins as she tugged her brother closer, her fire fuelled eyes turned to the family with a heated glare so strong it radiated hostility. If possible, the Hong family would be ash at her feet.ย

” You son of a-” Nari usually prided herself for her composure, but the way Beom-seok was smugly standing before them, the rotten scowl on the woman’s face as if Nari and her brother were dirt beneath her shoe and the arrogant attitude the father carried as if they were beneath them- Nari felt her composure slip. She went to yell at them, profanities on the tip of her tongue but the father cut her off. He had taken two large steps forward, his arm ready to swing but before she could blink, a hand had shot out from beside her.

The man inhaled sharply as Geon-woo’s fingers squeezed his wrist so tight the veins beneath his suit jacket had become prominent in his hands. The look on Geon- woo’s face was nothing if not terrifying.

“I’d rethink that” he warned, his tone threatening and low. Nari hid her satisfaction at the brief flicker of fear across the man’s eyes as he tried wrenching himself out of Geon-woo’s vice grip. ” You and your family have done quite enough” he spat before unclenching his fingers and sending the man back a couple of steps with a harsh shove.

” We will sue” the woman cried while Geon-woo joined her side.

“I’d like to see you try. ” Nari said. ” Your little angel might not be so angelic. Money can only get you so far. So I’d watch your back” she warned, her voice pronounced with finality. ” And never speak to my brother again. You got it” she told Beom-seok who was now watching the three with a fearful sheen. ” Or I’ll show you just how good for nothing we can be”

Nari held onto her brother as she steered him away from gawking eyes while Geon-woo hid his smirk before he bowed. ” I would listen to her. She tends to usually get her way” he grinned. ” And, just a word of advice. Try learning some decency and some manners, It might rub off on him” he told the parents and bowed again. He shot them one last charming smile before joining Nari’s side as they made their leave, leaving behind a rather proud teacher and a stunned family and spectators in their wake

It felt good to fight back.ย
