Geon-woo found himself sat in a rather uncomfortable chair beside Nari’s bed. For the first week since she had been admitted, Geon-woo could not bring himself to touch her. He was too scared that she would disappear from beneath him if he did. The last time he touched her she had felt like a corpse, so cold and pale as if she had been drained of all the life within her, he was terrified to reach out now and feel the same.

It was only in the second week did he get the courage to reach for her hand. He had slowly eased his slightly trembling hand into hers before interlocking their fingers. He had breathed a sigh of relief. Colour had slowing began creeping back into her cheeks and her hand felt warm and the monitor beeped almost as if it knew his heart stopped fleetingly. To ensure he knew she was indeed alive, and he was not dreaming.

He had visited every day thereafter, checking in both of them but lingering at hers. He couldn’t stop staring.

He had been so close to losing her. Had he been late, had she not managed to message him, he may have lost her for good. And that was something he did not ever wish to experience.

It was in these moments, where his thoughts took up most of his time and he’d rather wallow in silence, holding her hand then accepting condolences and reassurances. It was the feeling of loneliness that he came to realise he could not do this without her. He could not continue without Byun Nari by his side. Because he simply did not like her, he loved her.

She became integral, always there and always near. Which is why he needed her to wake so he could tell her. Their kiss replayed over and over and it became his tether. He wished to kiss her again, over and forever and never let go. He wished to love her, openly and without fear of losing her. But for that he needed her to wake. To wake and show him her pretty eyes and smile in the way he loved so much. To tease him for being dramatic, and to drown in her alluring laugh.

To look at him as if she loved him too.

Geon-woo pulled his chair closer and held her hands in his, he lifted it to rest below his chin. His smiled faltered and he couldn’t look away from her face, eyes closed and merely sleeping.

“I really don’t like you for this” he said, eyes lingering on her closed ones as if he stared at her long enough she’d wake to chastise him.

” How is it that you managed to give me the best possible night and then turn it into the worst.” His words came out shakily and soft. ” You don’t understand how it felt, to see you like that. And I hope you never feel the way I did in that moment” he closed his eyes as he pressed their conjoined hands to his forehead.

” I was going to ask you to be my girlfriend, I mean you can’t give a man the best kiss of his life and not expect me to completely crumble before you” he chuckled meekly. ” Which is why I need you to wake up and give me your answer, because I can’t keep living like this” he took a deep breath, their hands lowering to rest on the bed while his other went to caress her hair, before lightly stroking her cheekbone.

“There’s something you need to know” he said before taking a deep breath to compose himself. ” I need you to know that I don’t just like you Byun Nari” he inhaled hesitantly before smiling certainly ” I love you. I really do. I think I have deep down from the moment you bumped into me. It only sent me into a frenzy every time you looked at me, through me. When you smiled. I had never seen anyone so beautiful. You are beautiful. Nari, this is torturous, I cannot handle seeing you like this so please put me out of this torment and wake up. I need you to tell me you love me too because I’ve been so restless. You have consumed every waking thought and every dream since that night in the pool and this feeling of yearning for someone and not knowing if they feel the same is cruel. Nari, you have helped me in more ways than one, you saved myself and my family on more than one occasion. You are it for me. But then” he chuckled pathetically as a tear slipped down his cheek.

” But then you did something unforgivable. You got hurt and this is the worst pain I’ve ever felt. So, I need you to save me one more time. I need you back at my side and tell me you love me too. So please Nari, come back to me. I cannot do this without you. I love you. “

Another tear slipped own his cheek and his eyes shut as he held her hand closer, dropping his head, he couldn’t bare exposing his soul for her and for her to remain as she did. He was so lightheaded, so tired he didn’t realise the monitor had spiked. Everything felt still until he felt a soft hand, weakly brush and capture a stray tear.

His head whipped up, teary eyes snapping to see Nari, eyes slightly bleary but very much awake.

His lungs stopped working and her name caught in his throat. Geon-woo’s fingers tightened around her hand as he leaned forward in his seat.

“Say it again” her words were barley a croak, throat scratchy and parched as it had not been used in over a month. The longest month of his life,

He simply looked at her confused, a hundred and one emotions wirling from relief, to happiness, guilt and griefย  coursed through him but all that rang in is head was that Nari, his Nari, was awake.

”What?” he was taken aback but Nari smiled, a small quirk of her lip that lit up his chest.

”Say it again” she repeated, her head weakly tilting to him as a glimmer shined in her half lidden bruised eyes. ” Say it again so I can say it back” she practically begged.

Geon-woo let out a watery chuckle, his lungs releasing a deep exhale of relief as he nodded, leaning closer as he pressed his forehead against hers while their hands still remained intertwined.

“I love you, Byun Nari” he whispered and Nari smiled widely. ” I really really love you”

“I love you too” she said back, and he couldn’t wipe the smile from his face. ” I very much do”

“Nari” he whispered breathlessly as he felt his heart hammering in his chest.

“Geon-woo” she mused as she felt him shake lightly. ” Don’t you have something to ask me?” she teased lowly and he smiled rather shyly.ย

“I-, yeah” he chuckled flusteredly before smiling the most beautiful grin she had ever seen in her life. “Byun Nari will you be my girlfriend?” he asked and Nari paused, watching his grin falter before she nodded, her smile mirroring his as glassy eyes bared their souls irreversibly to each other.

For a moment, everything felt right.ย

“I’d love too” she whispered back and he kissed their entwined hands before his gaze flickered with a deep pain.ย  She called his name softly and she realised his name, well…him in general, felt like home.ย

“Don’t ever scare me like that again” he said, and she couldn’t help but smile.

“I’m one for surprises” she teased and he shook his head with a laugh. She missed him terribly.

“That you are” he mused and then he captured her lips in his and their heartbeats synced. For a second all was well because Byun Nari would always come back to Kim Geon-woo and he would always fight for her.ย

They were whole, and they were not about to be separated. Not again.ย Not ever.
