POV AUTHOR

It had been a week since their freshers’ party, and now, after what felt like an eternity of studying, today marked the last day of their exams.

As usual, the squad was gathering outside the classroom, discussing everything but the subject they were about to be tested on.

“Guys, tumhe pata hai? Aaj exam ke liye classes change ho gayi hain, aur humare saath koi aur class bhi baithegi,” Tiya announced, approaching the group with a smug expression as if she had just cracked a secret government code.

(Guys, you all know that for today’s exam classes have changed and some else is going to sit with us)

Tara, already irritated because today’s exam was Economics—the subject she despised with her entire existence—groaned loudly. “Yaar, yeh school wale pagal ho gaye hain kya? Ek toh already exam ka stress hai, upar se inke naye naye tantrums. Ab kya classes bhi dhoondte phirna padega?”

(Man, have these school people gone crazy? There’s already the stress of exams, and on top of that, their new dramas never end. Now we have to go around searching for classes too?)

Tiya grinned. “Tension mat le, maine pehle hi pata kar liya hai. First floor pe chalna padega.”

(Don’t worry, I’ve already found out. We have to go to the first floor)

At the mere mention of “first floor,” the whole group groaned dramatically, as if they had been asked to climb Mount Everest.

Still, they made their way upstairs and entered the classroom. The moment Tara stepped in, she froze. Sitting there comfortably, as if they owned the place, were none other than her brother and his friends.

“Bhai? Aap log yahan?!” Tara asked, baffled.  (Bhai? You guys are here?!)

Her brother, unfazed, casually replied, “Haan, aaj science aur commerce wale ko ek class mili hai.”

(Yes, today science and commerce students have been assigned the same classroom)

Tara made an “Ohh” face, nodding as if she had just discovered the meaning of life.

Just then, Rahul grinned and turned towards Mahi. “Mahi, your roll number is beside me.”

Mahi, who had been peacefully existing until now, dramatically looked at the ceiling as if questioning the gods. “Yaar, Bhagwan! Aakar abhi mere roll number iske baju hi likhna tha?” she groaned, making everyone chuckle.

(Oh God! Of all places, my roll number had to be next to his?)

Meanwhile, Tara’s eyes were subtly scanning the classroom, searching for someone. But he wasn’t there.

“Guys, chalo, abhi baithte hain. Time ho raha hai,” Ishita said, and everyone moved forward to take their seats.  (Guys, come on, let’s sit down. It’s time)

Ishita sat beside Rajveer, Mahi reluctantly took her place next to Rahul, Shivi sat with Manav, and Tiya ended up with some random student. Tara, however, remained seatless at the last bench, while Sahil sat in front of her.

“Tara, tere baju koi nahi baith raha kya?” Shivi asked, turning back.  (Tara, is no one sitting next to you?)

“Don’t know” Tara shrugged nonchalantly, but inside, she was hoping for a certain someone.

Just then, the teacher entered and started distributing the papers when a familiar voice echoed from the doorway.

“May I come in, Miss?”

Tara’s head snapped up.

“Yes, Tarun, come in,” the teacher replied.

And just like that, Tarun entered the room, walking straight towards the last bench—straight towards Tara.

The girls in the room collectively glared at her. If looks could kill, Tara would have been eliminated before the exam even started.

Tarun casually sat beside her. “Hi,” he greeted, making Tara’s brain short-circuit for a second.

“Why are you sitting beside me?” she whispered, not understanding the sudden turn of events.

Tarun smirked, pointing at the desk. “Because I think it’s my roll number written here.”

“Oh.” That was all she managed to say before immediately diving into her exam paper, trying not to think about the fact that Tarun was now inches away from her.

*******

The exam ended, and everyone was busy collecting their stuff when Sahil turned around.

“Hey, Tara, are you free in the evening? Let’s go to some café,” he asked casually.

Before Tara could even process the invitation, a deep voice cut through the conversation.

“Reste loin de ma copine, salaud, sinon toute ton existence sera retirée du monde,” Tarun said in fluent French, making Sahil go pale.

(Stay away from my girl, you bastard, otherwise your entire existence will be erased from this world)

Without a second thought, Sahil nodded and scurried away as if his life depended on it.

Tara, completely bewildered, turned to Tarun. “Kya bola tumne usse? Aur pehle yeh batao, yeh kaunsi ‘chini-mini’ language thi?”

(What did you just say to him? And first, tell me—what kind of ‘Chini-Mini’ language was that?)

Tarun just shrugged, clearly unbothered.

Tara narrowed her eyes. “Aise bhi koi karta hai? Usne sirf poocha tha, ho sakta tha mujhe jaana ho uske saath! Tumhe kya problem hai?” she said, crossing her arms, pretending to be annoyed.

(Who even does that? He just asked me, and what if I actually wanted to go with him? What’s your problem?)

Tarun leaned in slightly, eyes locked onto hers. “You dare go out with another boy, and I will remove his whole existence.” His tone was calm, but his glare was sharp.

Tara raised a brow. “Kyu? Jealous ho rahe ho?” (Why are you getting jealous?)

Tarun smirked. “Tara darling, tumhare liye woh sab kuch hota hai jo kisi aur ke liye kabhi nahi hua.” With that, he got up and walked away, leaving Tara blinking in disbelief.

“Tara darling, for you, I feel everything that I have never felt for anyone else.”

*****

“He did WHAT!?” Tiya shrieked, nearly dropping her popcorn.

The girls were gathered at the park, waiting for the boys before heading to a movie, and Tara had just finished recounting the whole French declaration of war incident.

“But how could he propose like that?! He should have done something special! This was so unexpected,” Mahi complained, as if Tarun’s non-existent proposal had personally offended her.

“Exactly!” the girls chorused in agreement.

Tara huffed. “Guys, I’m telling you something serious, and you all are stuck on the proposal thing?!”

Shivi grinned. “Accha, sorry. Chal, bata, tujhe kya feel hota hai? Do you like him?”  (Okay, sorry. Now tell me, what do you feel? Do you like him?)

Tara hesitated before mumbling, “I don’t know, but whenever that chudail Samiksha goes near him, I feel like strangling her.”

Mahi gasped dramatically. “Matlab tu pyaar karti hai!”  (That means you’re in love!)

Tara’s eyes widened. “Maine kab kaha aisa?!”  (When did I say that)

Ishita smirked. “Jo tune abhi bola, usse yeh toh confirm ho gaya ki tu karti hai.”  (What you just said is enough proof that you do)

The whole group laughed while Tara rolled her eyes. “Ugh, hato, mujhe baat hi nahi karni tumse,” she said, getting up—only to bump straight into Tarun’s chest.  (Ugh, get lost, I don’t want to talk to you guys)

“Ouch,” she muttered, rubbing her forehead as the girls snickered.

Tarun instantly held her shoulders. “Are you okay?” he asked, concern in his voice.

Tara nodded, suddenly very aware of how close they were.

“Ahem,” someone cleared their throat, making them quickly step back. The girls gave Tara a knowing look, making her blush furiously.

“Guys, let’s go! We’re getting late for the movie,” Rajveer called out.

Everyone headed towards the bikes. Mahi sat with Rahul, Shivi with Rohan, Ishita with Rajveer.

“Manav, can I sit with you?” Tiya asked shyly.

“Yeah, sure,” Manav replied, and Tiya winked at Tara before hopping onto the bike.

Tara was left behind, fuming. “Gaddar log,” she muttered under her breath.  (Traitors)

Just then, Tarun smirked. “O madam, daydreaming band karo aur baitho. Sab chale gaye. Ya koi aur irada hai?”

(O madam, stop daydreaming and sit. Everyone’s gone. Or do you have some other plans?)

Tara sighed dramatically. “No, no, let’s go,” she said, sitting behind him.

“Pakad lo, gir na jao. Speed me chalane wala hoon,” he teased.  (Hold on tight, don’t fall. I’m going to ride fast)

Tara ignored him—until he actually sped up, making her instinctively grab his shoulders.

Tarun smirked. “That’s more like it.”

And with that, they zoomed off, with a new chapter of their story just beginning.
