She was staring at me and absentmindedly i uttered, “Did you fall for me?”
I said to tease her but there is something inside me which is making me restless.
I just said to irritate her but my heart is waiting for her reply.
She stammered and replied, “Good night, I’m feeling sleepy. You should go too.”
She ran to her room, and I just stood there, watching her retreating figure.
I muttered to myself, “You need to control your mouth, Vihu,” then pressed my forehead slightly and walked to my assigned room.
How could I just blabbered like this in front of her?
She is thinking of me that I am mad.
When I opened the door, the lights were off, but suddenly they turned on to reveal two clowns watching me.
“You just went to fill the water bottle, right?” Yash asked, smirking and eyeing me closely.
I ruffled my hair and put the water bottle on the side table.
“Yes,” I replied with a shrug.
“So, what took you so long?” Sid asked, peeking out from under his blanket.
These two crackheads.
“I… forgot the way,” I said as my tongue stuttered badly.
‘Wow, you’ve embarrassed me. Is this what i have taught you, to come up with such a lame excuse?’, my brain mocked me.
They both stared at me keenly, and I gulped hard, fearing that if they found out what really happened, they’d tease me endlessly.
“Tune hame bewakoof samajh rakha hai?”, Sid said.
(Do you think we’re fools?)
“Samajhna kya hai, ab Jo hai woh hai,” i replied shrugging my shoulders.
(What is there to understand? What’s true is true)
“Oh really? Then I think I saw your ghost with Ruhanika… By the way, what were you doing with her so late?” Yash asked, crossing his arms interrogating me like I am some criminal.
I cleared my throat and said, “She was anxious about tomorrow, so I was just trying to motivate her.”
“Yeah, sure, motivating her by standing so close that not even air could pass between you two. I saw you both,” Yash said, rolling his eyes.
I coughed awkwardly.
He knew.
But how?
“That doesn’t matter. What were you doing there?” I shot back at him.
“I went to look for you because you didn’t come,” Yash said, huffing as he lay back in bed.
“Liar, he went to meet Tanya,” Sid said scrunching his eyebrows.
Meanwhile Yash throwing daggers at Siddharth as bechara received the betrayal and Sid totally ignoring him pretending that if he didn’t spill the beans.
This time I smirked and asked him, “Why did you go to meet her this late?”
“Ahh, I just went to check if she has taken medicines or not, you know how she is?”, Yash replied confidently.
Huh, whom is he lying.
Nevermind I nodded, not wanting to exaggerate the conversation.
I immediately lay down, but these two clowns decided to start their show.
“By the way, Yash, how close were they standing?” Sid asked, wiggling his eyebrows.
Yash dramatically stood up, and Sid followed suit.
“He was standing so close that not a single breath of air could pass between them. They were both staring at each other,” Yash said, acting like me and staring at the pillow.
He held the pillow close.
He didn’t have anyone to act in so he was using a pillow.
This guy.
“And Vihaan didn’t even blink. They were both a bit drenched, and he was gently wiping the drops off her forehead,” Yash continued.
Sid looked at me with keen eyes, and both of them burst into laughter.
Yash pretended to be all dramatic, and I felt my ears and cheeks burning with embarrassment.
I turned and covered myself with the blanket.
They laughed even harder, and I threw a pillow at them.
“I never imagined Vihaan doing this stuff,” Sid said in between his laughed and Yash joined him.
“Just don’t irritate me, go to sleep,” i yelled at them but they are definitely not in mood to stop.
“By the way, is there something going on between you two?” Sid asked, and Yash also stood up, looking at me for answers.
What on earth are they thinking?
Me and Ruh??
No way…!!!
“Nothing is going on between us, so stop using that tiny brain of yours,” I replied as I set my bed.
“Just remember what you said because soon you might end up in trouble”, Yash said while something doing in his phone.
Did he record it?
He definitely did.
“What the hell, why did you record it?” I asked.
“Ohh, because this clip will definitely entertain us in future,” he said giving me teasing smile.
After a few more minutes of irritating me, they finally settled down and went to sleep.
But I couldn’t.
I tossed and turned all night.
Every time I closed my eyes, her smile and hazel brown eyes were all I could see, sparkling with droplets of water. I could almost hear her heartbeat quicken when I was near, as if all other sounds had vanished into the background.
I sat up, cleared my thoughts, and tried to sleep, but it was no use.
I walked around the room, but nothing helped. Sid and Yash were sleeping soundly, while I was wide awake.
An hour passed, and eventually, I managed to drift into a restless sleep.
β’β’β’β’β’β’
In my dream, I heard many voices calling my name, but I couldn’t open my eyes. Not that I wanted to, but my eyes wouldn’t open. Suddenly, I felt something cold on me.
I sat up abruptly, mumbling, “Baarish.”
(rain)
Yash and Sid stood in front of me with questioning looks, having empty bottle in their hand.
“Get up, it’s morning,” Yash said, frustratingly.
I looked at the alarm clock and realized with shock that I was an hour late.
“Why didn’t you wake me up?” I asked, rushing to get ready.
“We tried, but you turned off the alarm and went back to sleep,” Sid said, stuffing a sandwich into his mouth.
“You are smiling like a maniac in your sleep, God knows what kind of dream you were seeing?,” he continued stuffing the last bite.
Only i know how much I was enjoying the dream.
Within ten minutes, I was ready and had breakfast.
Yash and Sid had already left for the auditorium.
I grabbed my ID and headed to the auditorium.
When I arrived, everyone was already there. I quietly joined our class line so Miss Ragini wouldn’t see me.
Thankfully, she didn’t.
I stood with our school, and all the other schools were present too. The host began, “Welcome to Round 1 of the MKIQ Quiz Competition. I’m your host, and I’ll explain the rules. Good luck to everyone.”
After finishing his speech and explaining the rules, he stepped aside.
“They look pretty tough,” Sid whispered, to which Yash replied, “So, it’s not like that we have a wrestling match?”
I chuckled with Yash, and Sid rolled his eyes.
My eyes searched for Ruh.
She was standing at the back of the other line.
I noticed she was talking to a guy from another team member.
Ugh, why is that guy standing so close to her? Can’t he give her some space?
And why is Ruh talking to him? She could talk to me too, right?
My brain said, ‘Gosh, stop being so jealous, maybe he’s asking her something, and she’s just answering’
I nodded.
Yeah, they’re probably talking about work.
But wait, I am not jealous.
Huh, why would I be jealous.
‘Ab is gadhe ko kon smjhaaye’, my subconscious mind mocked me.
(Who will explain this to this fool?)
Par samajhna kya hai.
(But what is there to understand?)
Nevermind I looked at both of them, Ruh was standing there silently nodding whenever that guy said something to her.
The guy scratched his forehead and gave her a silly smile, to which she responded with a polite smile before turning away.
Hmm, she doesn’t smile like that when she is with me.
That means there’s nothing to worry about.
I turned around and saw Miss Ragini glaring at me. I gulped hard as she looked very angry.
Not now.
“Vihaan, can I ask what’s more interesting than paying attention to the front?” she asked, her voice stern.
I stuttered, “Nothing.”
She looked at me for a moment but then moved on.
Why does she always seem so intimidating?
The competition soon started.
Eight schools were competing, and after three hours, Round 1 ended. A half-hour later, the results were declared. The top six teams advanced, and our team was one of them.
Yes, we qualified for Round 2.
β’β’β’β’β’β’
It was already night time, and everyone had come downstairs for dinner.
We all went downstairs for dinner, and our school finally decided to have a nice meal.
Our principal mam is a big foodie, which makes this one of the best things about our school, as we don’t have to eat tasteless food in the canteen.
Everyone was sitting together when I noticed Ruh sitting at the corner of the bench.
I quickly went to sit next to Ruh.
Tanya went to check the menu for the dinner.
She looked at me and asked, “Hi, did you miss me?” I asked, and she rolled her eyes while focusing on her book.
“Don’t you get tired from studying so much?” I asked as I moved a bit closer to her.
“No, I like studying,” she replied without looking up from her book.
I can get tired by just looking at books, but I don’t want to score less marks that’s why I have to study.
You know it’s another level of satisfaction when you scored highest marks.
“Why are you here? We were looking for you everywhere,” Yash said as he sat beside me, so now I was sitting between Ruh and Yash.
“Hi Ruhanika,” Yash said while waving his hands.
Ruh looked at him, smiled, and replied, “Hi”
Since the bench was for four people,
So, Sid came out of nowhere and sat beside Ruh.
“Ruhanika, did you know about that scene……” Sid started talking, and Ruh began chatting with him, closing her book.
What the-
She didn’t even look at me and talking with Sid.
‘Huh Beizzati’, my brain teased me.
Sometimes I wish I could throw my brain, but it’s precious for me.
‘Oh, poor boy, ask me how I tolerate you,’ my brain mocked.
God knows what kind of ghosts they are talking about.
Them and their obsession with horror movies.
Soon, Vani and Tanya joined us, and we started eating.
Ruh’s face fell when she saw the food. She sighed, took a deep breath, and stared at it.
“What’s wrong, Ruh?” I whispered.
She absentmindedly replied, “I don’t like peas.”
I chuckled at her cute reaction, like a kid who doesn’t like vegetables.
“But you should eat them, they’re healthy,” I said.
“Don’t give me a lecture. I eat almost everything, but I just don’t like peas,” she said, making a face as she tried to eat them.
I passed my plate towards her, and she looked at me with a hopeful expression.
“If you don’t like the peas, you can give them to me. I’ll eat them,” I said.
Her eyes brightened up with a mix of relief and excitement when I nodded in agreement.
With a smile, she began carefully picking each pea from her plate and transferring them to mine.
Even though I’m not particularly fond of peas, I didn’t mind at all.
I was happy to do this just to see her smile.
She leaned in slightly and whispered, “Don’t worry, I’ll treat you with chocolates,” then went back to eating.
I shook my head and smiled.
“I can see everything,” Yash teased, nudging me.
“What? I was just helping Ruhanika,” I said, trying to explain.
“I just said I can see everything. When did I mention Ruhanika?” he asked, raising an eyebrow.
This Clown.
Right now I want to beat the hell out of him.
“I’ll complain to Ruhanika that you are thinking to beat me,” he said raising his eyebrows making a puppy face.
I gave him a tight smile.
“Khana khate time baat nhi krte,” I said while putting a piece of green chili into his mouth.
(No talking while eating) I said.
He started drinking water as he feels spicy.
Serves him right.
.
.
.
After dinner, we all set to sleep.
Two hours later, I come out of my room as I am going to the terrace.
Because it’s good to walk a little bit.
‘Or maybe because of someone,’ my mind again poked it’s nose.
I royally ignored my brain.
I was walking when I saw Meera.
At this moment, I am not in the mood to face her.
Without thinking, I turned around quickly and hid behind the water tank.
From my hiding spot, I watched to see when she would leave.
Meera, however, just stood there, talking to someone. I was getting anxious, tapping my fingers against the water tank.
Suddenly, I heard a sweet, melodic voice.
“Are you playing hide and seek?” It was Ruh, standing there with a bottle and a book in her hands, probably filling them with water.
I quickly grabbed her hand and pulled her towards me.
“What the hell are you doing?” she tried to ask, but I covered her mouth, muffling her voice.
“Shhh, don’t make any noise,” I whispered, glancing to make sure Meera was gone.
Once she left, I sighed in relief and turned to look at Ruh.
Her eyes were full of questions.
I removed my hand from her mouth, and she immediately exclaimed, “Are you mad or what?”
I looked at her, taking in her appearance. She was wearing a light peach-colored kurti with her hair tied up in a messy bun.
The loose strands moved with the breeze from the open window next to the water tank. She had applied a bit of makeup, maybe just lip gloss or a touch of moisturizer, but she looked beautiful.
My hands moved almost instinctively to touch the back of her hair, and I gently opened the clutcher, letting her hair fall freely.
With the window open, her hair cascaded down, creating a serene and divine look.
I was so mesmerized that I didn’t realize I was staring until I felt a tap on my head.
“Ouch,” I said, rubbing my head.
She hit me with her book.
She glared at me and gave me another light tap on the head.
“Where were you so lost? I’ve been calling your name for ten minutes,_ she said, waving her hands in front of me with a hint of frustration.
“I was lost in you,” I muttered softly, almost to myself.
“What did you say?” she asked, looking confused.
“Did you hear anything?” I replied playfully.
“Ah….forget it, you idiot. Just give me my clutcher. You let all my hair open,” she said, reaching for the clutcher, which I held behind me.
As she reached for it, she ended up on top of me, pushing me back against the wall.
Her hands naturally gripped my shoulders, and I could feel an electric jolt through my body from her touch.
To keep her from falling, I wrapped my arms around her waist.
I could almost hear my heartbeat pounding in my ears. Her breathing was warm and heavy.
She looked at me with intense eyes, and I felt completely lost in her gaze, as if I was peering into the depths of her soul.
She tried to stand up, but I kept holding her waist.
“You know you look more beautiful with your hairs open,” I said straight looking into her eyes.
I came out of her thoughts until the bottle fell only to realise the scene was quite something-
School corridor.
Behind the water tank.
Moonlight is coming in through the window and shining on us.
“Ruh, don’t you think the position is quite romantic. If someone sees us like this, they might think…” I began, holding back my laughter and watching her reaction.
She immediately understood what I was hinting at and quickly stood up.
“Chii, chii, chii… you have such a nasty mind,” she said, standing up and grabbing her bottle.
“Ain’t you have a nasty mind too, understanding what I meant so quickly,” I teased, standing up and putting my hands in my pockets, enjoying the moment.
“Well, think positive. Maybe someone might think I’m trying to choke you to death,” she said with a sweet yet dangerous smile and took her belongings, moving towards the terrace.
I just chuckled and followed her like a lost puppy.
