“So… what you’re telling me is that he dumped you as soon as you told him about the cancer?” Mads asked Ella again. She nodded.
“What a douche!” Mads exclaimed.
He was more than douche. What kind of guy does that. God help me if I ever met him I’d give him his money’s worth.
“Ehh.” Ella shrugged her small shoulders. “I don’t care anymore, just shows it wasn’t meant to be. To be honest he annoyed me most of the time. Always dragging me to football games, then ignoring me when I was over to play video games.”
I don’t understand. I really don’t. If Ella was my girlfriend and at my house I would-
Nope.
Not gonna think about that right now.
It’s been almost a week since Ella arrived. Mads spent most of it quizzing Ella.
“What about you guys?” Ella asked drawing me back to the conversation.
“Me? I’ve had my fair share.” Mads smiled. “What bout you Jake?” She smirked.
I sighed. Mads knew my history.
“I had my fair share too…” I said, trying to avoid details, but Mads wouldn’t have it.
“Yeah right. You’ve had definitely more than your fair share Jake.” She laughed slapping my shoulder.
Let’s just say that was an understatement.
“Jake had a bit of a… stage… let’s just say.” I glared at Mads trying to make her shut up. I looked at Ella who didn’t seem surprised by this information, and for some reason that hurt. I was just about to pick up my book when Ella spoke up.
“So how long have you guys been together?” She asked curiously, pointing between me and Mads.
Now that surprised me.
“I-I-…” I gasped. Mads cackling beside me.
“Oh Sweetie!” Mads laughed again. “I…” Laugh. “I don’t swing that way.” She gasped out.
Ella sat there in shock, before I caught a look of relief, making me happy.
She thought we were together.
Me and Mads.
Like that would ever happen.
“Oh my gosh!” Ella laughed, slapping her hand over her mouth. “I’m sorry. It’s just you two bicker like an old couple, I just thought…” She wondered off laughing.
Then all of us were. Laughing our heads off.
“This place was far too boring without you Ella, you know that?” Mads gasped still out of breath.
And I couldn’t help but agree.
___
“200 dollars please!” Ella smiled, lifting her hand towards me. I looked down at the monopoly board.
She’d done it again.
How does she win every single game?
I started to collect her money from the banker’s tray.
I mean seriously the girl literally owned three quarters of the board.
Mads was out.
And I only had 15 dollars to my name.
I turned around to give Ella the money. And stopped.
“E-Ella your nose.” I said, my heart started to race with fear.
She lifted her hand to the tube and the blood running out from under it.
“Oh…” She said softly, standing up. Looking down at the blood on her fingers, she headed to the bathroom. “Y-you guy’s can go. I’m sorry about this.” She closed the door behind her.
Mads pulled softly on my shoulder, I was right at the door now, my nose nearly touching it, heart still pounding.
“Come on Jake let’s give her some time alone.” She pulled again but I stayed put. Mads sighed before walking out giving me an empathetic look as she reached the door, and continued walking.
I heard a clatter from inside the bathroom.
“God damn it.” I heard Ella sob.
That’s it.
I tapped on the door softly. “Ella? Ella it’s just me. Please let me in.” My heart started to slow, pain throbbing through it.
The door clicked, and I stepped back as her pale hand pushed it opened it slightly before she stumbled back towards the sink wiping at her nose.
I walked in slowly, her hands wiped roughly at her face.
“Ella.” She kept rubbing. “Ella stop. It’s okay.”
She dropped the rag looking at me.
My heart stopped at the pain in her eyes.
“No. It’s not alright Jake. Look at me!” She yelled, tears running down her face. “Look at me…” She whispered through her sob.
I walked forward grabbing her to my chest as she sobbed into my clothes. “Shhh… it’s going to be okay.”
I lifted her, sitting down on the tiles, back against the wall. Ella small frame straddled my waist her arms wrapped around my neck, her tears dropping warmly against my neck as I held her close to me.
We sat like that in silence for a while.
Her cries the only sound breaking the quiet.
As her tears slowly came to a stop I brushed her dampened hair back from her forehead, resting mine against hers. “How long has this been happening Ella?”
“A while, usually at night but it’s been getting worse and more often.” She whispered, blue eyes staring into mine.
“Have you talked to the doctor El?”
“Yes, he- he can’t do anything to stop it, it’s from having the tube in for so long.
“Okay then… How about we get you cleaned up then go have dinner, yeah?”
“Okay… Thank you Jake… for all of this, y-you don’t have to do this.”
I looked at the girl in front of me. I would do anything for her really. It’s only been a week, but something just pulls me to her. Maybe it’s because we’re both just trying to fight to stay alive in this cruel world.
“You don’t have to thank me El. Now…” I wiped at her small nose with a soft cloth.
Smiling down at the girl in front of me.
The girl made of wonder and hope.
And her sparking eye’s as she stared back at me.
My hope.
