The city never let her forget him. Every corner, every block, every graffiti-stained wall whispered his name. Jax.

𝐌𝐚𝐲𝐚 walked the streets with Leo in his stroller, bundled up against the chill. He was small, but stubborn. He kicked his legs, laughed at nothing, and made her heart split with love and fear. She kept her eyes forward, but every time she passed the blocks he once ruled, every time she heard whispers, she felt it — the pull of unfinished business.

“Mommy, look!” Leo chirped, pointing at a stray dog sniffing the curb. Maya forced a smile, but her mind was elsewhere.

She couldn’t stop thinking about him. About the man who’d left her pregnant and alone. About the father of her son.

It started small.

A rumor from the corner deli cashier: “He was around here last month. Heard he moved somethin’ heavy through the East Side.”

A casual comment from a fellow mother at the park: “Jax? That boy? Yeah, people still talk about him. Scary place he runs.”

A shadow of recognition from a neighbor: “Hey… you look familiar. Ain’t you…?”

Each whisper, each glimpse of his name, tightened something in her chest. Leo deserved answers. Maya deserved closure.

But approaching him? That was a different beast. Dangerous. Terrifying. She’d seen what he was capable of.

That night, she sat in her tiny apartment, Leo asleep beside her. Her sketchbook lay open, pencil poised but heavy in her hand. She drew his face again, softer now — a father she had only imagined.

She whispered to the empty room: “Leo deserves to know you… even if I don’t trust you.”

A sharp knock at the door startled her.

“𝐖𝐡𝐨—” she began, but nobody was there. Just a small envelope, pushed under the door.

Her hands shook as she picked it up. Inside: a photograph of Jax, older, harder, staring into the camera. Written on the back in jagged handwriting:

You’re looking for me. I’m looking for you.

Maya froze. Her heart pounded. Anger, fear, and something she hadn’t expected — a flicker of hope — coursed through her.

The weeks that followed were a careful, dangerous dance.

She asked around quietly, never revealing too much. She walked streets she knew she shouldn’t, eyes peeled for anything that could lead her to him. Every mention of his name made her stomach twist. Every sighting made her pulse spike.

And all the while, Leo grew, oblivious to the storm around him, laughing and kicking and filling her heart with impossible love.

Maya’s resolve hardened. She couldn’t wait forever. Leo deserved a father. She needed answers.

But the truth? Finding Jax meant stepping into his world — a world of danger, violence, and secrets.

And Maya was running out of time.

𝐌𝐚𝐲𝐚 tucks Leo in, her own body trembling with a mix of fear and determination. Outside, the city hums, alive and dangerous. Inside, she whispers a promise:

“𝐈𝐦 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐲𝐨𝐮 , 𝐣𝐚𝐱. 𝐅𝐨𝐫 𝐥𝐞𝐨. 𝐀𝐧𝐝 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐦𝐞.”
