“Miko… Is a pie supposed to be black when you take it out?”

Ei stared with a rather proud expression at her ‘apple pie’ freshly taken out of the oven. The inside seemed uncooked and gooey whilst the crust was absolutely black, crumpling as she moved the tray onto the counter. Miko looked over from her laptop and blinked in unfazement. It was a miracle their house was still intact by now. “Oh dear, I’m not quite sure about that.. But I’m sure ms. L/n won’t mind too much wether it’s edible or not.”

The violet haired woman thoughtfully took off her oven gloves and nodded in conclusion. Yae watched amusedly as her partner placed the smoking good into the tupperwear that was now empty of cookies and clicked the sides shut. She definately didn’t reccommed eating that thing, but she decided against on saying much against it after seeing Ei’s proud gaze.

With the container in hand, she stepped outside her door to slip on her slippers. Ei first noticed a small group of children crouched on the concrete streets with chalks in their chubby hands. They were chatting cheerfully, making boxes filled with numbers connected on top of another. She remembered her own son when he was a kid himself.

Nevermind that, she would rather not recall those times.

“Ms. Ei! Good afternoon, how are you?” Y/n waved softly. The Raiden akwardly tried her best to give a small smile, which ended up looking like a boss smirking down at the worker at her feet. The kids shrunk behind one another after seeing her expression. “Afternoon. I’m alright, how has your day been.”
Due to her tension, Ei’s greeting sounded more like a demand. Her friend-coworker was a little more used to this now that she knew who she really was like, otherwise the said teacher too would’ve froze up like the children nearby. “That’s great, I was just hanging out with some new friends. Say hello to ms. Raiden!”

Only a few quiet squeaks came from the shorter ones which Ei found quite adorable. Her feelings were not really expressed throught her face that had an intimidating deadpan face. Y/n sweatdropped, but averted her attention to the familiar acrylic object in her hands. “Oh, is that my tupperwear? I smell something good inside.”

“I.. Made some pie. Thank you for the treats yesterday, please enjoy.”

“Oh wait a moment-“

Ei planned on inviting her over for some tea after striking up a small conversation, but quickly got intimidated by the multiple tiny pairs of eyes staring cautiously at her. Handing the container, she speedwalked back to the safety of her home and shut the door. Her neighbor smiled at her unexpetently shy behaviour and excused herselfself to return back home monetarily and drop off the object. The principal was so confident and looked powerful in school, but she seemed like a socially awkward teen outside her field. The moment Y/n’s eyes hit the containts of the box, she nearly passed out.

It…. Was indeed a pie. A (somewhat) circle shaped bread with extremely burnt crust that was crumpling away, Somehow the apples and breadcrumbs inside looked frozen. Pie is a difficult baked good to make if she was being honest, but this was a whole another level.

Once you got over the shock, she burst out chuckling. One thing for sure is always take her containers back after handing the goods over.

After the “scary” lady went back inside, the kids resumed thier game. A few was hopping over the drawn numbers, two were playing a clapping game on her porch stairs while the last one was reading on the grass. The young teacher saw them across the street where the path was more narrow and many cars passed by, so she invited them over to the front of her own house. Most of them attended Teyvat elementary and recognized her which immediately burst the parent’s suspicions.

They’d been playing since morning, so each eventually grew tired and went back to their house. Two and three went in pairs since they lived close, while Y/n walked the last one off to her home. Qiqi, a kid who she had occasionally played dolls with back when she worked at the elementary since she wasn’t the best at socializing with other kids. Her father lived across the street, so walking her back didn’t take long.

Upon returning back home, Y/n began to clean up the chalks the kids were playing with. She didn’t have much planned for the afternoon, but didn’t feel like rotting in her room for the fifth time this month. Maybe go window shopping at luxury stores in fancy for no reason clothes while pretending to be a billionaire (her favorite hobby)..?

“N/n. Why don’t you come in for tea?”

Yae called out as she leaned on her front porch. The woman by the pavement looked up and smiled. “Oh, if it’s not a bother. Just let me clean these up first!” After placing the bucket of street chalk back in the house and rinsing her hands, Y/n quickly made her way into the Raiden household. She was caught off guard by the sight of Ei, who was on the couch dying while covering her face with her hands. Miko snickered softly. “Awe~ Poor Ei got intimidated by the neighborhood kids.”

The h/c haired female laughed awkwardly and looked around. Everything seemed organized now, only a medium sized box that looked half empty on the counter was now present. Yae soon received a phone call and excused herself for a minute. Y/n sat on the couch and admired the simple interior, wondering how someone could have such an empty home a void of millions of decorations and half useless things on the shelves.

“It looks like I’ll have to take some more phone calls for today. Shame, but we can go to a cafe next time.” The pinkette sighed out as she walked out of the room. “Why don’t you three go out to the new place that I heard opened nearby? I think it was called Amakumo.” She suggested. “Three?” “Scaramouche! Get down here real quick.”

In the end, Miko somehow miraculously forced all three out of the house and locked the door behind them. The five minutes drive never felt more awkward.

It was a clear Saturday, many people infiltrated the cafe. Y/n and Ei gently moved through the gaps between people, while her son pushed and shoved past everyone in sight. She almost pretended to not know who he was. Apologies flooded out from the younger teacher’s lips by habit as they followed the blue haired male through tables. Eventually, the three sat down at an empty seat. The previous two sat beside one another facing Scaramouche.

“Hello, welcome to Amakumo cafe. What would you like to have today?” A girl with ravenette hair reaching her shoulders came over to the three. Her amber eyes widened the moment she saw who were occupying the said seats. “P-principal?”

“Sara, hello. I would have.. Three dango sticks.”

Judging by the interaction, she was probably a student in Teyvat. Sara quickly wrote down the orders whilst nearly fainting and having a heart attack at the same time, but put herself together. She turned to Y/n with a pen and notepad in hand. “I’ll have the dango milk and sakura mochi. Scaramouche, do you want anything?”

She turned to the said male who had already whipped his phone out and was scrolling. He rolled his eyes and spoke with concentration still set on the device. He ended up ordering plain udon that was on lunch snack menu. After the waitress who seemed to know Ei from school hurriedly left, their table fell into silence. Ei stared at her lap intensely. Scaramouche even pulled out his earpods… By now that’s some real determination to not socialize.

“So.. Is this your first time here?”
Nodding slightly, Ei switched her attention to the kitchen area. “This place is fairly new, I haven’t had a chance to come until now.” She retorted back calmly. Kunikuzushi definitely heard the question by his reaction, but refused to answer. Y/n sighed and gave up on trying to get him involved in conversations for today. He was in a much worse mood than when she teased him at school. That reminded her to buy more pink trash bags for his and her class, grocery was tomorrow.

“Here are your orders, sorry for the wait.” A different waitress came by and dropped all the orders. Ei excitedly picked up a dango stick and started eating from the pink dango, her eyes immediately brightening. Her companion watched her and stared at the sakura mochi, deciding whether the leaf was edible or not.

Kunikuzushi slurped a few noodle strands and continued boring his eyes at his screen. At least pretended to. He side eyed the two females in front of him occasionally without them noticing, a habit of his.
What was this emotion he was feeling while watching them smile and chat so casually? His mother was unusually warm and more smiles, while she was just her

He didn’t care. He doesn’t care. He doesn’t want to care.

Kunikuzushi felt a pit form in his stomach as he watched Ei feed his colleague a dango from her stick. What was the last time someone ever hand fed him again..? Right, never. His own mother never even bothered to pack his lunch when he was younger. Yae occasionally cooked something, but he learned to microwave basic things at around six years old, and was able to cook on stoves after starting grade three.

He watched other kid’s lunches full of homemade bentos and fruit slices their parents made for them fresh that morning. In order to avoid other children’s suspicions, he started cooking things to look a bit more ‘motherly.’ Some kids had notes from their mothers that had encouraging words or a simple “have a nice lunch” on them. Any school plays or events that involved parents were the worst. Yae was busy working, while Ei was distracted taking care of his younger sister Makoto. Well.. If taking care of meant staring at her daughter with a void of expression all day along. The said girl was now finishing her courses overseas.

He always got the best scores in class. Whenever there was a sports festival, he got first place in everything. After tests, his mark would never have any less number than three digits. Kunikuzushi seemed to be a dream child to other parents. However, this was all meaningless to him. Nothing caught Ei’s attention.

When he came back home with the test paper proudly in his hands, she would only give an awkward “nice”. Was this not enough? So he observed other children and their parents. Mothers hugged and gasped whenever their children brought them papers with uneven stick figures and hearts drawn on with crayons. So Kunikuzushi tried that. He even got an award from school for it! But his mother merely thanked him before it was hung up on the wall never to be stared at again.

He was in middle school when he finally realized that he wasn’t needed. How betrayed and empty he felt back then. Ever since then, everything went south in the covered walls of the Raiden family.

But that woman… She one day just walks in his life, and takes what he worked for almost half of his life? With no effort on that. This was the teacher who pulled on her hair and almost cried whene his students brought their math to her for help because she didn’t know either. Someone who wasted a quarter of class babbling on about unrelated to what she was supposed to be teaching. But somehow, everybody gravitated towards ms. L/n. His mother was no exception.

What did she have that he didn’t?

Scaramouche squinted his eyes slightly and glared at her direction with the phone covering his face. Y/n shivered and looked around before resuming her conversation with Ei. The bright smile placed on her face seemed to attempt to reflect to his mother.

He despised her.

A/n There may be some sensitive subject for those who have uncomfy relationship with parents, but I’ll put a tw at the beginning if there are any major parts.
